College Credit Options

As students enter their junior and senior year of high school,
they have room in their schedules to take advantage of options
available to them at a college setting.

There are three options for students to participate in college
courses while still enrolled in high school The GaDOE has
details here:

Georgia Department of Education Dual Enrollment

1. Enroll in Career Technical Agricultural Education (CTAE)
courses at the Golden Isles Career Academy (GICA) for 2 blocks
per day (may include Altamaha Technical College courses),several
of which have specific articulation agreements with technical
programs for post-secondary credit (i.e.Engineering,Cad,Criminal
Justice, HVAC, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, and more). Students
interested in taking classes at Altamaha Tech need to meet
entranc requirements which include completing an application to
Altamaha Tech and meeting eligibility requirements on the ASSET
or Compass Test.

2. Apply for the ACCEL or MOWR program through:
www.GAcollege411.org. These programs enable students to take
specific academic courses at the college, which will begin their
college transcript, as well as count towards their high school
graduation requirements. Students can enroll part-time or full-
time at the college. Please note that the ACCEL program requires
minimum SAT scores of 500 on Critical Reading and Math for
students to receive both college and high school credit (The
MOWR program requirement = 600). Students must also be juniors
and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to qualify.

3. Joint Enrollment – students can apply to the college and
begin taking courses that meet after regular high school hours.
These courses will only count for college credit.

The ACCEL Application Process

If you would like to take classes at College of Coastal Georgia
during your senior year or even during 2nd semester of your
junior year, and get college and high school credit for the same
courses, then you will need to follow the steps below.

The minimum requirements for ACCEL are 3.0 GPA (academics and
foreign languages only), being on track with graduation credits,
and scoring at least 500 on SAT Critical Reading and Math
sections (or 21 on the ACT English and Math sections).

What courses can you take?
Please see the ACCEL Matrix available on www.gacollege411.org
(above ).These courses will take the place of the HS courses you
would normally enroll in at Glynn Academy. Each 3 credit
college course will be awarded full credit here at the HS level
(1 carnegie unit) and will have a higher GPA weight (on a 5-
point scale, like our AP courses). Please note that this GPA
weight is only applied at the HS level, not for your HOPE GPA.

Here are the steps for the ACCEL process:

Step 1:
Discuss your plan to apply for ACCEL with me to ensure you meet
the requirements(i.e. HOPE GPA, testing requirements, etc.). If
you have yet to receive your SAT or ACT scores, you can still
apply, but be advised that your application will be on hold
until your scores are received by the college.

Step 2:
Apply online for the ACCEL program through www.GAcollege411.org
Please notify me when you have completed the application online,
list the courses you plan to take at the college, and which term
(Fall or Spring). I will need to approve your online
application, so you can register at the college.

Step 3:
Contact Ms. Stacy Howe at CCGA: 912-279-5814/ showe@ccga.edu or
Ms. Georgia Wessinger: 279-5769/ gwessinger@ccga.edu to set up
an appointment to register for your classes and learn the
complete policies and procedures for the ACCEL program.
Please note that you also need to apply to the College of
Coastal Georgia (pay the $25 application fee) and there are some
fees that will not be coverded by the ACCEL funds, which will be
your responsibility. Ms. Howe will explain further.

Step 4:
Provide a copy of your college course schedule to me so that I
can complete your ACCEL application and ensure your High School
class schedule is appropriately adjusted.

If you have further questions please contact me or Ms. Howe at
CCGA. The Accel Application and the Fall Course Catalog at CCGA
is also available online for your information here:
