Advisement/Registration for 10th Grade 2013
During the next several weeks, we will be getting ready for advisement/registration for 10th grade. Starting on January 29th, we will have a student/parent meeting to go over the registration/advisement process. We will have 3 homerooms on Jan. 31, Feb. 4 and Feb 5. On Jan 31st your student should bring home a registration folder. Included in it will be a parent letter explaining the process, a registration form, 10th grade course descriptions, Golden Isles Career Academy (GICA) electives, graduation requirements, course recommendations made by their current teachers, and a current transcript (by looking at this you should be able to tell if your student has failed a course that is a requirement.) The power point from the January 29th meeting will be shown during the Jan 31st homeroom also. After the Jan. 31st homeroom students may bring home the registration sheet to go over with you and sign up for their 4 academic and 4 elective classes. Remember, if you choose an elective at Golden Isles Career Academy - it will be a 2 block option: either 1st and 2nd or 3rd and 4th. We do provide bus transportation to and from the Career Academy. Usually the trickiest part of the advisement/registration process is choosing electives. Academic courses are recommended by current teachers, but when it comes to choosing the electives, some students get stumped. One thing to remember, if you have not started your foreign language and you plan on attending a 4 year college, you need to start your foreign language in 10th grade. We ask that you pick 4 elective choices on your registration form and also choose a pathway. (kind of like a focus area.). Students need to complete 3 or 4 courses(depending on pathway) before they graduate. Pathways are clearly marked on the new registration form. Complete course descriptions including new AP regulations can be found on the registrar's website: go to GA homepage, click on academics, click on registrar, and scroll down to 2013-2014 course catalog. I will also upload all the necessary forms to look at for registration under the icon "Forms used for 10th grade registration" when they become available. Please look at this icon soon so you can be informed and prepared!
Thanks so much.
An excellent 6 minute video to watch on the Golden Isles Career Academy can be found at:
Click on the above link (their homepage) and then scroll to the bottom. In the bottom right hand side there is a square that says "See the GICA video" - this is an excellent way to see what GICA is all about.
