5/29/12... The day has come where I must pass you along to your new, 10th grade counselor - Mr. Loren Dittmar, email:ldittmar@glynn.k12.ga.usand extension 3181...Scheduling questions and any other type of questions should be addressed to him from now on. I have a new "batch" of students to take care of. If you have a moment, please take a brief survey on counseling services found on my website under the "survey on counseling services" icon - it can be anonymous if you would like. It has been a pleasure working with you and I know I will see you around! Take care and have a safe and restful summer.
5/16/12...Information on summer school for 2012 is on my website under one of the last icons....it will be for Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores and then Freshman - in that order.
4/24/2012 - Progress Reports Come Home Today! Do the the usual - ask and look for it! Only 4 1/2 weeks left - we can do this:)
3/27/12 - 2 registration meetings left if you have questions: one tomorrow night from 4-7 in the media center and then Thursday night at the Golden Isles Career Academy (GICA) from 4-7 both are drop in/no appointments necessary - just a chance to answer questions face to face. If you do not attend a meeting, your student needs to hand in their white registration form to me no later than this Thursday (3/29) : on my desk!!
The powerpoint that I showed to students about registration is on my webpage- the icon called, "2012 rising 10th grade registration ppt."
3/20/12 - Just to be clear - you do not have to come to a meeting- only if you have questions/concerns- you do not have to make an appointment in order to come to a meeting - just show up some time during the 4-7 timeframe. REGISTRATION FORMS must be turned in to me by MARCH 29th!
3/20/12- Registration folders are coming home this week. In them you will find a letter explaining the process, your students registration form and academic and elective class descriptions. The MOST IMPORTANT FORM- the 3 ply registration form.. The academics will be filled in at the top based on teacher recommendations. You and your student need to decide on 6 electives and check them in order of preference 1-6. If you do not have any concerns, sign the form and send back in with your student to turn in to me. If you have a question, please make arrangements to come to one of the parent meetings listed in my previous newsflash. The times are broad - just drop in when you can. This afternoon, I will try to upload my powerpoint that I am showing students and this should answer some of your questions also!
3/15/12: several things:
1) Progress Reports come home today! Check bags, pockets, books! - we only have 9 weeks left - check infinite campus weekly to monitor your student's progress.
2) My class room advisement starts on Monday through Thursday next week - I will be talking about the registration process. Please plan on coming to one of my 3 parent meeting to finish filling out your student's registration form....you can come any time during the 3 days....:
March 22 - 4-7 in our media center
March 28 - 4-7 in our media center
March 29-4-7 at GICA
Advisement/Registration for 10th Grade 2012
During the next several weeks, we will be getting ready for advisement/registration for 10th grade. Starting on Monday, March 19th, I will do a series of 19 classroom guidance visits (through English classes) where I go over registration/advisement. At this time, your student should bring home a registration folder. Included in it will be a parent letter explaining the process, a registration form, 10th grade course descriptions, Golden Isles Career Academy (GICA) electives, graduation requirements, and course recommendations made by their current teachers. The power point I show them in class will be uploaded to this website. On March 22 and 28 from 4-7pm I will hold parent/student meetings in our media center to finish filling out your student's recommendations. It is imperative that you come to these meetings. We are not setting specific appointment times in hopes to give you more flexibility. You may come at ANY time during those hours. On March 29th from 4-7, the parent/student meetings will be held at the Golden Isles Career Academy. If your student is interested at anything at all at GICA, please come to this set of advisement meetings, that way you can see the tremendous facility!! Remember, if you choose an elective at Golden Isles Career Academy - it will be a 2 block option: either 1st and 2nd or 3rd and 4th. We do provide bus transportation to and from the Career Academy.Usually the trickiest part of the advisement/registration process is choosing electives.Academic courses are recommended by current teachers, but when it comes to choosing the electives, some students get stumped. One thing to remember, if you have not started your foreign language and you plan on attending a 4 year college, you need to start your foreign language in 10th grade. We ask that you pick 6 elective choices on your registration form and rank them in order of preference from 1 to 6. I have put elective information on my website, under the "Sophomore Elective Choices" icon. I would like for you to start thinking about these elective choices now. I will upload all the necessary forms to look at for registration under the icon "Forms used for 10th grade registration". Please look at this icon soon so you can be informed and prepared! Please make time to come to one of the meetings on March 22, 28, and 29th - at any time between 4 and 7- otherwise, the computer will pick your student's electives!
Thanks so much.
2/14/2012 - Happy Valentines Day! An important message about AP Exams in the spring sent to teachers from assistant principal, Diann Meeks.
We are asking that ALL AP teachers please circulate a
sign-up sheet for every AP class in order to determine who is interested
in taking the exam. Please remind all students that there is
a cost of$87 per exam. You may ask that all students who have
concerns about the cost of the exam sign up and then come by to see me. I
will actually be calling in those students who are eligible for assistance with
ONE exam. Students who meet the criteria will have one exam paid for by
AP College Board and the state of GA. This sign- up sheet will be in your
box tomorrow andwe need it back by Friday the 17th.
The deadline is rather rigid this year and we must adhere to
the criteria.
The deadline for the payment is March 1st
. We must order exams by the deadline and need a few days to
prepare.
·
Please have students bring checks made out to
Glynn Academy.
·
Please advise students toonlycomebefore
school and during both lunches. (We have to lock payments in the
vault in the afternoon.)
·
Please discuss the seriousness of being
committed when signing up for the exams. Refunding is not an easy or
recommended process. There are refunds for serious reasons to cancel like
illnesses. There is a cancellation fee of $13 per exam but we really do
not want to have students to sign up if they are not serious about the exam.

2/9/12 - It pays to do the right thing! Today during both lunches, we rewarded all the students at GA who had not had any write ups this semester! It was wonderful! We handed out over 1,000 packs (each pack had 3 ) of homemade cookies! How cool is that! Students seemed appreciative and it was fun to see them all!
2/7/12 - Time to ask and check for Progress Reports! Your student should be bringing one home today.
2/1/12 - please take a look at my "Freshman Calendar" icon/page. Important Dates have been added in February, March, and May.
1/18/2012 - Never too early to start looking toward next year! That is right, registration is around the corner - in the spring. To start you thinking about what your student will take next year, there are several areas on my website that will be useful: Under "fall class guidance" - there is a checksheet (to keep track of credits) and a 4 year plan - that shows the typical sequence of academic courses. Electives seem to be the hardest choice for students...ask your student to think about what they are interested in. Also have them show you their GACollege 411 page that I helped them with in the fall. They did an interest inventory and started a four year plan on line. To get a look at the electives we offered this past year, look at "sophomore elective choices" on my website. Like I said, it is important to keep thinking and moving forward.
** also, I have put a "math help" icon on my website...this will show you/guide you to the Math 1 book on line.!!
Hope all this information helps!
1/10/2012 - Report cards are being distributed in 2nd block today. Please look for them:)
1/4/2012- Happy New Year! Just a reminder that students report to their homerooms tomorrow where they will get a hard copy of their schedule. A message from our registrar about schedule changes:
If a student requests a schedule change, please have them
fill out a schedule change form which may be found under the student section on
the website. Please do not send them to Guidance unless they have an
empty space on their schedule, have double lunches, or are double scheduled for
a course. Thank you for your help.
12/20/2011 - oops - Students return on Thursday, January 5th!! ( i was looking at the day i have to return:()
12/20/2011. - A few reminders before the holidays:
1) Students will go to homeroom on their first day back (Thursday, January 3, 2012) to receive schedules. Please check Infinite Campus if you cannot remember your homeroom.
2) To make a schedule change - students must fill out a "Schedule Change Request" Form, found on the GA website under student/parent tab and then under "forms" or I have some printed in my office and on my desk.
3) Schedule changes will be made for these reasons: You are in the wrong ACADEMIC class. We will not make elective, lunch or teacher changes.
Have a very safe and happpy holiday!!!
12/14/11- Attendance Certificate Information:

12/13/11-I must apologize...I have been out of touch as of late. The reason being, as one of two counselors in charge of EOCT testing for the entire school, I have had to wrap my head around testing since the week before Thanksgiving, over the break, and up until the 20th of December - I must confess, "testing" is not my favorite part of the job- it takes me away from my office, the parents, the teachers, and most importantly, the students. So if I have not responded to an email or phone call with the prompt attention that I like to - I apologize. Where I keep tests secure, I do not have access to a computer ( limited - I have to ask someone if I can use theirs) and there is no phone. But the end is in sight...5 more days. Please email questions and concerns- email is still the best way to reach me - especially during this busy time. I hope everyone is enjoying the Holiday Season. Thanks for understanding.
11/16/11- a letter from
By DR. JOHN BARGE
State School Superintendent
November is Parent Engagement Month in Georgia and
schools all across the state are working to bring awareness to the role parents
play in their children’s education. It is a time for all parents to
consider how they can get more involved in the education of their children
regardless of the grade level. Today, though, is a special day within the
month that I believe most educators are eager to recognize. It’s National
Parent Involvement Day.
When it comes to parent engagement, the research is
clear, when schools, families, and communities support each other, students of
all backgrounds and ability levels achieve at higher levels.
As the father of a teenage daughter in high school, I
know how challenging it can be to stay engaged in the lives of your children.
Life is demanding and there is almost never enough time to get everything
done, but being involved in your child’s education is arguably the most
important role a parent plays.
On National Parent Involvement Day, it is important that
parents play their part in this partnership by reflecting on whether they are
doing all they can to support their child. Anyone can be an involved
parent by just showing up, but I challenge each parent to become more engaged
in the process by asking the right questions, getting the facts, and getting
more connected with their child’s education. To assist parent’s in the process,
the Georgia Department of Education provides resources for parents and schools
to encourage and maintain parent engagement.
One of the resources developed this year is a new parent
engagement month calendar that provides specific ways parents can Get the
facts…get connected…GET INVOLVED! While it was designed to be
used in the month of November, parents will also find useful ways to engage in
meaningful conversations and positive interactions with their child throughout
the year.
To access an electronic copy of the calendar or to learn
of other parent engagement resources provided by the Georgia Department of
Education, please contact our Parent Engagement office at 404-656-2633 or visit
our website at http://public.doe.k12.ga.us/tss_title.aspx?PageReq=ParentEngagement.
On behalf of our schools and school systems, I want to
thank all of the parents and families who have taken on the full-time job of being
engaged in their child’s education. Throughout this month, I hope you
have taken time to become more engaged in your child’s education, but please do
not stop there. When November is over, continue with those engaging activities.
With actively engaged parents and families, my vision of Making
Education Work for All Georgians will become a reality!
Dr. John Barge, a parent and former school administrator, is Georgia’s State
School Superintendent.
11/15/11-Progress reports come home today! Check backpacks, pockets, notebooks....that means there are about 4 1/2 weeks left in the semester - for block/semester classes. English and Math and AP's and skinnies are year long..
11/2/11 - For those of you who could not make it last night - I have added 4 very helpful documents to my website under the icon "Fall Class Guidance 2011" - I will also be handing these documents to your freshman over the next 2 weeks as i do classroom guidance. These documents are excellent planners for the next 3 years of highschool. Please read! Thanks.
10/31/11- Hope to see you tomorrow night at 6:00pm in the auditorium for parent presentation for Freshman and Sophomores. Lots of good information will be covered.
Students are welcome to come too!
10/19/11 - Lots of information today:
1) Progress reports come out tomorrow. Please remember that your student needs to pass all 4 academic (English, Math, Science and Social studies) to be promoted. Having said that, let me remind you that this progress report is only the half way point if your student is in a science or social studies class. The halfway point for English and Math will not be until December because these two classes are lasting all year.
2) We will have a peprally/assembly tomorrow during 4th block. Students will follow a bit of a revised schedule - with third and fourth block slightly shortened.
10/17/11- Mark your calendar:Tuesday, November 1 at 6:00pm in the GA auditorium-From November 1st through November 18th, I will be training freshman on the state run website for career and college preparation called GAcollege411. Your student may have already utilized this site in 8th grade, but we will be adding to their portfolio. A representative from GAcollege411 will be here to explain some details to the students during classroom guidance and to speak to parents on Tuesday, November 1 at 6:00pm to explain how valuable a tool this website is for highschool and college/work planning.
10/11/11:Out of Office on Wednesday morning. I will be administering the PSAT to the juniors and will not be in my office most of the morning. I will get to your emails as soon as i can in the afternoon, please be patient. Thanks.

If interested in this great opportunity, come get an application in my office.
10/4/11- Just a reminder to everyone - report cards will come home on October 20th, which means the grading window will close around October 13th - in just 9 days! So most classes that your student is in, he/she needs to be promoted and to graduate! Your student earns a "credit" when they earn a passing grade of a 70 or above in a class. 26 credits in certain areas are required to graduate.....

Also - if your student would like to help with the Freshman Homecoming Float, we will be working Monday, Tuesday and WEdnesday afternoons - in my office (or outside - depending...) We can use some crafty parents too:) We will be there until 4:30 or so - thanks for helping!
9/21/11- Volunteers needed! This is the way you can "spy" on your student at the Homecoming Dance! We need volunteers for the drink table - keeping ice in the cups and the sodas poured - also, we need volunteers to help with the breakfast for faculty on Friday morning, and help is needed to decorate the stadium on Friday and at Jekyll for the dance. 9/6/11- I hope everyone had a great and restful long weekend. "They" tell me that today at 1:00 you should be able to see the grades in the parent portal, so I wanted to give you the heads up! Please check my rant on the newsflash from 8/23 about how zeroes can terribly affect a student's average.
-8/23/11 - Okay, I realize, now, that you all cannot see grades until Sept. 13th - how frustrating...so if you are concerned with a certain class, let me know and i will see if i can get you the grade. Or feel free to check with your students' teachers about how your student is doing:)
8/23/11 - Please make sure you check Infinite Campus regularly...grades are starting to be put in and I am already seeing zeroes which make me see
9/8/11 - 2 Excellent articles from the AJC : "So who did get into UGA this year? Here's a profile: http://blogs.ajc.com/get-schooled-blog/2011/08/08/so-who-did-get-into-uga-this-year-heres-a-profile/

"red" Zeroes are not an option!! They will ruin a grade point average. Students can also stay after to receive extra help if they need be - they should check with their teachers to see what days they are available.
8/15/11- Good Morning! A reminder - students report to the New Gym at the beginning of first block today for a pep rally - then they will go to first block! Thanks so much! Here 's to our first full week.... with the students!!
8/11/11 - We made it through the first day: some things to check on:
1)Remember, students go to homeroom tomorrow!
2)Your student should have received a student handbook in homeroom. Important pages: page 8 - how attendance affects getting drivers license and at the bottom of the page there is dress code information and consequences. Page 10: Electronice device policy and consequences and fighting and off campus rules. Page 11:Tardy policy and consequences. Page 14: the different bell schedules.
3)We are only making ACADEMIC schedule changes for the first few days, so your student needs to follow schedule until we can make other changes.
4)Please become familiar with Glynn Academy's homepage:http://flashmedia.glynn.k12.ga.us/Glynn.cfm
The parent/student tab has a lot of useful information as well as the calendar tab - Dr. Spence will put school functions on the calendar tab and you can always tell whether it is "A" or "B" day from this tab. So please take some time to become familiar with it all.
Have a great afternoon and evening.
8/10/11- one more thing...IF your student has Mrs. Bray, Mr. Cannon, Mrs. Graff, Mrs. Moran, or Mr. Davis for their third block class then your student now has SECOND LUNCH. We had to balance the lunches and this is the result. Thanks for giving your student the heads up. Because this lunch is later, they may need to eat a bigger breakfast!
8/10/11- Are you ready? Is everyone excited? Okay, several announcements:
1) On Thursday and Friday, we will have homeroom. Go there first. In homeroom, you will get your "official" schedule -check carefully in case a change had to be made due to class size. During this homeroom time on these 2 days your student will get several handouts and watch our principal, Dr. Spence on the announcements as he goes over important policies and rules of the school. We normally do not have homeroom everyday, so on typically your student will go straight to first period - ie on Monday, the 15th.
2)On Monday the 15th, we have a pep rally during first block. I believe this is to introduce Freshman to how pep rallies work in high school.
3)Freshman IDs will be made on Thursday and Friday-and your student must start wearing it on Monday.
4) Mark your calendars: on August 18th it will be picture day and Freshman will have their pictures made during 1st block.
That is all for now....see you tomorrow:)
PS- I will only be making necessary schedule changes - if you are in the wrong academic class - not if you do not like your elective class. At the moment we are very full and need to accommodate academic needs first. Thank you!!
8/4/11- Open House Tonight! 4-6pm. To find our where your homeroom is , it will be posted on the Cafeteria Doors, or to avoid congestion, you can now see your schedule on Infinite Campus!! So look up your homeroom and report there tonight to get a hard copy of your schedule and then go on a tour and find your classes and meet your teachers. Schedules are subject to change due to balancing of classes...Also, if you notice a mistake in your schedule, let me know - changes will not be made before tonight! Please make a point to hear Dr. Spence speak in the auditorium at either 4:30 or 5:30. Cannot wait to see you
8/3/11- Testing Calendar icon is updated with testing dates - standardized testing that is...
8/1/11- Hopefully you can see letter now! I have been working on it:)... bottom row of icons - "Welcome Letter"....let's cross our fingers....

The test should last an hour. Please bring a pencil. If you are interested in this opportunity, please confirm with Ms. Josie Love, Assistant Principal at josie.love@glynn.k12.ga.us by Friday, June 10th.
5/19/11.... Almost there..... We can do it!
I have been out of my office most of the month of May due to administering AP tests and now in charge of the EOCT exams...so bear with me in my response time to you all.
I believe students will bring home Exam Exemption forms today or tomorrow...they need to be signed by teacher and parent.. Student is only exempt from this one class period - they are due at school the rest of the time and days...
Today will be an awards/Honors assembly for students from 1st semester for Honor Roll and some other various awards during 2nd block.
Again, my apologies for being out of touch and locked in the "testing vault"....:)

The students can get a physical form from their coaches, Mrs. Lynette Adams (Freshman Academy office) or the Nurse (in the front office).
The parent/guardian must complete the first page of the form and sign and also complete and sign the consents in the second packet. The student should then return the completed/signed forms to the nurse, along with $10.00 (CASH ONLY…NO CHECKS). She will then prescreen the student and sign them up to have the physical done.
If the student has a pre-existing medical condition (asthma, diabetes, hypertension, heart problems, etc), they will need to have their physical done by their personal physician.
If you would help get the word out to parents and students, we would appreciate it!
Thank you.

1/18/11... Today, first semester report cards are coming home with your student. Please ask them to see it. To be a sophomore, your student must earn at least 6 credits including ones in: English, Social Studies, Science and Math. We are currently trying to put students back in core classes that were failed. Schedule changes may happen due to balancing of classes, so please bear with us. Thank you so much.
1/12/11...Please let your students know that they report to homeroom first thing tomorrow to pick up their new schedules! Go to homeroom First!
1/3/11...In addition, I have PSAT score reports and results in my office if your child took the PSAT. I have an icon on my website that helps with score interpretation - please check it out.
1/3/11...Good Morning and it is so good to be back in my office and not in the testing cell (I mean office!) Here is some info. that was sent to me from Dr. Spence about final exams....exemption policy etc. In addition, here is the exam schedule:
Friday, January 7th will be 3rd and 4th block exams...and Monday, January 10th will be 1st and 2nd block exams. The regular bell schedule will be followed. The following is the exemption information:
Please review this with your students. Thursday January 6th will be the day that determines eligibility for exam exemption. Students who meet the criteria below at the end of class on Thursday will not have to take their final exams. A form will be given out to students on Wednesday that they will bring home and get parent signatures -if they are eligible to exempt...transportation will not be provided, therefore parents will be responsilble (in the event they only have to come for one exam that day).
EXAM EXEMPTION INCENTIVE As an incentive for high school students to be present each day, exam exemption is a possibility. Students may be exempt from their final semester exams based on the following criteria. For courses awarding one (1.0) credit:
1. If a student has a course average between 90% and 100% and has no more than four (4) absences (excused or unexcused) in the class; or
2. If a student has a course average between 80% and 100% and has no more than two (2) absences (excused or unexcused) in the class.
For courses awarding one-half (0.5) credit the number of absences allowed shall be divided by two. The exam exemption possibility does not apply to state-mandated End-of-Course Tests (EOCT). All students must take EOCTs. The state of Georgia mandates that the EOCT exam grade count as a 15% factor in the final course grade of the semester. This policy does not supersede any Advanced Placement (AP) course requirements regarding exams.
12/6/10 - Good Morning!
EOCTs(end of course tests) are coming up next week. These are like final exams...and they are 15% of your student's grade....please make every effort for your student to be here.
Monday and Tuesday will be Physical Science, Biology
Wednesday and Thursday will be Lit/Comp 9 and Math I (accelerated also)
These tests are given in 2 days (parts I and II) and will be given in your students classroom. Make up testing is Friday.
Over the next 10 days i will be somewhat unavailable as I am in charge of all of the EOCTs from inventorying to organizing to counting back in....so please bear with me if i take awhile in responding to your phone calls and/or emails....I have to be in a secure testing location which takes me away from my office. Thanks.
11/29/10....One last big push for the Yearbook. Final sales will be tomorrow. You may go to room 3105 (Mrs. Hodges room) or order online through the website(with a credit card) - look for it under school events. Tomorrow (November 30th) is the final day. Yearbooks are $75 or $80 if you want your name on it.
11/9/10...What a busy day for me! I hope, by some longshot, your student may have mentioned "Mix it up Day at lunch"?? any chance....hmmm - well, here it what it is and what it is about::
What is Mix It Up?
Mix It Up is a national campaign to improve intergroup relations, reduce prejudice and build inclusive learning communities.
Students thrive—socially and academically—in schools that are inclusive. Mix It Up encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries that separate them from other students.
This year, Mix It Up at Lunch Day is Tuesday, November 9. Students identify the cafeteria as the place where divisions are most clearly drawn. The Day is a simple call to action, asking students to move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch.
http://www.tolerance.org/mix-it-up
How are we going to mix it up? Students at first lunch will receive buttons with different words on them such as Hope, Peace, Acceptance, and Tolerance (crossing fingers that Josie and I are able to make 400 buttons! I did, indeed, make 460 plus buttons by hand!!!). Certain Buttons will sit at specific tables. The tables will also be mixed up! We will hopefully have some adult and teacher volunteers helping with the process. So let’s give it a shot and Mix It Up!
So far, 2,868 schools are participating across the nation.

About PSAT/NMSQT
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT®. It also gives you a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools.
The PSAT/NMSQT measures:
- Critical reading skills
- Math problem-solving skills
- Writing skills
You have developed these skills over many years, both in and out of school. This test doesn't require you to recall specific facts from your classes.
The most common reasons for taking the PSAT/NMSQT are to:
- Receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. You can then focus your preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.
- See how your performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to college.
- Enter the competition for scholarships from NMSC (grade 11).
- Help prepare for the SAT. You can become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions you will see on the SAT.
- Receive information from colleges when you check "yes" to Student Search Service.
10/11/10...Wow, what a week last week! And this weekend is the homecoming dance..(All information concerning the dance and ticket sales can be found on the GA homepage) the fun never ends here at GA:) Thanks to all who helped last week: Big and special thanks to: Coach Derrick - helped build the boxing ring that went on the float, Home Depot for donating supplies, Andy Jones for getting us the flatbed truck and all the great "jungle plants", Jeff Burton for driving the truck during the parade, Community in Schools for donating supplies for the float, and Tommy Lee Carpet One for donating materials for the float, and thanks to the students and parents who helped build and decorate!

Tell your student, if they help, they get to ride on the float during the parade! We need helpers tomorrow and Wednesday. Tuesday - about 5 or so helpers would be great and then on Wednesday afternoon the big push - 10 helpers would be awesome. We have a great theme and several people I need to thank so far: Community in Schools - Jill Mitchell for donations on items for the float, Home Depot (Melody, Justin, Doug to name a few ) for their terrific donation of materials to help build the float, Mr. Andy Jones - providing the truck, flatbed and countless "jungle plants" for the float, Randy at Tommy Lee Carpet One for giving us the interior of carpet rolls for the float as well. 9/3/10..Let me clarify: if your student is not taking English, Math or Science this semester, their EOCT will be in May. So don't panic- you do not need to take a test if you are not currently in the class. I hope this helps. I apologize for any confusion or stress I may have caused.
9/3/10...I have updated my "Freshman Calendar" icon: On it, I have added some important dates for the EOCT's (End of Course Tests). These tests are required (state mandated) by your freshman. A freshman will take them in English, Math I, Physical Science or Biology. I have listed these specific dates in January 2011 on this icon. A student cannot be exempt from these state mandated tests. Please mark your calendars and/or agendas!
Enjoy the long weekend. I know I will:)
9/1/10..Agendas are in! Your student should be bringing an agenda home today. Encourage your student to write down assignments and long term planning such as tests and projects. The agenda is also used as a pass from class in case they are going to see another teacher or to an office.
8/30/10...A couple of announcements:
1) Picture day is tomorrow. All Freshmen will go 1st block to have their pictures made.
2) We are leveling a few classes: we have had to add a social studies teacher and move a math class. Please bear with us as some schedules will have to be changed to accommodate new teachers/sections. Thank you so much. Hey, we have survived the first 8 days!!
8/24/10... A message from the Freshman Academy Principal::
This morning, Mrs. Love and I, along with two of our campus Police Officers, visited all 9th Grade classrooms on the first floor. We will visit the classrooms on the second floor tomorrow and Wednesday. In our visits, we are speaking to the students on topics that we feel are necessary for our 0th graders to know about in order to be successful in 9th grade.
Coach Waters-Speaking on the 3 keys to success
A. Come to school every day unless you are sick. The # one reason 9th graders grades drop are because they do not make up work up.
B. Do your best in class each day. Just TRY. Our teachers are always willing to go the extra mile for those students that are giving a great effort.
C. Be NICE. Be respectful to your teachers and your classmates.
Mrs. Love is speaking about students ID’s, electronic devices, and dress code. She is also explaining the citations that students will receive. If a student receives a citation for violating dress code, not having an ID, or being tardy to class, they will receive a citation. Six citations will result in a Saturday School.
Campus police officers are speaking about our zero tolerance for fighting and aggressive behavior. They are also talking about protecting your belongings at all times. Please do not leave cell phones or IPODS unattended because of the possibility of another person taking them. We have a tough time recovering items that are stolen.
Overall, we want our students to know that our main job is to help them be successful and they can come to us at any time for help.

8/20/10..Information for students enrolled in Honors Eng/Lit 9 second semester:
Ninth grade students enrolled in second semester Honors Literature/Composition classes are invited to take the summer reading exam on the novel, The Book Thief at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 24th in their assigned second semester Lit/Comp classroom. The completed summer assignment must be turned in prior to taking the exam. The exam will be offered again at the start of second semester for those students unable to take the exam next Tuesday.
Also, I would like to remind everyone that wearing ID's will be enforced on Monday (the majority of Freshman have had theirs made) and dress code will be enforced. To read the dress code, please visit my "FAQ" icon and scroll to question #15. Also, don't forget students need to go directly to 1st block on Monday.
8/20/10...During today's announcements during homeroom, our prinipal wanted to make sure that everyone views the Student Behavior Code and the Exam Exemption Policy/Incentive. Both of these can be found on the GA Homepage: www.glynn.k12.ga.us/GA Go to the left margin and click on the blue student/parent resources tab. Both items can be found under this tab in alphabetical order. Remind your student that on Monday they do not need to report to homeroom - they should go directly to their 1st block class. Have a restful weekend!
8/19/10-For parents/students in the yearlong Honors World History/AP World History with Ms. Meeks: Please see the icon I just created on my homepage entitled "AP World History" - it is the last icon created so it is at the very bottom. Click on this icon and you will find the AP World Historyassignment and a message from Ms Meeks for today.
8/19/10... Wow! The first day is almost halfway over and we are making it. Lunch is always chaotic on the first day and there are always very long lines. There are a couple of reasons for this: The freshman don't realize we have at least 6 different lines and they all bunch together with their friends. Also, the seniors have 1st lunch and right now they do not have their "off-campus" lunch priviledges set up. Once the seniors are allowed to leave for lunch, the cafeteria will thin out quite a bit. Other than that, students have been in classes on a timely manner and things have been quiet. All is well.
8/18/10... Many schedule changes have been made since last night. Please check infinite campus for your new schedule. Mark your calendar: Picture day is August 31st for 9th graders.
8/17/10... Good morning! Lots of schedule changes have been made, so please check on Infinite Campus to make sure you have the most current schedule for open house tonight. At 4:00pm this afternoon you will report to your homeroom. Please be prompt as we have a tight schedule. For late arrivals, your day/schedule will start at 4:50-at which time you will report to your homeroom and follow the schedule. I have added many emails and some of these are for new students entering our system. If you are a new student, entering our system and you still do not have a schedule - please get in touch with Ms. Kim Caldwell x 3197 to see what is the hold up. Lastly, make sure you do register for Infinite Campus - go to GA homepage and click on parent/student tab and then find Infinite Campus and it will tell you how to register. See you this afternoon!
8/12/10..A letter from your Freshman Academy Principal, Mr. Steve Waters: Please click on the icon from my homepage of this site. The icon is called, "Welcome Back 2010" It is my last icon added, so it is on the last row, far right.
8/11/10...Some information for you. Our new principal, Mr. Scott Spence, is going to be using the Glynn Academy website to relay a lot of information. To get there: www.glynn.k12.ga.us/GA At this point in time, the Open House letter is accessible in the far right margin. At the bottom of our homepage, is a calendar that Mr. Spence is updating regularly. Please check it an update your own calendar. Also, on the left hand side of the homepage under the "student/parent"resource tab is the Student Handbook. Please become familiar with this because it will have our policies in it. In addition, for new parents to our system, you will need to create your account with Infinite Campus (IC for short) -this will allow you access to your student's schedule, attendance, and grades on a daily basis..The "Infinite Campus" tab is under student/parent resources...Once you click on it, it will give you information if you are a first time user. I hope all of this information helps. See you soon!
8/9/10...Hello! By now you should have received your schedules in the mail and/or you can view them on Infinite Campus(if you do not know what this is - get in touch with me or ask another parent!).I have been making some changes as you have called or emailed me. Please understand that errors - both computer and human may have happened and we will try to remedy them. On Glynn Academy's homepage: www.glynn.k12.ga.us/GA if you look to the very right hand margin you will see the Open House letter and schedule from the principal. You have to click on it to open it. It is important that you look at the schedule because students should report to their homeroom at 4:00pm and we will follow a mini schedule. I hope this information helps and the jitters are starting to be alleviated! See you soon!
8/3/10...Summer is drawing to a close, so that means Freshman Year is about to start! Mark your calendars for Freshman Open House/Orientation: Tuesday, August 17th from 4-6pm....details and schedule will be posted when I know them:) I just wanted to be able to get the date and time to you as soon as possible. Thanks - and more will be coming soon.
6/10/10...Welcome Freshman parents and students! My name is Mary Belechak and I am the Freshman counselor. If you were on the website at Glynn Middle that is great - I have simply "cut and pasted" and brought all of you over to your new home, the 9th grade Freshman counselor site. Please take a minute to browse the different icons. Some may be updated throughout the summer as we get new policies and procedures in place. Most importantly - if you have not started your summer reading if you signed up for Honors English - you should start this now - no procrastination! The summer book for Honors English is "The Book Thief: - the assignment can be found under the icon on my site entitled :"summer reading 2010" Welcome to Glynn Academy! 6/10/10...Okay, this is it, our goodbyes. This will be my last newsflash to you. I will be cutting and pasteing your email addresses and giving them to Angie Votsis, who will be your counselor from here on out. Her email address is avotsis@glynn.k12.ga.us and you will be happy to know she has a website set up just like mine! It has been a pleasure working with all of you - and as I tell the students- please come back and visit me:) IF you have the time, I have set up an icon on my page called "survey of counseling services"-it would be very helpful to me if you could fill out this survey. Other than that, good luck to you all and your students! Thank you for everything! Have a happy and safe summer.
5/25/10 ...Summer reading assignments: I have added an icon, "summer reading 2010" - it has assignments for AP US History, AP Euro , and Honors American Lit - please go there to get summer assignments.

5/17/10...Tonight's Honors night is for Upperclassmen only! I have had a few inquiries, so I thought I better let everyone know that Honors Night at GA is traditionally for juniors and seniors -some sophomores get awards. Because the freshman do not get anything there, we have decided to put together an Honors Assembly for just our freshman - and it will be this Wednesday. I know you would like to attend, but we are doing this for the first time - kind of a "trial run" so to speak - and we do not have all the kinks worked out - so we are asking that parents do not attend - but please ask your student if they received a certificate.
5/13/10... Attendance Certificates for summer:
If you have a June, July or early August birthday and you plan on purchasing driver's license or permit this summer, come to the attendance office before, after or during your lunch ONLY (do not come out of class) - certificates will be available after finals on May 26th...the cost is $3.00 - cash only
4/21/10...Progress Reports Come Home Today! This is it- the final push....but in case the worst happens and your student fails a course, please see my icon, "Summer School 2010 brochure"....with information on this year's summer school. Reminder: your student needs 6 credits to become a sophomore and 4 of them must be: Math, English, Science and Social Studies.
4/19/10 ...this is for all students who are taking the AP Human Geography AP exam on May 14th: Mandatory pre-administration meeting will be this Thursday, April 22nd from 3:30 until at the most 4:10 in the GA cafeteria. We will fill out paperwork to save us time on test day. Please bring: your social security card (or know the number), a number two pencil and a blue/black ink pen. If you have practice for a sport, I will write you a note. Many thanks.
4/14/10....under "Freshman Calendar" I have added exam schedule. More information about exemption will be coming, but i wanted to get this out to you so you could mark your own calendars!
4/8/10..I hope everyone had a restful Spring Break! A reminder from our school nurse about sports physicals:
I just wanted to remind everyone that Sports Physicals are April 15th at Glynn Academy from 6pm - 8pm. Prescreening must be done prior to that night, so students need to return the physical form which has been completed by the parent/guardian to me along with $10.00 so I can set them up an appointment. If you have a way to get the word out to parents to remind them, please feel free to do that. The students can come by before or after school, during their lunch or with a pass from the teacher during the day if that is ok with that teacher. Forms can be picked up in from Coach Ridings or Lynette Adams in the Freshman Academy.
Thanks so much!

3/17/10.. 9 week Progress Reports come home today! Please ask your student for it. Let's review what they need in order to be promoted to sophomore year: 6 credits - 4 of which need to be: Math, English,Science and Social Studies...Please make sure your student is on track.
3/11/10...Registration folders coming home today! There is a cover letter explaining procedures, but here is the short of it: sign yellow and pink copy of registration form and keep the pink - RETURN THE YELLOW COPY BY TUESDAY, MARCH 16th! Everything else is yours to keep.
There is a copy of the 4 1/2 week progress report and a transcript (not official ) and yes, there may be some transcript errors and "across the street" in technology land they are working on it - because we have made them quite aware. There is a green paper with descriptions of elective course offerings at GA and a yellow paper with elective offerings at Golden Isles Career Academy(remember, these classes have to be taken in a double block - so your student would be over there 2 blocks in the morning or afternoon - so unless they are only taking one semester of a foreign language - this may have precluded them from signing up for GICA this year). We asked them to sign up for 8 electives with their favorites starting with #1 etc. So, to recap, everything is yours including the folder, we just need the yellow copy back to their 2nd block/homeroom teacher. Questions or concerns, call or email me please.
*Don't forget, it is a teacher planning day on Monday - so no school for your students. Also, Progress Reports will come home on Wednesday, March 17th. *
3/9/10...I/we are a little behind in registration process...registering 384 plus students takes some time. Folders will not come home tomorrow, but hopefully the next day - I will keep you posted. Thanks for patience.
3/3/10...Here is a message from our school nurse pertaining to upcoming Sports Physicals:
Coaches:
Sports Physicals will be April 15th at Glynn Academy from 6 - 8pm, April 22nd at BHS and April 29th and JMMS. Lynette Adams in the Freshman Academy has copies of the physical forms with a cover letter if you need some.
If you would like me to do prescreening during a practice one day after school, let me know and I will try to make arrangements to be there. I will need them to already have their physical form completed and $10.00 before I can do the prescreeing.
Spring Break will be the week before the physicals, so I would like to get as much of the prescreening done prior to Spring Break as possible.
You can go ahead and distribute the physical forms whenever you would like. They can also bring the completed form with the $10.00 to me in my office and if I am able, I will go ahead and do the prescreening then.
Thank you!

2/28/10...Just a recap of events of the week. AP night was successful - enjoyed seeing some of you there. I thought we had a very entertaining Black History Month performance on Thursday - we enjoyed the McIntosh County Shouters- it was both educational and entertaining. We are a little over a third of the way through registration. Ms McKinney and myself will hit it hard this week.. We are pulling students one at a time and working through their registration form. Please help me out by discussing electives with your student. You can find them on this site under "Sophomore Electives " icon. They seem to know what they want academically, but choosing electives is more difficult. Thanks for your help. You can print registration form from my site as well and fill it out so they can bring it with them. Thanks. I am looking forward to a busy, yet fun week. It is so enjoyable to talk with the students one on one.
2/23/10... AP Information is tonight and I have added information about cheerleading tryouts under a new "Cheerleading" icon.
2/19/10...Don't forget AP night is Tuesday night at 7:00pm in the GA Cafeteria!! See you then.
2/16/10...The registration process for next year is beginning. I will be talking with parents tonight - and I am talking this week with 9th grade students through classroom guidance. During the weeks of Feb 22-Mar 5, we will be pulling your students out of class to have one on one advisement concerning next years classes. At this point, we will be filling out the registration sheet. On March 10, your student will bring home a folder with everything they need: a cover letter, registration info, and elective information. A completed registration form is due back to us on March 12th. To help you get started, please see my registration form on this website and the icon that discusses elective choices for sophomores - this will help you help your student with these decisions. Academic recommendations are being made by current teachers - this is the top half of the registration form. The bottom half concerns elective courses. Your student needs to pick 8 electives and rank them from 1-8. Elective descriptions can be found under another icon. I hope this heads up is helpful to you.
2/8/10....Progress Reports Come Home Today.
2/3/10...We missed you last night. :( For those of you who could not attend, I have put up a "PSAT score interpretation" icon...I have summarized the meeting - to the best of my abilities. I hope you find it helpful. Your student can come to my office tomorrow to pick up score reports - please ask them to do so between classes, before or after school, or during their lunch. Also, googling the PSAT site: www.collegeboard.com and clicking on the PSAT tab will provide valuable information about your scores.
2/2/10... The Brunswick News printed INCORRECT info...PSAT meeting is still tonight.

G.I.R.L.S.
(Girls in Real-Life Situations)
I am hoping to start a G.I.R.L.S group on Monday afternoons from 3:30-4:15/30 in room 7111. The curriculum is designed to give girls an opportunity to feel empowered, gain self-awareness, develop positive coping mechanisms, improve daily problem solving skills, feel connected with other girls, and make healthy decisions as they grow through turbulent times.
If you could please talk to your daughters and if they are interested, tell them to come see me. I have a parent/guardian consent form to give to them. Thank you so much for your support!
*It will begin Monday, February 1st*
1/13/10...Please mark your calendar: On February 2 at 6:30 pm in the GA auditorium a representative from the College Board will do a PSAT interpretation and your students' scores will be given back to them. This will be a very informative and helpful session. Both you and your students are encouraged to attend.
1/12/10...still brrrr outside! Report Cards Home Today...check backpacks and folders and pockets! Please realize that your student needs 6 credits to be promoted: English, Math, Science, Social Studies to be included in that.
1/6/10....brrrrr.....Open House Update: there will not be a PTSA mtg from 5:00-5:30 but we will be giving out schedules at that time if you have not printed your own. We will be handing them out in the GA building outside of the registrar's/counselors office - on the side closest to Mansfield Street. Offical Open House will begin from 5:30-6:30 where you can go from class to class and meet the teachers and find out other information. See you tonight - bundle up!
1/5/10...Happy New Year. I am back at work - although i did check email over the holiday! I look forward to hearing and seeing everyone in 2010. Please do not forget open house on Wednesday, January 6th: 5-5:30 will be the PTSA meeting and pick up schedules if you have not printed them yourselves. (i believe this will take place in the front of the auditorium b/c of weather conditions, if location changes, i will let you know:) 5:30-6:30 is the actual open house where you can go around and meet your students' teachers. We will not be ringing bells, so please pace yourself. I hope to see you tomorrow night!
12/18/09...an important math message:
On the Infinite Campus parent portal, parents can view an “in-progress” final average, which is in yellow. For students in Math 1, Math 2, Accel Math 1 and Accel Math 2, this average will not be final until January 6.
The state-mandated End-of-Course test scores for these courses will be returned to districts by January 5. Glynn County teachers will input the scores in the EOCT/Final category which makes up 15% of the student’s final course average. Students will receive report cards on Thursday, January 7. Report cards will indicate the final course average.
12/18/09...Happy Holidays to all! Your students' next semesters schedule can be viewed online on infinite campus. In addition, we will be having an OPEN HOUSE ON JANUARY 6th from 5:00-6:30pm. This is a time to pick up schedules and meet the teachers. Location for schedule pick up to be announced. I have had a very blessed semester working with all of you. Thank you!
12/09/09: Very Important Announcement Regarding Exam Exemption Policy: The Exam Exemption process is explained under my "Exam Info for Dec. 2009" Icon. Please go read the process that will take place. Hopefully this will answer your questions.
11/17/09...Progress Reports Come Home Today! Check those backpacks and bookbags and pockets. This is the halfway point for this 9 week marking period. Dont forget EOCT's and finals in December.
11/12/09... Testing information - Mark your calendar with these dates:
I have several EOCT(End of Course Test) dates for you. EOCT is different from final exams in that they are required by the state and count %15 of your students grade. An EOCT is not open to exemption as are the final exams. I will give you EOCT dates here, but they will also be on the new "testing calendar" icon. Please also remember the "Exam Info for Dec. 2009" icon. in addition, under my "FAQ" icon - question #13 shares the exam exemption policy. Please check all these things out.
EOCT DATES:
Dec 7 & 8: Math I and Acc Math I
Dec 9 & 10: Physical Science and Biology
Dec 11: make up day

10/05/09... Reminders:

2) The 9 week mark ends on Thursday, Oct. 8th: Remember, this is %42.5 of their grade: progress reports will be on Oct. 14th.
3) No school this Friday or Monday. Enjoy.
9/28/09: Mark your calendar for a community event!
Tuesday, October 6th at 7:00pm at The College of Coastal Georgia Auditorium: Chris Sandy: Covict with a Cause. This presentation will be seen by all GA students, Monday, October 5th.
In April of 2000, Chris Sandy was a normal 22-year-old kid. He had a good job, enjoyed playing basketball, fishing, and hanging out with his buddies. That normal life came to an abrupt end on the evening of April 11th when Chris decided to go to a party, have four mixed drinks, and drive down a country road outside of Atlanta, GA.Traveling at a speed of 77-miles-per-hour on a road that carries a 35-mile-per-hour speed limit, Chris Sandy's car crashed into an oncoming vehicle that was attempting to make a left turn into a residential driveway. The turning vehicle was literally cut in half by the force of the crash, killing the elderly couple inside.
Chris Sandy was found guilty on two counts of DUI - Vehicular Homicide and was sentenced to 13 years in a Georgia State Prison. Upon his release from prison, Chris will spend 17 years on probation.Chris Sandy's presentation includes a DVD which won two Emmy awards in 2009. The DVD was directed by Dan Johnson of Imagemaster Productions, a 1979 Glynn Academy Alumnus.

2) October 8th will be the 9 week mark. Please remind your student that this grade will be 42.5% of their final/semester grade. I am planning on doing some classroom guidance in the next week and a half to really enforce this and something important freshman things.

1) Mark calendar: We will be giving the PSAT to all freshman on October 14th. It will take place during the first two blocks of class. For more information on the PSAT, please go to this website: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about.html

9/09/09...Progress Reports Come Home Today....It is the 4 1/2 week mark - can you believe it? They will be given to your student during second block. Please ask to see (check backpacks and pockets) and discuss with your student. If you have concerns/questions, email the teacher and if that doesn't work it out, we can schedule a parent teacher conference - just let me know:)
9/4/09...Happy Labor Day! Today is early release day (1:20). A couple of reminders...two important pieces of paper went home yesterday with your student. One was on dress code and the other was on the flu. We are really going to start cracking down on dress code, so we could use your help with this. We have been seeing too much skin and that is basically the jist of it. Everyone enjoy the long weekend and be safe!
8/25/09...This will be one of my MOST IMPORTANT newsflashes of the year!! A letter will come home to you today carried by your student. This letter talks about the new grading policy under block scheduling, ie. how the grades will be weighted. At the 9 week mark (which will be October 8th) your student's grade will be worth 42.5%. At the 18 week mark (December 18) the grade will be worth 42.5% and the final or EOCT will be worth 15%. Here is how it is different: last year, a student could have a "C" at the 9 week mark and work really hard at the end and pull it up to an "A." Now, the "C" will be averaged with the "A".....does that make sense? I hope so, I have tried to simplify it for you all. It is very important that your students know they need to be working diligently right now and they cannot wait until the end. Every grade counts - and please emphasize to them how damaging a zero is to their average. ( time for a simple math activity with the family to show the damage a zero can do!:) There is no reason a student should get a zero on anything! 8/24/09.. The parent portal on infinite campus will be open on Thursday, August 27th. This will allow you to see your students grades in real time. Please log on to infinite campus if you have not done so. This allows you access to some valuable information - including attendance. Also, please note that the mid-nine week marking period is fast approaching! Can you believe that? The date is September 9th. 8/19/09...Happy Wednesday! Just wanted you to know that we have something called "Twilight School" that is beginning the week of August 24th.. It will actually start Tuesday, August 25th. Twilight School is every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-4:30. On these days, there will be 4 academic/core teachers that stay after school to help students. It may not be your students teacher, but the help is available and sometimes it is nice to get a different teachers perspective/explanation. On Mondays through Thursdays, all teachers are in the building until 4:00 to help students unless they have a coaching responsibility. Just remember to utilize Twilight School! It can be very beneficial to get that extra help. 8/13/09...For students interested in Science Fair (remember , you do not HAVE to do this, it is optional) If you are interested in doing a science fair project, and you are not currently in a science class, you must see Ms. Ingrid Brown before or after school before August 18th. She is located in the science building on the second floor, room 19. 8/12/09... 1) Picture Day is tomorrow. 2) We are leveling a few classes and making changes as needed. Please bear with us! 3) Hopefully lockers will be assigned by the end of the week. Happy Wednesday! 8/7/09...Okay, 2 days down...:) Here is some useful information: 1) Freshman have had their ID's made for 2 days straight - Everyone is required to wear them on Monday...remember if your student is forgetful, get a spare made...I am happy to keep it in my office. 2) I know lunch has been crowded and slow. We are hoping it is just freshman crowding to one or two lines when there are actually several stations/lines available. Also, as soon as seniors get their platinum cards, they should be able to leave for lunch and that will alleviate some of the crowd. 3) Picture Day is Thursday, August 13th: Freshman will have their pictures made during first block. Have a great weekend! 8/6/09..... So far so good:) Students are getting ID's made, we will be getting ready to go to lunch in a minute...all is well. I misspoke a few newsflashes ago....Mr. Ferguson WILL NOT be assigning freshmen their locks/lockers - we will do that ourselves through their homeroom (remember, that is their second block class.) Locker assignment will start probably in the next few days - I will let you know. 8/5/09...good afternoon...Are we excited? Nervous? Just breathe....( I am telling that to myself as well!) Good luck to everyone tomorrow and just be patient. We have made a lot of schedule changes and may need to make a few more. Tomorrow and Friday students will get ID's made and start wearing them on Monday. 8/3/09....Good Afternoon. Just a reminder that our Freshman Academy Open House/Orientation is tomorrow late afternoon/evening beginning at 5:30 to pick up schedules in the GA Auditorium lobby. The program will begin at 6:00 in the auditorium. We are asking students to sit with their first period/first semester teachers (rows will be labeled). After the presentation, we will dismiss to follow a shortened school schedule. Other news as of now: 1) ID's will be made for freshman on Friday and Monday. We expect them to be worn at all times after that. 2)Locks and lockers will be assigned during lunch ( for several weeks) by Mr. Pat Ferguson - an assistant principal. Please have your student see him during their lunch period (he will have a table set up in cafeteria). We provide the locks, so please do not bring one from home. 3) Please take a moment to review some new policies at GA. One is the Electronic Devices Acceptable Use and another is the Agreement for Success and Behavior form - both of these require a student signature. You may find them on Glynn Academy's Website - on the left hand side under the "Student/Parent" Resources tab - click on forms. That is all for now....if there are any changes/additions - you will be the first to know ;) 7/30/09... Spring Break Dates have been changed. Please go to the Glynn County Schools home page (www.glynn.k12.ga.us) and on the left scroll down to the "Parents and Students" tab click on school calendar. 7/28/09...Information from our fabulous PTSA: The Glynn Academy PTSA-Parent, Teacher, Student Association is calling on all parents, teachers and students-yes...students to become members and volunteers for our PTSA! We have lots of informative programs in the works for this year. There were over 2000 students at GA last year with a PTSA membership of only 184. Come on folks...Let's blow these numbers out of the water! Check out our PTSA website-linked to the GA website and/or our facebook page. The cost is minimal and if you register at Open House, your name will be entered in a drawing for some fabulous door prizes! Please stop by any of the tables at Open House and/or Freshman Orientation to find out ways you can help! PTSA at GA-the best way to stay "in the know" at Glynn Academy! 7/28/09...Orientation is on! It will be Tuesday, August 4th from 5:30 (picking up schedules) but program actually starts at 6:00pm until 8:00pm. We hope to see all parents and students alike! 7/16/09...Welcome again! I am adding names as i get them and still want you to spread the word and tell your friends about this site. (I dont believe I have all the St. Francis parent emails, so please tell your friends to add their names.) Take a second to browse my icons under this site...when i give you certain information, I may tell you which icon it is under. Today, I have updated the "Freshman calendar" icon with the academic calendar for 09-10 and with progress report dates on it. The other icons may not be current yet, but you can see what last years info looked like. The "FAQ" icon is helpful, but certain policies will be updated and as they are, I will let you know! Thanks for all and keep enjoying those last days of summer. 7/09/09...Welcome 9th grade parents and students! My name is Mary Belechak and I am the 9th grade counselor in the Freshman Academy. I will be your communication resource and hope to make your life a little bit easier by emailing you all kinds of information and trying to keep you informed. Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 4th as this will be the Freshman Academy Orientation from 5:30-8:00pm. A letter will be coming to you explaining all the details, but I wanted you to at least get your calendars marked! I am hoping you are having a safe and happy summer and we will definately be in touch. 7/09/09...Hello~I hope everyone is having a safe and happy summer. I am sad to say this is my last mass email to you all. I have to enter my new group of 9th grade parents and students. Hopefully your new counselor will set up her website shortly and you will hear from her. It has been a pleasure serving you all this past year and you can still email me if you have any questions or I can be of assistance. Thanks for all! Tom Morgan, former DeKalb County (Ga.) district attorney and now a lawyer in private practice, to speak to parents and teens on Thursday, April 16 at 7 p.m. in the school’s Memorial Auditorium. The author of Ignorance Is No Defense: A Teenager’s Guide to Georgia Law, Morgan speaks candidly about Georgia's criminal laws regarding sex, alcohol, drugs and theft. Morgan, who has lectured throughout the United States, Europe, Mexico and Puerto Rico, is the first cousin of local Superior Court Judge Amanda Williams. A question and answer session with the audience will be held after Morgan’s presentation. Morgan will also address Glynn Academy students at an assembly on Friday, April 17. His presentation will help to reinforce GA Principal Dr. Steven Ballowe’s “5 Ds – drinking, drugs, driving, dumb and dead.” As DeKalb County district attorney, Morgan prosecuted the first teenager in Georgia, a 14 year old, as an adult for murder under Georgia's 7 Deadly Sins law. Representing teenagers who found themselves on the wrong side of the law motivated him to write a book that explains Georgia's laws in an easy to understand language for teenagers and parents. Morgan’s book will be available for purchase after the program on April 16, which is being sponsored by the Glynn Academy PTSA with support from Outback Steakhouse. 4/14/09...Sports Physicals on Thursday (April 16th) reminder! One senior mentioned how excited she would be to take journalism and be on the yearbook staff b/c she hasn't been able to do that before! How exciting! Other advantages: more elective options, more academic electives, support classes as needed and credit recovery as needed. Please see the "block scheduling" icon on my website for even more advantages. As always, please email or call me if you need to further discuss options for your student and we can set up an appointment if necessary. 267-4210 x3204. Students must get the physical form from the coaches or the nurse, take it home and have their parent/guardian complete and sign the first page, bring it back to the nurse with $10.00 and the nurse will then make them an appointment and do their prescreening. No prescreening will be done the night of the physicals, so everyone needs to get it back as soon as possible, especially with spring break the week before. Thank you for getting the word out! There has been miscommunication about student ID's and what happens if your student is not wearing one. There will be no warnings, just a write up and detention. Detentions will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the cafeteria from 3:30 until 4:15.(It is necessary to sign in, so i would get there before 3:30!!) Students must have something to do and no talking or tardiness will be tolerated. We started wearing ID's in November, that is why administration feels that no warning is necessary at this time. Thanks for all!! 1/14/08 Several schedule changes have been made. Because of the new graduation requirements, your student must have 4.5 credits to become a sophomore including a complete year in math and a complete year in English. This means 1 full credit in each. To help some of these students we have worked hard to incorporate some of these classes back into their schedules this semester. Some students will have a study skills class to work on recovering math or English credit in addition to their second semester class of math or English. This way students will have an opportunity to earn a full credit in math or English. If your student did not pass AP Human Geography(failed with a 60-69), they can enroll in geography in intercession program (see my "study skills" icon) and earn a 1/2 credit in geography. If a student failed Biology 9A they can recover credit through intercession. Intercession schedules and applications are available in my office and Mr. McCarter's office. We will go into the classrooms this week to explain about the intercession program. I know this is confusing...any questions, please email or call me! 1/10/08....HAPPY NEW YEAR!! 1. No school tomorrow. 2. Report cards will come home on Monday, January 14th. 3. Please tell your student to report to homeroom first on Monday, January 14th. 4. Lanyards and ID's REQUIRED ON MONDAY, JAN 14TH! On Monday, they will not be admitted to class without their ID. They will receive one warning and then detentions will be assigned. Student Check Outs – Any student who needs to leave school for an appointment or funeral must bring a parent signed note, a fax, or an email (gaattendance@glynn.k12.ga.us) to the attendance office prior to the beginning of the school day (phone calls are not accepted). If the student does not drive, a parent or legal caretaker must checkout their son or daughter in the attendance office when checking-out. If the student has their own transportation, they must bring the note to the attendance office prior to the start of the school day. The attendance office is required to contact a parent by phone to verify the early dismissal, regardless of the student’s age. All eighteen-year-old students’ parents will be contacted by the attendance office prior to checking out. If the eighteen-year-old student has become emancipated from his or her parents, an administrator’s signature of approval is required prior to being permitted to checkout and leave. (Eighteen-year-old students WILL NOT be permitted to check in or check out at their leisure under any circumstance. ALL check-in and checkouts are subject to parent or administrator written approval and verification.) Attendance Notes – In addition to parent hand written notes and fax messages (912-267- 4642), parents can now send attendance notes or early dismissal notes to the attendance office by emailing us at gaattendance@glynn.k12.ga.us, that’s ga (for Glynn Academy) and attendance @ glynn.k12.ga.us! Pre-planned Family Vacations – Typically the school calendar is Board of Education approved and on line month prior to the start of the school year to assist families in planning vacations and other events and activities. In some situations, family vacations can only be scheduled during the school year. To assist students and teachers a Pre-planned Family Vacation form has been developed for Glynn Academy to keep all teachers informed and to assist students in making sure plans are in place for the students to make up any missed school work. 11/16/07: THREE important Announcements: 1) thanks to PTSA moms for breakfast for our Freshman Academy teachers and staff...it was delicious and greatly appreciated!! 2)Grades will be final in December. If any of you could donate a gift certificate to a restaurant (McDonalds anything)or maybe a bag or two of m & m's...please let me know. I already have some bowling passes to give out and some bookmarks. These are the types of things we are looking for and we would love your help. This was a random search - not because anything was going on - purely for safety reasons! I just wanted to let you all know , to try to squelch any rumors. The dogs do alert on medications, so please remind your student to check in all medications with our school nurse. Secondly, our wonderful parent volunteer, Ms. Davis wanted me to post this IMPORTANT MEMO about Homecoming: Calling all Parents: The Glynn Academy Homecoming Parade will be held at 3:30 pm on Friday, September 28th. The parade will take off from Mansfield Street, circle through downtown and return to in front of the cafeteria. This is a wonderful GA tradition. The Class of 2011 is planning to enter a float, as well as to provide marchers and musicians. Help by parents will be needed with the design and decoration of the float, as well as the making of the drums. A flatbed truck (small will do) and a driver is also needed. Students get out of school early on Friday afternoon to help decorate, so the truck must be available around 2:00 pm through 5:30 pm. If you can help during the school day or after school during the week of September 24, or on Saturday afternoon, September 22nd, please email JoAnn Davis at ted@dorcy.com, leaving your name, email address and phone number. Thank you. 9/6/07... Call to parents who want to volunteer in the Freshman Academy. Please go to the PTSA website (www.glynnacademyptsa.com) and click on the volunteer tab. We need volunteers first and last period of the day to help students makeup work that is overdue.( you may sit in the back of a classroom and just make sure your one or two students are working on their overdue work.) Hopefully you could commit to at least 2 days a week for a steady amount of time. Please think about it...we need all freshman to be successful!!:) Thanks for all you do! 9/4/07...Happy 4 day week (for me at least:) Announcement from front office: Please be reminded when you check your student out at 3:00, they will be absent from their last period class for 15 minutes, so this will count as an absence. Also, under my FAQ icon(#18), I have listed the difference between excused and unexcused absences- this too coming from the front office. 8/30/07...a few announcements from the front office: The attendance and nurse's office have moved to Mr. Baker's, the principal's old office. Attendance certificates and ADAP cards will be issued on WEDNESDAYS ONLY! NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!(I believe there is a $3.00 notary fee.)(This is the form to get your learners permit.) There will be NO extended hours in the Media Center on Thursday, August 30 due to Teacher Planning. 8/28/07...Please check out the PTSA's new website: www.glynnacademyptsa.com It is so important to get involved in this great organization! 8/27/07 Good morning! I have added check in/check out procedures for your student on the "FAQ" icon page (question #17). Also, please encourage your freshman to join clubs! And finally, dont forget, Friday, August 31 is an early release day for your student. School will be over at 1:20pm. 8/22/07...Welcome. I have added a lot of email addresses...I now have 439!! Please take a moment to browse through the website -the FAQ icon and the freshman icon have valuable information. We are getting to the lock/locker situation as soon as possible. We are still waiting for more locks to come in. The reason agendas are late is that we moved to a local printer and there has been some delay. The freshman teachers met this morning and we realize there is a need to provide some kind of snack to students in the afternoon since lunch is so early in the day. Mr. Lanham is going to talk to the cafeteria...Free tickets to the Aug 31 game for freshman is being discussed...we are bargaining for more tickets right now it is at the first 200 to show up at the "freshman gate" (I will let you know where this is). Finally...a word on TARDIES...let your student know that with the 3rd tardy, there will be a 50 minute after school detention. That is all for now. Thanks. 8/21/07... Freshman Academy Announcements: 1) Student pictures on Thursday...will take place during English class. 2)Students need to do a better job of picking up their trash outside during lunch. 3)Agendas have been ordered, but it may still be a few weeks away. 4) Football scrimmage game Friday against BHS. Hope you can make it! 8/17/07...We made it to Friday! Some of you may or may not know that we (The Freshman Academy) were lucky enough to receive a second counselor! With such large numbers, it is a GREAT thing. Mr. James McCarter will be the counselor for the Purple and Green Teams...if your student has most of his/her classes upstairs, Mr. McCarter is your man. So please direct scheduling questions, parent teacher conference requests, problems to him. I am the counselor for first floor students (ie. the Yellow and Orange Teams.) I still will be sending ALL of you these email notifications though. Have a great weekend. Mr. McCarters email: mccarter@glynn.k12.ga.us 8/15/07...So far so good! Just breathe! Please go to the FAQ icon (frequently asked questions).I have updated questions #1,15, and 16. Please read them: they address the tardy policy, the cell phone policy , and the student dress code. I want you to be informed, so please read. Thank you! 8/14/07...First day of School tomorrow! PLEASE HAVE YOUR STUDENT REPORT TO THEIR HOMEROOM FIRST!!!This should be listed on the top of their schedule. REPORT TO HOMEROOM FIRST....We will not always do it this way (typically homeroom will be INCLUDED in their second period class) but for tomorrow we need all freshmen to report to homeroom first. If you do not have a schedule, come to guidance in Sidney Lanier Building. Good luck!! We are here to help you! It will be okay:) 8/7/07...PM...There is no school for freshmen on Monday and Tuesday of next week. School starts on the 15th!! Orientation for freshman is this Friday, the 10th. 8/7/07 SCHEDULE CHANGES ONLY IF YOU WANT TO DROP AP HUMAN GEOGRAPHY...I realize you dont have access to your schedules yet, but you should know if your child signed up for this AP class. 8/7/07...I have added a lot of new addresses so I wanted to send an email. Also, I have had many schedule change requests...that is fine, but we need you to realize that one change can change the teachers and the rest of your students schedule! That being said, if anyone else out there want to drop AP Human Geography, you need to do it by the end of the day tomorrow (Wed.) b/c this changes your childs team and we are trying to finalize things! Thanks! 8/2/07...Welcome Back! I am officially at work! Important announcement: On August 10th (Freshman Orientation) there will be a Parent Open House that afternoon from 3:00-5:00pm. Once you know your child's team (they will get that information that morning) then you may go to their team in the Sydney Lanier Building and meet everyone...If I hear about anything else...I will let you know! Great to be back at work and I am looking forward to this year! 7/12/07...Important letter can be found on the "Orientation Icon". You will also receive in the mail...but this gives you a heads up! 7/11/07... Welcome. I have added several new addresses, so please read all the newsflashes to get yourself caught up! 7/9/07....Although schedules are on MyGCBE....these may not be final and should not even be on the website yet.We are trying to get them taken off now! The reason being...all the freshman teachers have not been hired yet...so if your childs schedule is online, the classes are correct, but the teachers could change and the order of the classes could change as well. Sorry for this inconvenience and false hope. Enjoy the last few weeks of summer! 6/28/07...MARK YOUR CALENDARS!! On August 10th, we hope to have a Freshman Academy Open House...where freshmen will receive schedules, meet teachers and get to see where everything is...rumor is we may have some kind of lunch/cookout! I say this as tentative info, but I do want you to have the latest info as I have it...I dont have times yet, but if i had to guess it would be morning with a noonish lunch...other fun activities are planned as well. I will keep everyone informed! Hope everyone is enjoying their summer! 6/4/07-Welcome new parents to my website! Please browse the site...Please look at the "Freshman icon"-important dates are already listed! I will update regularly. Please ask your friends if they are on this email list...some email addresses I could not read on the registration form - so I would like you to check with friends to make sure they are getting this valuable tool for communication and information. I check my email regularly and look forward to working with you all. Parents are reminded to establish an account on www.MyGCBE.com, a web site maintained by the Glynn County School System that allows parents to access important information about their child.
