This is from the head of our English department:  Any student enrolled in an Honors English (or AP) class for next year should check the G.A. website for the Honors summer assignments per course. It is our expectation that Honors students should be self-directed enough to be certain about required assignments, even through the summer.

5/15/12
I've been out of pocket with EOCTs, so please forgive me. I'll be working through June 30th, so you can still contact me after graduation.  Now, here's a word from our administrators regarding summer school:

Here's a summer volunteer opportunity from Magnolia Manor!

Hi, my name is Olivia James and I’m the activities director at Magnolia Manor, a nursing home on the island. We have openings for youth volunteers this summer. All times and jobs are needed, including helping with special events, doing one to one visits, and helping in the resident garden, so there is something for every kind of student. I know that students need volunteer hours for different reasons, and this is a wonderful place to get them!  Please share my contact information with anyone interested.  There is just a short application and parent permission form they need to fill out. Thanks so much!

If interested after reading more, contact me.

Yesterday, today and tomorrow I am giving registration folders to students for next year's class selections.  I'm meeting with them and walking them through the course selection process, taking the white copy of their registration form and asking them to take their folders home, review it with the parents, get parent's initials, and return yellow copy to their math teacher.  I will return to the math classes this Thursday & Friday, as well as next week to collect the yellow forms and check them over for accuracy.  The courses selected on the yellow copy of the registration form will be put into the computer.  If a yellow form doesn't come back, I'll use the white form that I collect on my 1st class visit.  Please look for those registration folders!  They're filled with pertinent information about next year.  If you still have questions about your student's courses for next year after you've reviewed the registration information in the folder, you can give me a call or email me or come in to discuss any questions or concerns.

3/13/12
Don't forget about the Open House at the college Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. for students interested in taking classes for dual credit at the college next year (see below).
Please look for the 9 week progress reports that will be given out to students during school this Thursday.

3/5/12
I just received a little more information about enrolling in the ACCEL program at CCGa.  First of all, the Open House will be in the new Health Sciences building in the conference room, which is room 112.
They would like for any student interested to contact them at (912) 279-5717 to  RSVP, so that they can get an
idea of how many to plan for.

3/5/12
Any of my students interested in taking classes at the College of Coastal Georgia next year may want to attend an Open House at the college on March 15th at 6:00 p.m. in their new science building.  Also, those who want to take college classes must plan on applying to CCGA and must post an SAT score of at least 500 in reading and math.

I will have information about ACCEL (college classes), as well as other elective options, in the registration packets; those will be distributed between March 19 and 21 in the math 2 classes.  Please look for the registration packets and discuss next year's course selections at home.  Please return the yellow registration form with a parent signature to the math 2 teacher.  I will return to the math classes from March 22 through March 29 to collect the yellow copies of the registration forms which must be signed by a parent.  Those are the registration forms that will be used to enter next year's course selections into Infinite Campus.

3/1/12
AP Test Payments are due in Ms. Meeks office this week.  Checks should be made payable to GA. Students can go to her office before school or during lunch to make their payments.
Also, any students interested in applying to be on the yearbook staff next year can pick up an application from Ms. Hodges.  They will enroll in this class as an elective for next year, if selected.

2/28/12
I sent a News Flash on 1/11/12 providing information for students who want to apply to be a member of the Community Bank Junior Board of Directors next year.  Please look for that announcement and make sure that all interested students have completed the application process by the dealine.
Also, if you know that your student failed an EOCT in Dec. but passed the course, we will be retesting those students the week of March 13th.  Those students must participate in remediation beginning NOW, so if your student falls into this category, please have him/her see me or Ms. Meeks right away.

2/15/12
IMPORTANT INFORMATION RE. AP TESTS FROM MS. MEEKS:
We are asking that ALL AP teachers please circulate a
sign-up sheet for every AP class in order to  determine who is interested
in taking  the exam.   Please remind all students that there is
a cost of $87 per exam.  You may ask that all students who have concerns
about the cost of the exam sign up and then come by to see me.  I will
actually be calling in those students who are eligible for assistance with ONE
exam.  Students who meet the criteria will have one exam paid for by AP
College Board and the state of GA.  This sign- up sheet will be in your
box tomorrow andwe need it back by Friday the 17th.  The deadline is rather rigid this year and we must adhere to
the criteria.  The deadline for the payment is March 1st .  We must order exams by the deadline  and need a few days to prepare. Please have students bring checks made out toGlynn Academy.  Please advise students to come before
school and during both lunches
.  (We have to lock payments in the vault in the afternoon.)  Please discuss the seriousness of being committed when signing up for the exams.  Refunding is not an easy or recommended process.  There are refunds for serious reasons to cancel like illnesses.  There is a cancellation fee of $13 per exam but we really do not want to have students to sign up if they are not serious about the exam.

2/10/12
Well, I have some bad new and some good news!  First--the bad news--I'm sending home some failure letters regarding the grades of some of my cherubs who need to light a candle under themselves, academically.  The good news is that yesterday the counselors helped Ms. Love hand out a 3-pack of yummy cookies to about 1,000 students who hadn't received any discipline referrals in the 1st 4.5 weeks of this semester!!!  It was fun to do a small, positive thing for youngsters who are continually making good choices!  Sadly, some of the ones who got cookies will also be getting a letter, but, there you have it!  If you don't receive a letter in the mail, things are going pretty well so far this semester.

2/8/12
Most college scholarship money will become available to students during their senior year.  Until then, please be advised to exercise caution as you receive information regarding scholarship money that requires an upfront fee from you.  There are many free lists and websites that connect deserving students to scholarship money (click on my "Scholarhip" icon), so check with the library, the Better Business Bureau, or me before spending money to gain access to this type of information.  Do not believe the promotions that read, "We'll do all the work for you!".  Not true.  Students will need to apply for scholarships and grants themselves.  That being said, my former students who applied for the most scholarships received the most money.  It requires a lot of work on the part of the student, but in these economic hard times, it's worth it.

1/17/12
Parents:  There will be an AP Night on Thursday, Feb. 23rd at 6:00 p.m. in the GA auditorium.  If you have questions about GA's advanced placement courses, please feel free to attend!

Students will be meeting in homeroom 1st thing tomorrow morning to get their new schedules for 2nd semester.  If they need one, they can either request a schedule change form from their homeroom teacher or stop by the guidance office before/after school or during lunch to pick one up.  Or you or the students can email me directly.
Students should have received their PSAT results prior to the break.  Below is some info from the Collge Board regarding the PSAT results.

EOCTs are going pretty well so far; let's hope the scores are as good as the coordination!  LOL!  I've spoken with lots of students about next semester's schedules, but I've been out of pocket with those darn test for the past week.  If I'm not able to speak with your child before the break, please know that I'll be working on Jan. 3 and 4, so they can contact me then.  Also,  on Jan. 5 when the students return, please remind them to report to homeroom before 1st block to pick up their schedules.  Thanks!  If I don't contact you before, have a terrific Christmas/holiday break!

11/29/11
I hope everyone had a restful Thanksgiving holiday.  We have a big push until Christmas break, so hang on tight.  Students will have end-of-course tests for one semester block classes in December.  For A/B classes, the EOCTs aren't until the end of the year.
For those students who are interested in exploring a career in the medical field, they should contact the Southeast Georgia Health System (aka Brunswick Hospital) about their Medical Explorers program.  For details go to www.sghs.org and find the Medical Explorers program under the Our Community tab, or call 466-7081 or 466-7038.  The program is always accepting new participants.  There is a $10 per year enrollment fee.

11/21/11
I had a good time meeting with all of my sophomores in classroom guidance during the past few weeks.  Ther math teachers brought them to the computer lab, and I gave them some materials (grad requirements, blank credit check form, transcript) and gave them some announcements.  It would be illuminating for you to get a hold of those transcripts and check them out; while you're at it, make sure the important school stuff gets out of the backpacks and into a folder.  Many sophomores said they're not getting the information that comes to parents on my News Flash list, so please let them know that they have the option of emailing me with their own addresses and getting the News Flashes themselves.  If they have an email address, please encourage them to do that.  While we were in the computer lab, students logged on to www.gacollege411.org and went through several steps toward the creation of their high school plan of study.  You might want your youngster to show you this website since it's very important.  They can continue to work on their plans by logging onto their account and bringing up the plan that they've already started.  If it hasn't already happened, SOON you will be able to find out your child's HOPE GPA by going onto their account.  You can also create your own account.  When they're seniors, student will need to apply for their HOPE scholarship or HOPE grant through their 411 account.
Until the next time. . . . HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

11/1/11
Don't forget about Parent Information Night tonight in the GA auditorium at 6:00 p.m.!!!

10/25/11
On Oct. 12 we gave all the sophomores the PSAT as a way of preparing them for the SAT.  On Saturday, Nov. 12th they will have an opportunity to take the PLAN, which is a preparatory exam for the ACT.  If interested, I will have to know by the end of the day tomorrow so that I can order the tests.  There is a cost of $15 involved, but students will have until Nov. 4th to pay the fee.  Students should come into the counseling office and sign up with Tammy tomorrow or you can email me, and I'll tell her to put your child's name on the sign-up sheet.  Please make sure we have the fee by Nov. 4th and things will work out fine.  I'll be discussing the SAT vs. the ACT when I address my students in a classroom guidance session during the 1st 2 weeks of November, and I'll be talking about the tests at the Parent Information Night on Nov. 1st.

10/24/11
Congratulations to my sophomores who are rocking through this semester and doing well in all their classes!  It's so much getting to know these kids!  And now, an announcement:

Real Life is an after school program
which offers academic tutoring by certified teachers and provides students a
rich understanding of the demands and rewards of a variety of careers. Students
will be transported to the Teen Center where they participate in activities
each day.

10/21/11
I just looked at my list of failing grades, and I must say that I am very upset and concerned about it.  The 9 week progress grades have been posted, so if you don't see the progress report that your students received at school, please look on Infinite Campus to view his/her progress.  If you are concerned about a grade or a class, please contact that teacher directly and speak with your son/daughter to discover ways to improve the grade(s).  I will also mail a letter to the homes of those who posted 2 or more failing grades.  Parents--please keep in mind that this is a progress grade, not a final grade grade, so there is time to bring these grades up.  The one semester block classes will be final at the end of this semester prior to Christmas break.  The math classes and some of the American Lit. classes will go until May before a final grade is posted.  If you don't get a letter from me next week, be thankful!  :o(

10/17/11
As a point of clarification, our Parent Night will be on Nov. 1 at 6:00 p.m. in the GA auditorium.  Thanks!

10/14/11
From November 1st through 14th I will be training the sophomores on the state-run website for career and college preparation called gacollege 411.  Your student may have already utilized this site, but all of them will be trained by mid-November.  A representative will be here on Nov. 1st and 2nd to assist Ms. Belechak and me in the computer lab.  She will also be with us as we invite the parents of freshmen and sophomores to join us for a Parent Information Night in the GA auditorium at 6:00 p.m.  Please put this date on your calendars!  We look forward to seeing you then.

Also, don't forget the PROBE College Fair on Oct. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Glynn Place Mall.

10/10/11
This is a reminder that "real" sophomores will be taking the PSAT this Wednesday during 1st and 2nd block.  If possible, they should have their social security numbers to put on their test answer sheets.  This is a College Board exam, and along with the SAT and AP exams, the College Board will want to group student test scores together for the same student.  The best way to do this is for the student to begin using their SSN.  While we're on that topic, in order for students' GPAs to be uploaded and caluculated for the HOPE Scholarship during senior year, the students' SSNs need to be in the district's database.  The colleges and universities will also require the use of SSNs.

Students who may be interested in taking courses at the College of Coastal Georgia for dual credit will need to have an acceptable SAT or ACT score, as well as a GPA of 3.0 or better.  The minimum SAT is 500 verbal and 500 math.  The minimum ACT score is 21 verbal and 21 math.  They will accept either an SAT or ACT score.  STudents who want this option next year should plan to take the SAT and/or ACT this spring.

Finally, here's an announcment from our school yearbook staff:

Sophomores--show us your smile!  Come by room 3105 and let the High Tide photographers snap your famous smile for a class collage to appear in the 2012 High Tide during lunch on Oct. 18 & 19 and from 3:30-4 on Oct. 20.

9/28/11
An issue that affects many sophomores is how to develop good study habits.  For students who struggle and for students who are used to getting excellent grades, circumstances change when the course content becomes more difficult.  It's important for students to be challenged by taking the most rigorous courses that we offer, but their organizational and studying BEHAVIORS need to change accordingly.  I posted some study skills ideas on the Study Skills page of my website (See the icon on my home page.)  Also, under the STAFF section of the GA website home page, there are graphic organizers that students might want to explore.  They all need a way of keeping up with their assignments and other activities.

9/26/11
If you are a female sophomore or if you have a daughter who is a sophomore who has excellent grades and is interested in studying at Georgia Tech for college (engineering, architecture, science, math), please let me know.  They are having a special day for sophomore and junior girls who may be interested in attending GATech.

9/26/11
When you get the opportunity, you can check out the other icons on my website.  I've updated the Study Skills page with lots of good information for students who want to improve their grades this year.

There's an excellent opportunity for students to participate in an after-school program at the Teen Center.  Students may pick up applications from our secretary, Tammy, in the counseling office, if they're interested.  The application requires parent signatures.  The program is titled Real Life and includes academic tutoring as well as career and college prep skill building activities.  Transportation will be provided from GA to the Teen Center, and parents would be responsible for picking students up.  This is a great opportunity for sophomores trying to raise their academic performance and prepare themselves for a bright future!  Please send your student to the counseling office for an application.

9/16/11
A few announcments:
1.  Don't forget about the State of the School Address on Monday evening, Sept. 19th at 6:00 in the GA auditorium.
2.  Students were given progress reports at the beginning of the week.  Please ask for them or go to Infinite Campus to monitor your students' grades.  With specific concerns about classes/grades, please email or call the appropriate teacher.  I have been and will conintue to be meeting with my most at-risk students to try to get them back on track.
3.  Sophomores will take the PSAT on Wed. Oct. 12 in the morning here at GA.  Please make sure that they are well-rested and fed before coming to school that day.
4.  The National Association for college Admission Counseling (NACAC) has scheduled a national college fair on Oct. 15 at the Prime Osborn Convention Center in Jacksonville from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  This an opportunity for students to network with representatives from colleges and universities from around the country.
5.  The PROBE College Fair is scheduled for October 27 at Glynn Place Mall from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  This college fair focuses mostly on Georgia schools, but colleges from some neighboring states will also be represented.

9/19/11

Dr. Spence's State of the School Address will be on Monday evening, Sept. 19th at 6:00 p.m. in the GA auditorium.  Students whose parents attend will receive a "free homework pass"!!!  Please try to be there!

9/6/11
The PTSA is looking for students willing to serve as representatives to their organization.  If your student is interested, applications are available from Tammy in the counseling office.  This would be a good way for sophomores to get involved; it's one of the only things that they're eligible to do, since many other school and/or community activities are for juniors and seniors.

8/26/11
I just updated by News Flash email list, so I hope to reach more of new parents with this News Flash today.  At two weeks into the semester, we should just about be finished with schedule changes.  Some changes were instigated by student requests, and some were implemented by necessity due to balancing class sizes.
Sophomore students should have received a letter regarding the PSAT from their American Lit. teacher.  They were to read it, sign it, have parents read & sign it, and return it to their lit. teacher or Ms. Meeks by today if interested in taking the PSAT on Oct. 12.  If you haven't seen the paper, please ask for it and make sure that your student returns it to Ms. Meeks office if they want to take the test.  FYI-the letter was printed on a lovely lavender shade of paper; if you can't find it, please ask your student to bring home another one by picking it up in Ms. Meeks's office.  We will accept the signed paper on Monday.
Please encourage our cherubs to work diligently in their core classes which will require an end-of-course test.  This would include Am. Lit., math 2, biology, physical science, and US history.  Whether they take the EOCTs at the end of this semester (for block classes) or at the end of 2nd semester (for year-long classes), they need to absorb the material for the purpose of retaining it over time rather than learning something for the next day's quiz or test.

8/15/11
It has been so much fun getting to know some of my new students and parents!  Discussions about schedules, class choices, and schedule changes are best handled between the student and me in my office.  Parents are welcome to attend, but since I'm just getting to know these young people, it's really important that my students and I begin to establish a face-to-face relationship.  Email is OK, but relationships are so much more interesting!

I know that some of my sophomores are already beginning to think about college.  Representatives from various colleges and universities will be on campus throughout the year to speak to prospective students.  They are usually in the career center, adjacent to the counseling office, during lunch time.  These visits will be announced and will appear on the GA calendar.  Speaking of colleges, an organization called 100 Black Men of Atlanta will be holding a college fair on Sept. 24th in Atlanta.  For more details contact kroberts@100blackment-atlanta.org.

8/4/11
For Open House this evening, I'll be posted in the downstairs lobby of the science building. Please come to me, and I'll have your homeroom number.  The parent portal for Infinite Campus was activated this morning in case you want to go directly to your classes.

8/3/11
I've updated the testing calendar, and you can see it by pressing the 2011-12 Testing Calendar icon on my home page.  The most important tests for sophomores this year are as follows:
National Tests, such as the PSAT (preliminary SAT)and PLAN (preliminary ACT)
End-of-Course Tests or EOCTs (American Lit, Math 2, and US History)
AP tests (for those in AP classes)
The new state requirements for graduation affect the class of 2014.  This group will need to pass the writing grad test.  In the areas of English, math social studies, and science, they must pass either ONE EOCT per subject area OR they must pass that subject area GHSGT (Georgia High School Graduation Test), which are being phased out.  For example, in the English area there will be 2 EOCTs.  One was last year for 9th grade English, and one will be given this year for American Lit.  If they pass one or both of those tests, they will not have to take the English grad test during their junior year.  The math EOCTs are for math 1 and math 2.  The science EOCTs are in physical science and biology.  The social studies EOCTs are in US history and economics.  For the class of 2011, last year's graduates, it was all about the GHSGTs.  For the class of 2014, it will be all about the EOCTs.  It will be interesting to see how this change plays out over time.  I guess change is the one thing we can always count on!!!

Wecome to the 2011-2012 school year!  It will be my pleasure to guide the GA class of 2014 from 10th grade to graduation.  I have yet to re-do the rest of my website, but yesterday I loaded Ms. Belechak's email list from last year and didn't want to wait to send my first News Flash of the year.  Once my website is updated, my hope is that our communication will be facilitated 1) by your receiving my News Flashes, 2) by your ability to access information on the main GA website, 3) by your access to your Infinite Campus account, and 4) by your access to your child's teacher websites, as well as my own website.  Additionally, I encourage you to email me and/or call me when you have any questions or concerns.  Now that the class of 2011 is on its way, I'm learning to recognize the names of my new students, and I look forward to recognizing their faces and getting to know them and their families.  Perhaps I'll meet you at Open House next Thursday between 4 and 6 p.m.!!!

The following information is from our principal, Dr. Spence regarding Open House and the opening of school.
Open House is Thursday, Aug. 4th between 4 and 6 p.m.  Students should report to their homeroom teachers.  They can find their homeroom teachers' names in 4 locations:  at the entrance to the cafeteria or the entrance to the science building or at the front or back entrance to the GA building.  Proceed to the homeroom for a copy of the student's schedule.  Families can proceed informally to each classroom, probably making sure you visit the first semester classes first.  Be sure to attend an information session by Dr. Spence in the auditorium at either 4:30 or 5:30 when questions can be asked.  Students will report to homeroom on the first two days of school, Aug. 11 and 12, in order to be oriented to school procedures and changes in the student handbook.  Look for papers from school on the evening of Aug. 11th that require a parent's signature and must be returned to the homeroom teacher the following morning.  School information can also be found on the website at http://flashmedia.glynn.k12.ga.us/Glynn.cfm.

Schedules will not be mailed out.  They may be viewed on Infinite Campus or picked up during Open House.  I hope to see you all there!
