Welcome to Language Arts! As most of you know, this year will be a new
adventure for all of us. We will be combining our writing and reading
classes into one Language Arts class. Throughout the year, we will explore
many genres of literature as well as modes of writing. We will prepare for
the writing test in January, focusing on Expository and Persuasive writing,
and the CRCT tests in April.
Notebook Divisions: Please divide your Language Arts notebook in the
following way. Your syllabus, reading log, and daily grammar practice should
be the first pages of your notebook. Follow that with four dividers. The
dividers should be for Grammar/Writing Notes, Literature Notes, Written
Assignments, and Graded Papers.
Grading System: 15% 9 weeks Exam
45% Daily (includes classwork, homework,
quizzes)
40% Tests (includes final written pieces)
Weekly Procedures:
We will begin each day with 15 minutes of silent reading. You must have a
book to read when you enter the classroom. Georgia Performance Standards
require that you read 25 novels this year. In order to do this, we must read
each day. You will be responsible for completing a reading log each day. We
will go to the library once a week. Your first time without a book, will be
a warning. Consecutive incidences will result in silent lunch and detention.
You will receive a spelling worksheet on Mondays. This is homework and is
due on Thursdays. We will have a spelling quiz every Friday.
We will have Daily Grammar Practice every day in the last five minutes of
class. You are expected to keep track of these in the front of your
notebook. I will randomly check these for a daily grade.
Differentiation:
We will be differentiating, from time to time, in class this year. This
means that you may not always have the exact same assignment as another
student in the classroom. My goal is for each of you to be doing the
activity best suited for your learning. At times, there will be choices
given to you in regards to an assignment. The one choice you never have is
the choice to do nothing. When we allow learning to relate to our lives, we
begin to value the experience and the knowledge we are gaining.
How to succeed in Miss Motlows writing class:
Always do your best work.
Participate in class.
Be prepared. I will not provide pencils and paper on a regular basis!
Be on time for class.
Demonstrate respect for yourself and others.
Take responsibility for your make-up work when you are absent. You
will have three days to complete work for each excused absence.
Be prepared by studying class material, keeping your binder
organized, and by having your course supplies each day.
Follow all Greenbrier Middle School and Columbia County School System
policies, especially the student code of conduct, the attendance policy, and
the dress code. Please review these documents at www.ccboe.net/support or in
the student handbook.
