I will asseess each student on sight words on a regular basis. I will send the results home so you can see how well your child did. Once a child truly leearns a sight word, he will be able to identify that word when requested. If he knows the word at home but not at school or knows the word one day but not another, he hasn't committed that word to memory. In essence, he hasn't genuinely learned the word. If this happens just continue to practice that particular word or words until your child can say it whenever he is asked.

It is important that you practice the sight words with your child every night until he/she learns them. Your child will need your help at home. If your child isn't picking up the sight words in class and isn't getting help at home, he/she will fall behind. Since we cover so many sight words in a month's time, if your child falls behind, it may be hard for him to catch up. It is important that this doesn't happen.
Sight word tips:

Sight words are words that should be recognized instantly without the child having to figure these words out. Many of them rarely follow any rules or guidelines. This means that many of them can’t be sounded out, they will need to be memorized. This will take lots of repetition and practice. I am listing some activities that can help your child with sight word identification below. Good luck!

-Word games such as matching, Concentration, and Bingo
- You can make two sets of the sight words and play Go Fish
- Word search games
- Flashcards
- Selection of emerging reader books with plenty of sight words
-Allow your child to use a dry erase board to practice the words
We will stop several times in the year and review. This will give students who may have fallen behind a chance to catch up. Please grab this opportunity if your child needs it. Additionally, I will be covering the assigned sight words each day with the students in class.

I will start the students out with five spelling words. The spelling words consist of sight words and three letter words that can be sounded out. Ex: Like, the, cat, fat, hat. Over time, I will gradually add more. In first grade, your child will start with ten spelling words. Later on in the year, sentences will be added to those words. Give your child a practice spelling test at home on the Thursday before the test. It may help your child perform better on the test Friday. Simply, say each word out loud and then use it in a sentence for your child to write down. Have your child correct the pre-test. He/she should study only the words he has misspelled.

 Tips on practicing spelling words:

·       You can write them on index cards and have your child study them like the sight words

·       Have your child spell them with magnetic letters

·       Have your child write the spelling words 3 times each and read them back to you

·       Have your child spell the words in shaving cream or pudding (can get messy but it is fun)

When you are showing your child the flashcards, change the order in which you show them to your child. Your child may memorize the order of the words and not the actual word itself. Your child may also be memorizing special marks or bends in the card that triggers the recognition of the word but may be unable to identify this word in a different setting.
