Parent Introductory Letter

Dear Parent(s),

I am excited about teaching your child this year. We are going to have fun and learn at the same time. Let me introduce myself. My name is Keia Medlock and I am your child’s teacher. I have two children. My son is nine, and he attends school here at Johnson. My daughter is five, and she attends here as well. My paraprofessional’s name is Theresa Culpepper. She is a great asset to our classroom.

Your child will bring home two folders each day. One folder is a homework folder. Your child’s daily work, important notes from me or the office, and homework will be sent home in this folder. It is important that you check the homework folder daily and remove all papers and send this folder back empty unless there is something that needs to be returned. If you don’t remove the papers, the folder will rip and it won’t last long. Your child will not be assigned any official homework until September 10th. Please have your child complete homework assignments in pencil. Homework will be sent home on Mondays and be due back on Thursdays. The second folder your child will be bringing home is a traffic light folder. I use the traffic light system in my classroom. Your child will be placed on green, yellow, or red. Green means your child had a good day. Yellow means your child had to be talked to several times and had some difficulties obeying the classroom rules. Red means your child did NOT have a good day. Please address what caused your child to get on red or yellow at home so he/she will have a better day the next day. The traffic light folder has a calendar on the inside. I will put what light your child is on in the calendar block each day. Please initial the calendar block each night and have your child return it the next day. This way I know that you have seen what light your child is on. If your child is on yellow or red there will be a behavior report inside the folder so you can see exactly what rule(s) your child broke. Classroom discipline problems can prevent effective teaching and learning. In order to provide each child with the learning environment he/she deserves, discipline problems MUST be kept to a minimum.

The children eat an early lunch and are usually hungry by the afternoon. I am asking that each of you donate snacks (pretzels, cheese puffs, crackers, cookies etc.,) and drinks to our classroom starting next week. All the children in the class will benefit from this. I will provide snacks for the first week of school. I will send a note home when the children get low on snacks and drinks. Thanks for all you help.

You may send a small pillow or blanket that will fit in your child's backpack for rest time. The students don't lay on mats but they rest their heads quietly on their desks. We release at 3:00. All car riders are walked out to front of the school where the white portable is located. We will be waiting for you under the tree. Please be on time. Keep in mind that I may have a faculty meeting or conference scheduled right after school. After the children are dismissed, I come back into the classroom to prepare the materials for the next school day. If it is raining upon dismissal, the children won’t be walked outside. You can walk with an umbrella to Mrs. Jacobs’ emergency exit. It is  the door facing the playground right across the hall from me or you can go to the office and have them intercom your child.

If you ever need to talk to me or schedule a conference, you can reach me at 748-2795. Another effective way to reach me is by e-mail. My e-mail address is kmedlock@mcsdga.net. I check my e-mail several times a day, and I will get right back to you as soon as I can. You can also send a note. Our class has a website. Please try to check this website at least once a week. It will have suggested books and authors, standards, classroom rules and procedures, newsflashes, a class schedule, a calendar of events, and so much more. I update this website at least once a week. You can reach this website two ways. You can go there directly by typing this web address in: www.teacherweb. com/GA/JohnsonElementaryColumbus/Medlock/ Another way to get to this website is to go to our school website, find kindergarten and click on Medlock. The school web address is Johnson.mcsdga.net

Please take a few moments to go over the classroom rules.

1. Treat others the way you want them to treat you.

2. Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

3. Clean up your area when you are finished.

4. Raise your hand before speaking. Only one person talks at a time.

5. Obey all school rules.

Severe Clause: Any student who physically hurts another child, uses profanity, or disrupts the class in such a way that the other children are directly affected, will be sent to the office immediately.

  • Students who stay on yellow or red repeatedly will get an office referral and receive In School Suspension. Please talk to your child about the importance of behaving his or her best at school each day.
  • If a student stays on green all day, he/she takes a trip to the goody jar. If a student stays on green all week he/she gets to take a trip to the treasure chest. Each child is at least two warnings before his/her name is written on the board. A check beside a student’s name places that student on yellow. Two checks beside a student’s name, places that student on red.
  • Yellow light-loss of recess  Red light-loss of recess and center time

Thank you for your support,

Mrs. Keia Medlock
