Fall 2011
1.  Discuss a trying and difficult experience you have had facing harsh circumstances. If    none had happened to you personaaly, think of someone else who perservered during a difficult time.

2.  When is it acceptable to be a nonconformist? Think of an example of the prompt proving true--it can be a current or historical persceptive or a personal experience. When it is most inportant to be a conformist? Explain.

3. TSL---Discuss one of the following  themes from The Scarlet Letter and relate it to real life.

      a.  It is by recognizing  and dealing with our weaknesses that we grow stronger.
      b.  We must accept responsibility for our actions or suffer the consequences.
      c.  True repentance must come from within, not just be imposed upon us.
      d.  Revenge destroys both  the victim and the seeker.  

4. Fireside Poetry (10/31)  Journal prompts: Why are people so concerned with death, and why is it so often a literary topic?  What type of natural environment provides you with a sense of meaning? How so and why? (I do not mean the beach at PC during spring break!)

5. TGG (December 2011)
Respond to any two of the following journal prompts. 
   a. Outward appearances can be deceptive.
   b. Attainment of a dream may be less satisfying than the pursuit of that dream.
   c. Wealth can breed carelessness.
   d. Blind pursuit of an ideal or goal can be destructive.
   e. The American Dream can be corrupted by the desire for wealth.

Journal Prompt #1:  Have you ever been criticized for not conforming?  Explain. 
What are some ways we’re expected to conform in our society?

Journal Prompt #2 :  Have you ever admitted to something you
didn’t do?  Explain the situation.  Is there ever a reason to falsely say
you’re guilty of something?

8/9/10 "I Remember"
Write a brief five-line poem where each line begins with I remember. You do not have to rhyme, but may if you like, nor do the lines have to be of the same length. Reflect on one rememberance such as a vacation, a new experience, summer etc.
