Many of you reading this are trying to learn more about me before you
send your child to me on their first day of fifth grade. Teaching is a second
career for me, I spent about 10 years in sales before becoming a teacher.
This is my seventh year teaching fifth grade, my fifth at Kemp Elementary.
In my personal life, I am married with 3 children (11, 5, and 3). I love
sports (University of Alabama, Colts football, Reds/Braves
baseball) and the outdoors. I grew up in Mobile, Alabama; attended the
University of Alabama for my B.A. degree and University of Alabama-Birmingham
for my Masters.
I believe in hands-on activities as much as possible, especially in
Science and Math. Research shows that kids retain more material if they have
ownership. We will be working on research projects throughout the year in
Social Studies. Some of the things we do will be new for the kids and
therefore also new for the parents. I'll give students control over their
learning, giving them ownership. They will have the ability to choose the
path of learning based on what they want to accomplish, what grade they want
to earn. This new responsibility sometimes has its growing pains with
students and parents. The kids will be relied on to meet deadlines, work
independently at times, research, and honestly report their progress. I've
seen phenomenal work and progress with this approach and the kids love the
freedom to learn. It creates a dynamic classroom.
My wish for the students is for them to always push themselves. I
believe that for myself too. I like to push myself to be the best teacher I
can be. I've implemented online grades, a growing web site, real-time access
to see your child's classroom, a hands-on project-based learning environment,
and I continue to try new things to help your child succeed. I don't expect
perfect grades, I only expect their best effort and I am committed to giving
the same.
If, at any time, you have questions about the curriculum - please let me
know. I look forward to a great year, where we'll push your child to achieve
and find success.
