CURRENT ISSUES IN SCIENCE – 1st Nine Weeks

Due Dates:  #5 - Monday 10/19, #6 - Monday 11/2,  #7 - Monday 11/16, #8 - Monday 12/7

 

Instructions:

You will find and read a total of four articles related to science.  It can be about any science discipline (EXCEPT the topics below).  You can find the article in a newspaper, recent magazine or on the internet.  The article must be no more than 6 months old!  The article must be attached and turned in; otherwise, it will NOT be graded.  You are looking for the science concepts that will help you learn about what’s going on in the scientific community as it relates to the real world!

 

YOU MAY NOT DO A CURRENT ISSUE IN SCIENCE ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS!!!

 weather related events (floods, hurricanes, volcanoes, earthquakes, snow, etc), weather reports, articles about car crashes, articles about murders, homicides, etc, articles about robberies, obituaries, sports stats and results.  Remember…you are looking for the science concepts that will help you learn about what’s going on in the scientific community as it relates to the real world!

 

Follow the following format on your paper:

Part I

·    Current Event #

·    Title of the article

·    Author of the article

·    Date the article was written or magazine date/volume/issue

·    Source of the article

~   Newspaper: name of the newspaper

~   Magazine: name of the magazine

~   Internet: the complete address of the article (look in the address bar).

 

Part II

Summary:  One paragraph summary of the article in your own words (copying word-for-word is plagiarism and will not be graded!).  Use your best writing and be thorough (do not short-cut it!).

 

Part III

Vocabulary Words:  Highlight 3 words in the article that you do not know.  Write the words and their definitions on your paper (use a dictionary).  If there are not 3 words that you don’t know, choose 3 that are difficult, highlight them, and define them).

 

Part IV

Analysis:  Write  one paragraph that includes a description of (1) why you chose this article, (2) what YOU think about the issue discussed in the article,  AND (3) your perception of how your article relates to science.
