Physical Science

Mrs. S. Lloyd

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Physical science is designed to expose students to various physical phenomena of our world and universe. The student will acquire a basic understanding of the forces and energy that affect matter. Topics include measurement and concepts in physics, the laws of motion, work, and the various forms of energy and wave motion. Students will be taking an End-of-Course test (EOCT) at the end of the semester to determine if they have met the standards required by this course and receive credit.  This is a required course for graduation and students will also be tested on the standards during the junior year on the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT).

PHYSICAL SCIENCE CONTENT STANDARDS

Students will:

·         investigate our current understanding of the atom.

·         explore the nature of matter, its classifications, and its system for naming types of matter.

·         distinguish the characteristics and components of radioactivity.

·         investigate the arrangement of the Periodic Table.

·         compare and contrast the phases of matter as they relate to atomic and molecular motion.

·         investigate the properties of solutions.

·         relate transformations and flow of energy within a system.

·         determine relationships among force, mass, and motion.

·         investigate the properties of waves.

·         investigate the properties of electricity and magnetism.

TEXTBOOK:  Physical Science (Glencoe)

MATERIALS:   1 ½” Ringbinder Notebook, notebook paper, 6 dividers, pens, pencils.  Additional materials such as colored pencils, markers, crayons, scissors, stapler, tape, will be needed for projects and assignments completed at home.

 CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

Students will:

·         be in their seat when the tardy bell rings.

·         be prepared by bringing their materials everyday (this includes the textbook and notebook!).

·         begin their “DO NOW” assignment upon entering the classroom.

·         leave food items and liquids (i.e., sodas, juice) in the cafeteria.

·         have respect for the classroom, other people, and themselves.

·         adhere to all expectations, guidelines, and rules in the KHS handbook and MCSD handbook.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

  • Students are expected to dress properly and have their I.D. visible at all times.
  • The agenda for the day is posted on the screen for students to see as they enter the classroom and should prepare for or complete the assignments listed.
  • Students will be expected to organize and maintain a notebook/portfolio.  Guidelines will be given to the students that will help them be successful with this.
  • Sleeping will not be tolerated.
  • Bathroom breaks and water fountain breaks will not be allowed during school time.  Students will receive 3 emergency passes each nine weeks for emergencies only.
  • Students will often work in groups and should refrain from excessive socializing, loud voices, and migrating to groups other than their own.
  • Students are required to read one RC (Reading Counts….similar to Accelerated Reader) each nine weeks, take a test on the book, and write a paragraph analyzing how the book relates to science.  Additional requirements will be posted on the class website.

 MAKEUP WORK

  • It is the student’s responsibility to complete makeup work.  Reminders will not be given to the students.
  • Students have 3 days to bring an excuse AND makeup any work missed.
  • An area of the room has been DESIGNATED AS A MAKUP WORK STATION that will enable students to see what they missed.  The Daily Agenda will also be posted on the class website for students and parents to see.
  • Tests, quizzes, labs, videos, and some group assignments must be made up after school.
Study guides, worksheets, and bookwork can be completed on the student’s own time, but within 3 days.
  • Tests that are announced in advance will not be delayed due to a one-day absence the day before a test is given.
  • Unexcused absences result in a ZERO ON ALL GRADES taken for the day….this includes suspensions.  It is suggested, however, that the student complete the work so he/she will have the opportunity to learn the material since they will have to apply the knowledge on the End-of-Course Test.

 DETENTION

  • Detention is held on Friday’s for one hour (2:55 pm – 3:55 pm) in the classroom (room 416).
  • Reasons why detention may be given include, but are not limited to:  tardy to class, sleeping, being off-task (not doing assignments), excessive talking/socializing, misbehavior with a substitute, not materials, not following procedures.
