April 2009

OUR FAVORITE ACTIVITIES:

We are beginning our unit on plants and growing. We have already shared several wonderful
stories. The children are looking forward to getting further into the unit and actually getting
to plant seeds and observe caterpillars as they become butterflies!

MATH:

We are beginning to introduce time telling skills in math. We are exploring the hour hand and
using it to estimate time on an analog clock. We are continuing to explore place-value concepts
and equivalent names for numbers. We will also introduce the $1 and $10 bills as well as
reinforce coin names, values, and exchanges. The students will continue to practice extended
counting, estimation and other numeration activities.

LANGUAGE:

Using our Imagine It! curriculum we will read What’s Alive?, A Tree is a Plant, Becoming
Butterflies, and All Living Things. While working with the stories, we will learn new
vocabulary words, practice clarifying our ideas and making connections to things we already
know. We will practice drawing conclusions and sequencing story events. We will also study
several pieces of fine art.

SCIENCE:

In science we will continue our study of plants and growing things. The children will plant
seeds and watch them grow. We will also make butterfly houses and watch caterpillars turn into
butterflies.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

In Social Studies we will be studying rules and how they keep us safe. We will compare rules at
school and home to laws that govern the entire country.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH:

This month we will continue our studies of the New Testament. We will discuss some pretty
prevalent character issues that Kindergarteners have to deal with on a personal level. Our word
for the month is “Conviction”.

LOOKING AHEAD:

• April 9th – Early Dismissal at 11:45.
• April 10th and 13th – School Closed
• April 18th - Tina Lowrey FUN RUN begins at 7:30am

Thank you!
