Meet and Greet is Wednesday, August 17, 2011. What should I bring to Meet & Greet?

Meet and Greet is a wonderful opportunity for you to
meet your child's teacher and visit the classroom.
However, there is necessary paperwork that must be
completed at Meet and Greet. We strongly encourage
you to print and complete all necessary documents
prior to Meet and Greet. This will allow you more time
to tour NDA's new Media Center and Cooperative
Learning Center! The forms can be found on the
Third Grade website under "Documents to Download/Print."
The first 5 documents are mandatory. The 6th document
is only if your child plans to participate in after-school sports.
Your child should also bring all of his/her school supplies
to Meet and Greet. Your child will appreciate your assistance
with carrying these supplies!

What time should my child be at school?

"Elementary & Middle School:
School starts promptly at 8:00 am for the Elementary & Middle
School
Campus (1st through 8th Grade). Students who arrive after 8:10
am are considered tardy, and their parent must walk their child
to the foyer and sign the child in with the receptionist.

Tardiness will be recorded on the student’s attendance record.
Excessive student tardiness will be addressed by school
administrators." (in student handbook)

School officially begins at 8:00, you should try to get
your child to school between 7:40 and 8:00. Each morning we
start at 8:00 am with important announcements, acknowledgements,
prayer, and the Pledge of Allegiance. Your child should not miss
this important community time. At 8:10 your child goes to
homeroom, unpacks, and prepares for first period. The first
class begins promptly at 8:15. Should your child not arrive on
time, his/her will day start off very hurried and stressed as
your child tries to unpack and get to his/her first class.

Will my child have a lot of homework in third grade?

While the expectations increase and the curriculum becomes more
challenging, your child should not have more than 30 minutes of
homework each evening. Your child should read and practice math
facts each evening. These are important skills that only improve
with time and effort. Your child will also have other
assignments that should reinforce what we are doing in class. If
your child struggles with his/her homework, please send in a note
with your child. It is our job to help your child understand the
material.

Can my child bring a water bottle?

Yes, your child can bring a "refillable" water bottle to have
during school and during PE. This water bottle MAY NOT be a
plastic disposable water bottle. Please label your child's water
bottle and it must go home everyday to be cleaned and refilled.

Does third grade have snack time?

we do not eat lunch until 11:45.

I would like to bring in a special treat for my child's birthday. What is the third grade policy for celebrating a birthday?

We understand how important birthdays are for 3rd graders.
However, because we have 60+ children, we cannot celebrate as a
team. You may, however, arrange a small celebration with your
child's teacher. This "small party" will be from 2:30 - 2:50 and
you must stay to distribute the treats and clean up after.
Please contact your teacher 1 week prior to the birthday so the
teacher can let you know what days are available. All food items
should be nut free.

Winter uniform begins Tuesday, October 11, 2011. What should my child wear?

Your child will continue to wear the same pants/skirt as the
summer uniform. The shoes and socks do not change either. Every
day your child will wear a white OXFORD shirt (short or long
sleeved) with the NDA logo on it. On Mondays (MASS days) your
child must wear the NDA vest with the school crest on it and the
school tie/cross tie. The rest of the week, your child can choose
to wear a vest, a cardigan, or a pullover sweater. It must be
hunter green WITH the NDA crest on it. Fridays are still spirit
wear days, so the uniform requirements stay the same. We will
continue to have PE in the mornings, so your child will come to
school in his/her PE uniform. Make sure your child has warmer PE
clothes (NDA sweatshirt/NDA sweatpants) because your child cannot
wear non-uniform clothes to PE.

As it gets colder, what type of coats/jackets can my child wear at school?

Your child may wear any coat/jacket to and from school, as well
as at recess. These coats/jackets are NOT allowed to be worn
inside the school (in class, etc). An NDA fleece or NDA nylon
jacket can be worn over PE sweatsuits if necessary. The NDA
fleece is allowed in the classrooms, but the nylon jacket is not
to be worn in class.
