PE Heat Policy
PE staff members will decide before each class whether or not to hold PE
outside. This decision will be based on the National
weather service heat index chart, which coincides with the National Athletic
Trainers Association. The temperature and humidity will be
checked immediately prior to each PE class on weather.com and the decision
will be made at that time. The Air Quality Index will be
checked each morning and PE will be adjusted accordingly.
This same policy is to be used for recess.
By using the chart provided by the National Weather Service the heat index
will be obtained. PE will be modified according to the
National Athletic Trainers Association Guidelines which are as follows.
If the Air Quality Index (AQI) is at or above the code red range of the EPA
color scale (unhealthy to very unhealthy) PE should be held inside. If
the AQI is in the orange range (unhealthy for sensitive groups) outdoor
exertion for all children should be limited in duration and intensity. Children
with history of Asthma should be watched carefully during these days and be
allowed back inside the building or rest if any difficulty breathing or
coughing.
