Kindergarten frequently asked questions and reminders.
A
If your child is absent, please email me bleonard@ndacademy.org and call the school on 678 387 9385 to let me know. A note stating the reason for the absence must be brought to school after the absence.
Our Attitudes we are encouraging are: Appreciation, Commitment, Confidence, Cooperation, Creativity, Curiosity, Empathy, Enthusiasm, Independence, Integrity, Respect, and Tolerance.

If you would like to send a birthday treat with your child on or near his/her birthday, please feel free to do so. These treats will be eaten during our snack / lunch time. Birthdays are recognized during our calendar routine as well. We will recognize summer birthdays at the end of the school year. Please do not send birthday party invitations to be distributed at school unless all children receive an invitation.
Our parent rep. will send home book order forms for you and your child to look over every month. Book clubs offer books at reduced prices. It's a great way to build your child's home library!

Parent and Teacher conferences will be held three times a year. Please watch for information and reply accordingly.
Communication is important. Feel free to contact me whenever you have a question, comment, or concern. You can reach me by email bleonard@ndacademy.org, by note or set up a conference to see me in person.
“Can the Khakis” will take place on half days. Information will be given out accordingly.

Discipline is simple. We work hard as a class to make the classroom a positive and safe place for all. Our essential agreements are:
1. Be a good listener
2. Be an eager learner
3. Have a positive attitude
4. Show respect towards others

I check email daily. If you have an email address that you’d like me to be aware of, please let me know.
Please complete and return the emergency card promptly. If your home or work phone number change, please inform the office and me.
Early Release Days will take place on the first Wednesday of each month. Please check the school web site for dates. Children are released for car pool starting at 11:45a.m. The children do not have lunch on these days, they will have snack time.

Folders are sent home on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please return them the following day.
Information about field trips will come home when needed and will be detailed in the field trip permission slip.

Germs…if your child has a bad cold or suffering from some ailment, please help us stay healthy by keeping your child at home to prevent the spreading of germs.

Students will have homework suggestions in Kindergarten. Homework assignments will vary and will be sent home as suggestions. Unless otherwise noted, please return the homework the following Monday.
I
Independence is a goal for students because it builds self-esteem and self-confidence. Kindergarteners are very capable of doing many things on their own and I encourage them to do as much as they can for themselves in the classroom. Please work on the following self-help skills at home with your child: zipping, tying, dressing, etc.
Inquiry is another goal for our students. We encourage you to help your child to become an inquirer.

Writing takes place every day in kindergarten. One way we accomplish this is through writing stories in our journals during writer’s workshop. Encourage your child to write at home for a variety or purposes.

Keep updated by reading and checking the web site for suggestions, notes and information.

Our class will visit the library once a week. Our library associate is Ms. Brown. Your child will check out a book when we visit the library and return it within the following week. If your child forgets to return the book, they will not be allowed to check out a new book until it is returned.
Our class eats lunch at 11:00a.m. You are welcome to join your child on occasion for lunch. Please inform me if you plan on joining us.

Every Friday we invite a parent, friend, and grandparent etc. to be the Mystery Reader. Please be at school by 8:30a.m. prepared to read for 15 – 20 min.
We will attend Mass once a month. Please check the web site for our scheduled dates.

A unit newsletter will be on our web site. Please keep informed about what is happening in our class.

Our doors are always open to you.
Please be Open-minded and open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals, points of view, and cultures.

When picking up your child, please follow the car pool procedures to keep our students safe.

Guided Reading books need to be returned daily. They will either be exchanged for a new one, or sent home again for more practice.
READ, READ, READ. Record reading on the reading logs.
Report cards will be sent home twice in the year.

The PYP Transdisciplinary skills we focus on developing are: thinking skills, social skills, communication skills, self management skills, and research skills.
Show and Share - the children will have a turn every week to share some research they have done related to our unit of Inquiry.

If your child has any changes in their transportation please let me know in writing, by email, or telephone.

Volunteers and visitors are welcome and must register at the front office.
W
Wet and/or dirty clothes can be uncomfortable. Please send an extra set of clothing (shirt, pants, socks, underclothes) in a Ziploc baggie marked with your child’s name on the outside of the bag. These will be kept in your child’s back pack and used by your child in the event they are needed.
