Our Class Theme

Our class theme is camping. Some of the things that tie into this
theme include: behavior chart, ranger of the week, have-a-go sheets,
and some areas within our classroom.

Lunches

We eat lunch in our classroom. Your child needs to bring a lunch
and a snack every day. Friday they have the option of chick-fil-a
and we do not have snack because it is a short day. The students
are welcome to bring something that needs to be heated. We do
have a microwave in the classroom. I just ask that it not take
longer than 2 minutes to heat up so that they will have plenty of
time to eat before recess.

Show and Tell

We have show and tell every Friday. This is a chance for the kids
to learn more about each other. They get to practice speaking in
front of the class and get a chance to be in the spotlight. They
can bring anything that they would like to show. We especially
love it when the students bring in something that is important to
them (maybe a craft they made or a picture). Also, your child is
encouraged to be a "reporter" and bring in newspaper clippings or
magazine articles that they find interesting. Before you bring in
a pet, please get permission from me. These sometimes take longer
to show.

Birthdays

If you are sending in treats, please let me know. You can send
them in with your child or bring them in yourself. We like to
have them in place of snack, usually around 2:00 or 2:30.

***If you are sending in invitations for the class, please send
enough for the entire class or all the boys/girls.

*Also, I regretfully cannot attend ALL birthdays, so I make it a
policy not to attend any, hopefully avoiding any hurt feelings.

Book Clubs

Every month your child will bring home a Scholastic Book Club
order form. These forms have a lot of selections for you to
choose from. A due date will be included when the order forms go
home. Our class will receive free materials and books based on our
order points. I have received lots of free books in the past so I
feel this program is a win-win situation for both home and school!
Happy reading!

Volunteers

We love to have volunteers in our class. We have plenty of
opportunities for you to help out in the classroom or things that
you can do from home. We really appreciate it when parents can
come in to help with lunch and recess so that Mrs. Coffey and I
can have more time to plan and prepare fun activities for the
class. Just email me or call me to let me know when or how you
would like to volunteer.

Behavior plan

A behavior chart is included in the calendar inside the take home
folder. If your child has to move their clip a brief note will be
included to explain why it was moved. The general system is:
Blue: Great day! Green: warning given. Yellow: several warnings.
Red: aggressive behavior and/or very disruptive, note and/or call
home.

We also incorporate a very positive reinforcement system in our
classroom to reward good behaviors. We collect bugs in our bug
jars. Bug stands for: Being Unusually Good. The students earn
beads that they trade for bugs and on Fridays they get to turn in
their bugs for prizes.
1 Bug: Candy drawer
2 Bugs: Small treat drawer
3 Bugs: Treasure Box
4 Bugs: Coupon (lunch with a friend, extra computer time, etc.)
10 Bugs: PARTY for the class in honor of the special student.

Take Home Folders

Please check the front pocket for any important papers that require
your immediate attention and the back pocket for completed work
(great stuff for the refridgerator!!). Any money or forms should go
in the zippered pencil pouch. Sight words/spelling will be in the
front pocket or the sheet protector.

Missed assignments

My general policy is not to give out homework/assignments ahead of
time. If your child has to miss school I will work with them during
DEAR time to catch them up on any missed work. We do a lot of hands
on activities in class and it is hard to send that home.

Tests

My policy is to keep all tests on file in the classroom. I will
send home the graded tests for you to look over and sign (letting
me know you saw it). Please return it in your child's MOOSE the
next day. You are welcome to go over any errors with your child
but please do not mark on the test. If your child makes below 80%
they will have a chance to work on the concept and retake the
test.

Homework

Nightly: READ!!! and review sight words and/or spelling words.
Please check on their language arts sheet in their folder for any
homework assignments that need to be turned in. All homework
assignments are due on Friday. We also have spelling and sight
word tests on Friday. The students will also begin working on
their self selected reading at home. These will be sent home
every other week unless notified otherwise. These will include a
parent log and a story map for the students to complete. More
details will be sent home as needed.

Conferences

Every six weeks you will have the opportunity to review a progress
report or report card and schedule a parent/teacher conference.
If at any time you have concerns or questions about your child's
academic progress or social behavior, feel free to contact me to
set up a conference at any time. I just ask that you make an
appointment first. Please do not just drop by at the beginning or
the end of the school day. These are both very busy times of the
day and my attention is on the students.
