---FIRST GRADE---
Bonjour!! I can’t believe that it is already November. We had a great time
in October—speaking French, learning about farm animals, reading stories about
fruits and vegetables, singing Halloween songs, and eating brie. I hope that
the 1st graders have been sharing what they’ve learned with you. If not,
please encourage them to teach you some French and share some of the songs
from class.

Our visit with Tire-Bouchon the pig will soon come to an end. We will spend
most of November visiting Grégoire la Grenouille (Gregory the frog) in
Montreal, Québec. We will meet his family and talk about our own family
members and pets. Our “visit” will involve packing for cold weather,
telling Thanksgiving stories, and exploring Québec.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Our next food day will be December 5th. The first graders can look forward to
sampling gingerbread cookies and hot chocolate (the traditional treats for St.
Nicolas Day).

---FIFTH GRADE---

This month, we will continue our Visages 3 unit, “Pauvre Alphonse!”. The 5th
graders seem to be enjoying this theme very much. So, far our focus has been
about making accurate descriptions about clothing and hair color. As we
continue the story about Alphonse (the prize-winning pig that is repeatedly
stolen from the county fair), the students will see that describing facial
features is also very important.

This unit includes several role-playing opportunities within the context of a
crime scene. Acting out the roles of police, witnesses, and police artists,
the students will explore the idea of making observations and giving accurate
descriptions.

The 5th graders had their first quiz on this unit last week. They should be
showing you their grades and asking for your signatures soon. Flashcards are
a great way for students to study for French quizzes. For some students, just
the process of writing the words creates a lasting impression. I always
stress the importance of checking over work and using the word bank provided
to verify spelling and accents.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Interested in going to France over Spring Break?
Please let me know if you would like to join the 5th grade trip to France.

Miam! Miam!------
Merci beaucoup to our October French food volunteers —–the Plumettaz family,
Jena Dickson, Brenda Revelle-Wilson, and Carolyn Morton. Everyone enjoyed the
mousse au chocolat. Our next food day will be December 16th. The fifth
graders can look forward to sampling bûche de noël (yule log).

Please let me know if your student has any food allergies, so we can make
accommodations if necessary.
