Ooooooooh la la----
Congratulations to our Mardi Gras t-shirt design winner--Charlie Hicks!
T-shirts will go on sale mid-February for $10. Students love wearing these
shirts at our school Mardi Gras celebration (Feb 28th) and having them as a
souvenir. The best part is that all proceeds go directly to our sister school
in Haiti. The past two years Sarah Smith has raised around $2000 which is
earmarked to fund the lunch program at Ecole St. Croix.
Check out this video that highlights the partnership between our two schools--

Special mention to our other t-shirt finalists--Alondra Ortiz, Kamryn Harley,
and Emma Leonard.

The High Museum is currently showing the Picasso to Warhol exhibit. It is a
fantastic collection of twelve modern masters (Brancusi, Calder, De Chirico,
Duchamp, Johns, Leger, Matisse, Miro, Mondrian, Picasso, Pollack, Warhol).
These paintings are on loan through August from the MOMA. Consider taking
your family to see these famous works (many of them from French or francophile
artists) that are right here in our city. My favorite is the gouache piece by
Henri Matisse. You can get close enough to see the holes left by the
thumbtacks he used to position the cut-outs just right.
Students can earn 5 auto-collants for bringing in their High museum ticket or
sticker from this exhibit.
****Because I love this exhibit so much, I am offering a weekend lunch and
visit to the High museum for my teacher outing listed in the 2012 SRS auction
offerings. Your child and a friend could enjoy French conversation and art
with one of their favorite French teachers--MOI!***

The 4th graders are wrapping up our current unit, "Les Extraterrestres." We
will be having a quiz this Friday (Feb 3rd) focusing on school vocabulary and
we will end the unit with a TPRS presentation in which students act out
stories while telling them. This method reinforces language connections by
involving multiple senses to strengthen language activation.
At the end of February we will start "Les T-shirts." In this theme, students
will learn about winter and summer activities while learning about regions of
Quebec. 4th graders will interview friends to determine their preferred
activities and will create a special t-shirt design for their friend.

The 5th graders are continuing their Visages 3 unit, “Au Restaurant!”. They
have had a great time exploring menu items, ordering food, and creating their
own house salads. They will have a final unit quiz February 13th with an oral
component the days following.
The last bit of February and the first part of March will be spent on our
interactive Echos 3 unit--"Les Inventions Incroyables." This text features
four incredible inventions devised by a wacky scientist and his helpful
assistant. The inventions solve four ordinary problems, but are they
practical? Students will have the opportunity to come up with their own
solutions to everyday problems.

---2012 French trip participants---
I will be doing a mini-unit on Paris and French culture on select Wednesdays
from 2:30-3:30 for students enrolled in the French trip. These sessions are
optional, but will give the kids a good background on the Metro and monuments
before arrival. The next session will be Wed, Feb 15th. I will send out an
email reminder ahead of time.

The 4th and 5th graders will be sampling New Orleans style King Cake at our
Mardi Gras celebration, February 28th.
