Who is Mrs. Samler?

This is my sixth year as the art teacher at Sarah Smith Elementary. I have
been teaching art for fifteen years. This year, I am only teaching at the
Intermediate Campus. Although I will sincerely miss teaching the younger
students, I am very grateful to be in one location this year! I feel that it
will allow my art program to really take off! I am going to have a lot of
student art work displayed around the Intermediate Campus bulletin boards.
In addition, I will be hosting a Fall Art Show this year (just like last
year) where each student in third, fourth, and fifth grades will have a piece
of their art work displayed one night as a special event. The art work
displayed will be created in our classes. We will also have a Spring Art Show
that will be system-wide where all APS schools will display student art
work. Dates for both of these events will be announced in the near future.
In addition, I will also be displaying student work around the community.
Your children will get their art work back no matter where it is displayed. I
feel that having your child's art viewed by others (and themselves) creates a
huge sense of accomplishment and promotes increase of self-esteem. I would
like to have an ample collection of your child's work for this purpose, so
artwork will be returned to your child near the end of the school year in a
portfolio.

I have a Masters in Education from Lesley University,a B.S.E.D. in art
education from the University of Georgia, and I have completed an intensive
one year program in jewelry design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in
NYC.

In addition to teaching, I have owned and operated two art related
businesses, a jewelery company and a fused glass design company. However, my
true passion is teaching children all about art!
My goal is to create a stimulating and challenging environment which
motivates and inspires my students to have a positive experience with art.

Students will be learning many techniques while using a variety of art media.
There will be a focus on the master artists, community art, as well as many
cross-curricular projects with their classroom teachers. The art curriculum
is based on the Georgia Performance Standards to ensure that each student is
taught the appropriate skills for a strong foundation in Visual Arts at the
elementary level.

I believe that art is a vital part of a child's education, and I will strive
to touch every subject area through my classes.
