Name of Unit: “Wants and Needs”

Central Idea: Money is a currency that helps people to satisfy some wants and some needs.

Inquiry Into:

·       Wants versus needs

·       The need for money

·       How we get goods and services

Ways to Help Support the Unit at Home:

v   Please send in pennies for theMake A Wish Penny Drivebeginning February 23.

v   Discuss how a family benefits from individual chores

v   Possible ways to earn money

v   Allow your child to make small purchases

v   Practice counting back change with your child

v   Discuss what items we pay for and what items are free

v   Do you have foreign currency from your travels? We would love for you to bring paper and coin currency from other countries. Items will be returned upon request!

Summative Assessment (to be completed in class):

·       Students will illustrate and write a sentence about an economic need and want. Students will also illustrate and write a sentence about a personal need and want.
