Homework

Mr. Montano's Fifth Grade Homework Policy

My fifth grade policies and procedures for homework are aimed at preparing
our students for the coming year and the transition to middle school. I feel
that encouraging and requiring good organizational skills and holding the
students accountable for their work will instill in them valuable tools for
middle school and for life.

I require the students to use their agendas and to have their agendas with
them at home and at school. Their homework agenda becomes the main tool in
keeping track of all assignments and requirements. I ask that each parent
help me to encourage the use of the agenda and take-home folders and
encourage good organizational skills.

Listed below are my homework requirements for fifth grade:

1. Homework will be posted on the board everyday. STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE
FOR COPYING THE HOMEWORK FOR INTO THEIR AGENDAS daily. PLEASE SIGN OFF ON
YOUR CHILD'S AGENDA AS THEY FINISH THEIR ASSIGNMENTS EACH NIGHT.

2. Homework will be emailed to you nightly as well. (This is a courtesy NOT
A REQUIREMENT and should not take the place of your child writting homework
down in their agendas.)

3. Students who finish their class work may work on homework at school.

4. All homework must be turned in EVERY MORNING BEFORE THE DAY BEGINS.
Homework baskets are located by the door of the classroom and are
clearly labeled "HOMEWORK".

5. All homework must be labeled with the student's name, date, subject,
teacher, page numbers and problem numbers on the right top hand corner of
the first page.

6. Homework is checked for ACCURACY and QUALITY. Homework offenses will be
given for incomplete work or for work of poor quality/pride.

7. A student that does not turn in homework will receive one HOMEWORK
OFFENSE PER ASSIGNMENT. Failure to meet a due date on any work will result
in a DROP IN LETTER GRADE for that assignment for everyday that it is
late...after 3 days it will be scored as a zero!

8. Homework offenses are to be signed by the student and the parent and
returned to the teacher the following day.

9. Three or more homework offenses in a grading period will resullt in an
after school detention on Wednesdays. There will also be a scheduled
conference with the parents and student to discuss the situation.

10. If a student is absent due to illness or family emergencies, missed
assignements for that day may be picked up in the school office after 3:00
pm on the first day of the absence. STUDENTS SHOULD COMPLETE WORK AS ABLE.
When an ill student returns to school, I will work with him/her on make up
dates for tests etc.,

11. If a student is absent because of a trip or family function, then
for the duration of that time their grade will be FROZEN "FR"(not affecting
their grade.)

Thank You,
Mr. Montano
