Week of February 12, 2012
NOTICES:
Remember, this week and next are short weeks due to our Winter Break. No school on Friday, February
17th and Monday, February 20th.
Mr. Sarkassian will be bringing his scientific knowledge to SRS fourth graders during our Astronomy
Unit. Friday, February 10th he did a presentation about the Size and Scale of the Solar System ~ wow!
Friday, February 24th - Star Compositions and Comparisons
Friday, March 2nd - The Moon & It's Phases
Read-A-Thon prizes will be given out during lunch on Thursday, February 16th. Our class did really
well and deserves a huge pat on the back!!!!
As well on Thursday we have Ryan Cameron, the voice of the Atlanta Hawks for 8 seasons ~ a perfect
way to wrap up our Read-A-Thon.
And, we will be attending a Multi-Cultural Assembly.
GOAS has begun. These are the practice CRCT tests that are done at home, on line. Your child was
given a handout with their log in information last Wednesday. The first test is Ecosystems, due
February 12th. They can take the test three times or until they score a 85% or higher.
Join the SRS Multi-Cultural Affairs committee for "A Taste of Sarah Smith" as we celebrate our student
body's rich cultural heritage. Come share food, art, customs and more from around the globe! This
school-wide event will take place on Thursday, March 29th. Details to come.
CLASSROOM:
Math: Fractions, Decimals and Percent.
We have completed Chapter 9 (Decimals) and will quiz on Tuesday, February 14th. Wednesday we will
start reviewing for the Unit Test (Fractions and Decimals). The Unit Test will take place the week of
February 21st.
Reading: Summarizing. Connotation and Denotation.
Language Arts: Onomatopoeia and Simile. Adjectives: proper and common.
Writing: We wrote limericks last week and will return to persuasive writing this week. Along with
identifying three main arguments and supporting details, students identify effective introductory and
powerful conclusion paragraphs.
Science: Astronomy, and IB unit on How the World Works, and Beyond.
