Announcements!

~Congrats to all! You helped raise $2,505.64 for the Ronald McDonald House of
Buckhead. This is the most we have raised since our annual campaign began.
Thank you again for all your effort and support!

~We are half-way to second grade! That means that we will be working harder
upon our return to school. We are older, smarter and have a strong work ethic
already. So, enjoy your last few days of the break, get a good nights sleep
on Tuesday and come to school prepared to do your best Wednesday morning!

~Please try to be at school by 7:50 each day.

~We will begin the new year by assessing our reading levels using the Star
Literacy Program as well as individual DRA assessments. I hope you all
continued to read over the break. I know that you did and hopefully the
assessments will show it!

~We will ring in the new year learning about the Arctic and Antarctic regions
of the world. There is so much to discover about these vast places. I can't
wait to begin!

~We will not have small groups the week we return but will continue the rest
of the month. Be sure to volunteer as time will run out soon. Small groups
stop after spring break so be sure to secure your volunteer spot through
March!

~Our class has gained many skills through the writing experience. Now that we
are familiar with writing complete sentences mostly on our own, we will begin
writing different types such as narratives, persuasive and informational
pieces. We will begin the year with an informational piece about a polar
animal. My expectations are higher as I know our children can achieve these
goals.

~We will be reviewing the vowel valley sounds upon our return. Since we only
have three days, we will begin a new sound the following week. That sound
is /ou/ as in ouch and the /ow/ as in cow. The spelling is similar to that
of /au, aw/ and /oi, oy/. We spell with /ou/ at the beginning and middle of a
one syllable word and use /ow/ at the end.

~The students will take a mid-term progress test on units 1-5 in math. This
will help us to identify skills that are mastered and those that still need
some assistance to master. We will begin Unit 6 in math as well.

~Students, answer the following question for three table points! Be sure to
whisper the answer in my ear in the morning!

Where is the arctic region located?
                  a. North Pole
                  b. South Pole
                  c. both places
