FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
What can we do to celebrate birthdays? You are welcome to send in treats (usually cupcakes, cookie cake, or cookies)for birthdays in the morning with your child. We will eat them after recess and sing "Happy Birthday." We just ask that you please let your child's teacher know because some students have allergies and we will need to plan ahead. Please remember to send in napkins and paper plates if needed. Students are allowed to have an out of uniform day on their birthday. If the birthday falls on a weekend, the out of uniform day can be on the following Monday. First grade can buy ice cream on Wednesdays. Please put exactly 50 cents in a baggie or envelope with your child's name. How can we study for our grammar tests? On our weekly newsletter under "grammar" we list the topic we will be working on for the week. Please work with your child a little every night focusing on that topic. For example; with word order in sentences. You can unscramble a sentence and have your child write that sentence or tell you that sentence the correct way. We also send home workbook pages that we have worked on as a class throughout the week. Please check to see how your child did and review it with them. This will help prepare them for the test. What is sentence dictation and where will I find my child's grade? Every Friday the students will be given a sentence dictation section as part of their spelling grade. The teacher will say a sentence and the student will write what they hear. These sentences will contain words they know either from previous stories or the story they are being tested on that particular week. You will find the sentences on the same paper as the spelling words (either on the front or back of the paper). Please check and review it with your child. Also, please note that each teacher may vary in the way they grade the test, so if you have specific questions about your child's grade please check with the teacher. What is the procedure on library and AR books? Your child can check out two library books (as long as they do not have any they have not turned in) on the day their class goes to the library. When they check out books they need to pick out books on their level. We ask that your child bring their library books to school everyday, whether or not they are finished with them. We are asking them to do this so that they have something to read if they finish their work early. If they are not done with their book and want to take it back home, they may do so. Please make sure that your child is reading their AR book at home at least once with an adult. This is to ensure that your child is ready to take the test when and if they decide to do so. Remember that AR does not count toward their reading grade and is not required, but we have seen a high correlation between children who utilize the AR program and reading achievement. |
