What will I do in Art?

Every grade level will partake in different activities. At the
6th grade level, students will develop a foundation for art, and
that gradually builds as they go through 7th and 8th grade. By
their last year at East Cobb, the students will have a concrete
knowledge of art techniques, they will be proficient in art-
related vocabulary, and they will have expertise in how to
use and manipulate various art materials and tools to create art.
As mentioned in the "DBAE" section of this website, Art
Education is an expansive program with many different facets.
During the 9 1/2 week quarter, I will teach disciplined-based Art
Education, which consists of: Art Criticism, Art History,
Aesthetics, and Art Making.
These 4 points are the "backbone" of our experiences in
drawing, painting, printmaking, clay and fiber lessons. You will
also learn about the Elements and Principles of Design, which
carry through in all of our lessons.

Will I get dirty in Art?

That depends! We run a very organized Art studio that we all work
together to keep clean. When we paint, do clay, and print, you
will wear a heavy-duty apron. We try to avoid accidents at all
times---when students walk around the room, they exercise extreme
caution when others are working or retrieving paint, etc. If you
treat the art room, materials, and those around you with care and
respect, you will maintain cleanliness.
Hand-washing is always something you will have to do after you
have worked with art materials, and you can do that within the
Art room. Also, you will get to know the magic word while working
in Mrs. Lockman's room:
"INCOMING!"

Does everyone do the same things in the school?

No. 6th, 7th, and 8th grades have 3 different sets of Art
curriculum goals and standards. For instance, even though each
grade level may all be doing painting, each grade level will have
a different project. At the 8th grade level, art lessons are more
advanced than they are in the previous grade levels.

Will I get my artwork back after I finish it?

Absolutely! You may have to wait a few weeks for certain pieces
to get back to you, as I will hang art installations throughout
East Cobb Middle School. I love to show-off the talent from my
classes, so exhibits are always going up!
I also like to take digital photos of art for my own library.

When you get your artwork back, I encourage you to show your
family and friends what you have created.

What if I am not good at drawing? Will you take points off for that?

NO! You don't have to be a "Picasso" to get an A in my class. As long as you
try your best, complete the project in full, and make sure you've shown that
you understand the concepts taught, you are going to be successful!
Ms. Lockman is always available to help you!
