Thanks so much for playing the math game every evening with your child. It
has only been one week and I have seen great improvements in their math
computation done in class. Next week there will be a new game but the same
sign off sheet will be used. :-)
New:
Our problem solving folders went home last night and they are due back to
school tomorrow. The children are to follow the "Working Backwards" strategy
to complete the problem. They are to use the UNRAAVEL strategy which is
located on the front of their problem solving folder to assist them. After
your child has completed all parts of their problem they need to go over and
explain to you the process they went through in order to solve their
problem. "Talking it Out" is another strategy that improves their
comprehension of what they are doing. If a child can explain both orally and
in written expression they have a better understanding of the concept. Please
sign the page that your child completed. It should be the problem with "Ann"
and her buying a hotdog and a drink. Thanks so much.
Class Needs
* Clorox Clean-Up Wipes
* Electric Pencil Sharpener
* Extra Snacks for the snack bin
Reminders:
*** Please help your child to remember to wear to bring gym shoes on P.E.
days. They are unable to participate in gym class if they do not have the
proper shoe attire.
** Reading logs are due Monday morning. Please look over your child's reading
summary on Sunday nights prior to signing their reading log. Each child
should be writing 3 good sentences summarizing what they have read each
evening. They should also be filling out all the information needed for each
day. Since we have studied elapsed time, I have asked the children to write
their minutes read each evening to the left of the column. We have started
our competition within our room of minutes read each week. The minutes will
be combined together each week and at the end of the quarter we will have
some overall super readers. Each week we will have our " Super Reader" for
the week listed in our newsletter in addition to the child with the most
improvement of their minutes read. :-) Reading minutes are being totaled each
week.
This week our Rockin' Reader is Katie T. Way to go Katie! Our most improved
reader is Natasha! Way to get those minutes going!!!!!! I can't wait to see
who will be in the lead next week.

Next week at a glance:
Reading:E.Q.: How can I identify cause and effect? We will be reading picture
books that have cause and effect situations in addition to real life
situations. How can I make judgements and infer to help me comprehend text?
We will also be discussing questioning as we are reading, and how this
strategy helps us as a great reader.
Writing:E.Q.: How do I write a response to literature? We will focus this
week on how we can organize our response to literature. We read Amanda Bean's
Amazing Dream. The students will be working on their own response to
literature going from organization to rough draft (edit/revise).
English:How can I identify a preposition? How can I use plural nouns
correctly? The children will complete their plural noun books. These books
should always be kept in the sleeve in their reading section of their binder.
Once finished it will become a resource for the students to use throughout
the year.
Spelling: Unit 8 test on Tuesday. Homophones.
Math:E.Q.: How do I identify strategies to help me multiply? How can I
identify strategies to help me divide? This week we read Amanda Bean's
Amazing Dream and made our own arrays that went along with the story. They
are displayed on the wall outside our classroom. We discussed that X means "
groups of" and our vocabulary was factor, product, array, repeated addition.
We will continue with multiplication and begin division next week. Taking a
whole and dividing it into equal parts.
Social Studies:How can I identify the three branches of local, state, and
