PARENT NEWS:
Tuesday the students will be sharing Valentines with each other. This is an
optional activity for the students. Each student should bring a container to
hold the valentines they receive.

Vaughan Elementary Mission Statement
Our mission at Vaughan Elementary School is to work as a community to meet
the diverse learning needs of students in order to prepare them for success
in a global economy.
Reminders:
***Items to be signed each evening- agenda and behavior sheet.
***Thursday Folder gets signed every Thursday and returned to school on
Friday.
*** Please help your child to remember to wear or to bring gym shoes on P.E.
days. They need to wear their gym shoes to make sure they are safe while
participating in P.E. activities. Thanks for you help! :-)
**Reading Logs:
** Minutes: 105 minutes each week. Each child will also be responsible to
turn in his or her reading log every Monday morning. The written portion of
the reading log is to be completed in pencil by your child. No parent
handwriting should be on the log other than a parent signature at the end of
the week. The log should be completed neatly and completely by your child.
They should be proud of all work that they turn in this school year.
Starting this upcoming week students will be completing all portions of their
reading log in addition to reading their 105 minute minimum.

Next week at a glance:
Reading:E.Q.:How can I determine fact from opinion? Students will be using
their National Geographic for Kids to complete guided reading activities. We
will also be wrapping up our non-fictional conventions booklets. Students
will also be studying words with multiple meanings.
Writing:E.Q.:How can I write to inform? We will continue with our study of
informational text by reviewing our model piece of work on "Yams." This week
we will continue our own pieces of informational writing over "Honeybees."
Grammar: E.Q.:How can I identify the six parts of speech studied? How can I
identify helping verbs and understand their purpose? Students will be
introduced to helping verbs and will begin to classify/locate them in
sentences.
Spelling: er,ir,air,ear words. If no specific homework is given in spelling,
students should be practicing words nightly with example activities in the
spelling sleeve in their binder. Quiz on Wednesday.
Handwriting: Nightly cursive handwriting pages will be sent home. Please
encourage your child to slow down, sit with correct posture, and do their
best on each sheet.
Math:E.Q.: How can I understand measurement? Students will measure to the
closest 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch, and inch. We will continue with standard forms of
measurement and begin our study of metric measurement.
Social Studies: E.Q.: How can I identify the diligence and loyalty of
Frederick D. Roosevelt?
Science: E.Q.: How can I identify the regions of Georgia and what
characteristics, plants and animals of each region.
Look for parent information sheet on habitats project to come home on
Tuesday. Please sign and return to school. The sheet will be returned to each
student and it has been checked for parent signatures.
