Questions
about The Accelerated Reading Program:
1. What
is Accelerated Reading Program? This is a reading program where students
are able to check out books from the school library, read them, and then take
a comprehension quiz on what they have read. The program allows students to
earn AR points for each quiz successfully completed. At the end of the school
year the points are added up for prizes.
2. How
does my child begin this program? I have set a goal for each student to
read 30 or more high frequency words in one minute (Standard: ELAKR4-a). When
the student has reached this goal, he/she earns the right to begin the
Accelerated Reading Program.
3. What
does the Accelerated Reading Program include? Once your child has
successfully completed the 30 high frequency words per minute, you will
recieve a notice at home and a document to sign for responsiblity of books
checked out of the library. Your child will not be allowed to check out books
if the document is not signed and returned to school.
4. How
is the reading level determined for my child? Your child will take a STAR
test to determine the reading level he/she is reading on. The test is given on
the computer and is completed independently. There will be no assistance given
by the teacher. The STAR results will determine what level books your child
will be checking out of the library.
5. Will
I know my child's results from the AR tests? Each reporting period (Report
card time), your child will have a copy of the books and test results he/she
has done at that point.
6. What
are the advantages to the Accelerated Reading Program? It is a great way
to begin your child's love for reading. Plus, they get to go to the library
all by theirself and check out books!
Additional Goals &
Incentives
After meeting the 2008-2009 class,
additional goals and incentives will be used. The goals are based on Standards
that the class may have difficulty with during assessments. The class and the
teachers will work together to determine a Standard that they see might be a
great goal for the class.
*Please be sure to check back often to see
what additional goals will be added for the 2008-2009 class.
Personal Goals
The following are steps used to determine
the personal goals set by the students.
1. The
students have a Student Portfolio that they keep completed projects in. The
documents placed in the Portolio are ones that the students choose throughout
the year.
2. In
the first few weeks of school, each student has a "mini-meeting" with the
teacher to discuss and determine personal goals that the student wants to work
on during the school year.
3.
The teacher encourages the students to look at the pre-assessments given in
the first few weeks of school, and choose one of the Standards they think they
are having a difficult time with.
4. The
student will draw and write about the goal(s) he/she wants to work on and meet
before the end of the year. This is placed in the Student Portfolio.
5. Once
personal goal(s) are met, the teacher encourages the student to create a new
personal goal.
