Rock n' Roll News
- WOOHOO!!! We won the IXL Marathon for the ENTIRE SCHOOL! What a bunch of mathematicians!!! I'm so proud of the kids and all their hard work!
- In an effort to save trees I did not copy the letter about the new spelling program but here is a run down: Your child was given a pretest of 200 high frequency words (using Teacher's College High Frequency Word List). The words your child missed will be their spelling words each week until he/she spells them correctly, consistently. If students correctly spell all the words they will choose words from a challenging high frequency word list. Seeing as each child will have a different list, students will conduct buddy assessments on Fridays. Your child will be expected to spell these words correctly not only on the test but also in their writing. Spelling homework will remain as options from the spelling menu. I will upload the full letter on the class documents page.
- I also did not attach a signature sheet on the CRCT packet. Please just sign on the front sheet and write any concerns there as well. We will continue this way.
- Please encourage your child to participate in the Heroes Essay Contest sponsored by PTA. Directions were in the PTA e-news, but please contact me if you would like a copy of directions, the entry form, or more information.
- Information about picture day came home today. If you want class pictures they must be pre-ordered and pre-paid with the form that came home today. All students will still have their individual picture made and will receive a packet to order those from.

If there is something we're doing in class that I know I'll need someone for I'll email the group to see who can come. If you are interested sign up in the hallway before or after you conference.

- Wednesday- Don’t Let Drugs Turn You Inside Out! Wear something inside out.
- Thursday- We Don’t Mix With Drugs! *Our class won’t be participating this day since we are going on a field trip. Kids should wear their class t-shirts on the trip with comfortable pants and easy walking shoes.
- Friday- Team Up Against Drugs! Wear a team shirt or jersey.
- The kids are really enjoying getting their hands dirty while learning about soil. We’ll move into the weathering and erosion of soil and rocks this week. A review sheet will be sent home for homework Wednesday night and will be due on Friday. We will go over the answers, and kids will bring it back home to study over the weekend.

- I apologize for the mixup with the last book order. Something went wrong with Scholastic's website the day I ordered, but I didn't receive any notice. It wasn't until a week later when our books hadn't arrived that I contacted them and found out our order was never received! This time I'm only leaving the order open until Friday. I will submit the order Friday afternoon, and the books should be here by October 31st at the latest.

Rock n' Roll News:
- Please return the yellow conference letter your child brought home in his/her Monday folder as soon as possible.
- Please pull out your photos and help your child pick one (or two) pictures to help focus in on our final narrative writing piece of the quarter!!! Your child will use this photo to help him/her branistorm and create an organized writing piece telling a story about the event taking place in the picture. The picture does need to be about something he/she was a part of and not a huge event (like an entire trip) but a small memorable event (one thing he/she did on the trip). In order to have a good topic for writing we need to have several well developed ideas related to the topic. (The writing will be done at school.) Please have the picture sent in by WEDNESDAY!
- Do you have a creek in your neighborhood? If so, we need your help! We're about to begin our soil unit and need samples of creek water. Please let me know if you can send in a few bottles of creek water.
- How much tv does your child watch? Today he/she brought home a week-long homework assignment. Each night the students need to fill in the graph for how much tv they've watched. This is due a week from today. (Monday the 17th)
- I hope I'll see you at the Fall Festival on Friday the 21st. Every year the Foundation puts together a teacher auction. This year I'm auctioning off two events. The first event is a trip to Cagle's Dairy Farm to go through the corn maze and go on the hayride with me. (This will need to be done before the fall festivities close on November 13.) The second event is hiking up Kennesaw Mountain with me. I'm looking forward to both events!
- We have room for one more chaperone for our field trip to the Tellus Museum. Please let me know ASAP if you'd like to go.
Rock n’ Roll Reminders: - No spelling words this week due to testing.
- Please return the Tellus Museum permission slip and money for the field trip by Friday.

- October 7- Elapsed Time Test
- October 7- Soldier Letters Due
- October 10-14- ITBS Testing
- October 17-21- Red Ribbon Week
- October 21- Fall Festival
Rock n' Roll News:
- On Friday our class wrote letters of gratitude to soldiers! East Side is participating in the Bert Show's Big Thank You. The radio station is trying to get a letter to all the military members who will be stationed or deployed outside of the United States on Thanksgiving Day. I explained to the students that they may write more letters at home and parents and/or siblings may write letters also. All letters are due Friday. For every letter a child turns in, I will give him/her a homework pass to use later. What a rewarding family activity!
- Testing begins this week! On Wednesday we will start the CogAT, Cognitive Abilities Test, which assesses students’ abilities in reasoning and problem solving using verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal (spatial) symbols. This will only take about 30 minutes a day and will be done first thing in the morning.
Next week the kids will take the ITBS, Iowa Test of Basic Skills,
which assesses students knowledge in the major content areas. This test
lasts about an hour each day.
You can help your child by making sure they go to bed early
every night, feeding them a healthy breakfast, and having them here on
time. These are not tests your child study for nor is it anything your child
needs to stress over. We will have normal homework this week but will not
have spelling words next week.
- We will be having two normal class tests this week- Rocks and Minerals on Thursday and Elapsed Time on Friday. A study guide will come home tomorrow for science along with their notebooks to study. An elapsed time study guide will not be given. The students have done wonderful with this concept. They are required to be able to determine the elapsed time to the full and half hour at this point in the year.
- Last week we logged on to IXL for the first time! Tomorrow your student will bring home (along with several others papers that didn't make it into Monday folders today) a sheet with their login information. This site is great for practicing math skills!

Rock n' Roll News:
- Please help your child study for the government test tomorrow. They have their study guide and their Social Studies notebook to help them review. For extra review the children can play the Government Jeopardy game located on the Social Studies, Science, and Healthy Rocks page here on my website.
- A letter came home attached to a timed math fact test today if your child has not mastered their addition and/or subtraction facts. Please be sure to read the letter because it is VERY important we get these students to where they need to be.
- We are in need of some old crayons for an upcoming project. If you have any old crayons that are broken, small, or just not being used, please send them in by THURSDAY.
- Lice is going around the school. We are trying to be preventative in our room by putting backpacks in garbage bags. I’ve been wearing my hair in a ponytail and recommend girls do the same. Lice does not like hair with product in it, so spraying with hairspray can also keep them away!
- The kids had a ball at the Boosterthon Fun Run! I decided to run with them this year, and they wore me out! We ended up reaching $79/lap and earned the movie day reward. We will watch half of a movie on Thursday and finish it up Friday afternoon. If the class brings in all the pledged money, we will have Dress Like a Rock Star Day. I’ll keep you updated on that!

Rock n’ Roll Reminders:
· Please be sure and return the Boosterthon envelope your child brought home on Friday or pay the amount online.
· I’ve received a few sports schedules and am planning the days I’ll be cheering for the little athletes. If your child would like for me to attend one of his/her events, please get a schedule to me.

9/6/11 Miss Casey's Weekly Rockin' Report
Important Dates on our Tour:
·September 6- Boosterthon Begins
·September 10- East Cobber Parade and Festival
·September 15- Boosterthon Fun Run
Rock n' Roll News: *Disclaimer- sorry for the crazy colors in this newsflash. The Teacher Web site is very strange sometimes!
·We had a blast at our Olympics! I hope your child told you all about it!
·We had a great week last week after some very talkative two weeks! I have implemented a behavior management guitar. Students start the day on Let’s Rock and Roll and can move up or down depending on their behavior. They have one warning before consequences are set. Consequences are still logical but this helps students who visually need to see they’ve already had a reminder.
·You should find a reading log in your child’s homework folder today. Please leave it in there. Your child is responsible for recording reading every night. This is the same log we are using in class so it should be easy for the students to fill out. You may initial on the side if you’d like, but it is not a requirement.
·Spelling will start next week.
·We kicked off our government unit today by watching Miss Casey perform in her first music video! Ask your child about my skills..or lack thereof. : )
·Somehow three of our small whiteboards have disappeared. If you’re looking for something to donate to our room, we are in need of those!
·We had a pep rally today to start the Boosterthon fun! The Boosterthon Fun Run program involves all students in a fun, team building, fitness event while helping our school raise funds. Last year was a huge success! The central focus of this year’s character program; Epic Adventure, is all about TEAMWORK. Whether it’s a sports team, a family, or a class, we’re all on teams. The island inspired EPIC ADVENTURE theme and The Booster Team will take students on a fun-filled journey teaching them the importance of teamwork and how to be a great team.
Through the Boosterthon, I receive 10% of what our class raises to help go towards supplies for our classroom. On top of that, our entire school is raising support to go toward student enrichment programs, updated technology and teacher development.
Here’s how you can help:
1. LOG-ON to your student’s website at www.FunRun.com using your student’s pledge pack and access code. Log on each night to watch the Epic Adventure action videos, get information and enter pledge information.
1. GET PLEDGES by connecting your student with 10 sponsors. This year there’s an ONLINE PLEDGE PAY system. Be sure to capture and record the e-mail address of each sponsor, as they will have an easy opportunity to pay for your student’s pledge by credit card at the end of the program.
2. COME TO THE BOOSTERTHON FUN RUN NEXT WEEK! Remember, students will be running 25-35 laps and we would love to have lots of support for our team!
For Fun Run times and a video message, go to http://boosterthoninfo.com/eastsidetigers
Thank you for supporting our classroom and our school!

- September 2- Greece Test
- September 2- Class Olympics
- September 5- Labor Day, No School
- September 6- Boosterthon Begins
- September 15- Boosterthon Fun Run
Rock n' Roll News:
- The students have enjoyed learning about the ancient Olympics. On Friday we will bring our Greece unit to an end with our own class Olympics! The students will participate in some of the original Olympic events- discus, javelin, long jump, foot race, and the chariot race. You are welcome to join us on Friday. Unfortunately due to the parking lot construction and the different grade levels’ creative recess areas, I’m still working out an available space. It is tentatively scheduled for 11:00 in the bus lanes. I will send out a definite time/location tomorrow.
- I will need a few volunteers to help me set up around 10:30 and some during the games to retrieve discuses and javelins. Please let me know if you’d be available to do so.
- I am also in need of some javelins. I’ve found pool noodles work great. If you have any of the smaller (half size) pool noodles and would be willing to let us borrow them, please let me know.
- We were rocking and rolling today while learning the Greek alphabet. Ask your child to sing it for you!
- The Greece test will also be on Friday. This test will cover the three areas on which ancient Greece influenced the United States. Students will need to know how the ancient Greek Olympic molded our current Olympics, how Greek architecture influenced current buildings in the United States, and how ancient Greek democracy is similar and different to our democracy. A study guide will be coming home tomorrow for students to complete as homework. They will also bring their social studies notebook home to aid them in completing the study guide. Both items should return to school on Wednesday. We will check the study guide together, and it will come back home for studying Wednesday and Thursday night.
- Thanks for helping your child study for his/her place value test. The kids did great!
Rock n’ Roll Reminders:
· Please send in a pack of modeling clay for your student to use in creating Greek columns.

*I have to give a special thank you to Cole. Last week I found one of our classroom books on the floor with all the pages torn out. It was clear it had been an accident with someone stepping on it. We had already had a lesson on taking care of books, so I made a big deal out of how we have to treat our books kindly or this would happen to all of them. Today Cole brought me a new Ginger Jumps (the book that lost all the pages). I thought that was so sweet of him to think to bring me a new one! I’m so lucky to have students with such thoughtful hearts!
Important Information!!!
*Please send in a pack of modeling clay with your child by Tuesday. We will be using it to build replicas of Greek columns.
*We will have a test over place value and forms of numbers on Monday. Students should know the definitions of place, value, standard form, expanded form, and word form. They should be able to tell the place and value of a number as well as write numbers (up to the ten thousands place) in all forms. Students will be bringing home their math notebooks tomorrow to use as a study guide. PLEASE MAKE SURE THESE ARE RETURNED TO SCHOOL ON MONDAY!

Rock n' Roll News:
- We had the best first week of school! I know this is the most amazing third grade class ever! I’m really looking forward to all the learning and excitement that will take place in our room this year!
- Today we started our unit on ancient Greece. Miss Casey surprised the kids by wearing a toga and having them join her in the hallway with the rest of third grade for the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. We passed the Olympic torch and said the oath! Ask your child about this fun event. Be on the lookout for information regarding our classroom Olympics that will be coming soon!
- Take a look at how your child did on the addition and subtraction timed tests. They had one minute to answer 40 questions, and the goal was to get all 40 correct. Monday night’s homework is to practice math facts because many students need a lot of practice! (They should also read 20 minutes for homework but note that reading logs have not come home.)
- Please send in an old (clean) sock for your child to use a dry erase board eraser.
Rock n’ Roll Reminders:
· Please remember to return all Cobb County papers that went home at Meet and Greet, the t-shirt order form, and picture money.
· Please be sure and write your child back in his/her journal home each weekend. I had several children who didn’t have a letter from a parent today.
· Please be sure to remove all papers from Monday folders, sign, and return only the folder tomorrow.
· Class donations may be sent in to school, and I will make sure Ashlyn’s mom receives them.
