HISTORY OF KAUAI HIGH SCHOOL
On April 30, 1913, The Governor of the Territory of Hawai'i signed into
law Act 160 to establish "the Kauai High School." The courthouse was
located on a four-acre parcel atop a hill often referred to as "Ke Kuhiau",
which translates as "high point." The area was once the site of "Ke
Kuhiau", on of three heiaus located near Kalapaki Bay. On September 14,
1914, Kauai High School opened its doors in the renovated courthouse as the
fifth high school of the Territory of Hawai'i and the first high school on
the island of Kaua'i.

VISION FOR KAUAI HIGH SCHOOL
Our students will be prepared for the challenges of their future by becoming
LITERATE, RESPONSIBLE, and CONTRIBUTING members of society.
PHILOSOPHY
Kauai High School believes that schools are established for students as a
place to develop academically, aesthetically, physically & socially. Thus,
we believe:

SCHOOL LUNCH
School lunches are obtained through a bar code on a student's school
ID. A deposit of monies into a student's account is done with the Lunch
Clerk before school & during morning recess in the main office. No money
will be accepted at the Cafeteria. Students are required to have money into
their account before any meal is provided. There are three meals to choose
from: breakfast, wiki, and lunch. Ala carte items include water, juice &
milk.
Students need to use their own IDs to purchase meals in the Cafeteria.
IDs that are misused will be confiscated and turned into administration.
Consequences will follow.
STUDENT ID CARDS
1. ID cards are to be worn at all times, from the moment a student comes on
campus in the morning until he/she leaves when school is over. They are to
be worn at all school-sponsored activities on and off campus.
2. ID cards are to be used to identify the student, to access a student's
lunch account, to enter school-sponsored events (Assemblies, Winterball,
Prom, Graduation, Talent Show, etc.) and to borrow books.
3. ID cards are to be worn on the front of the body in the chest area above
the waist. They are to be worn so that they are easily visible to anyone at
all times.
4. ID cards may NOT be swapped, switched, or exchanged at any time and for
any reason.
5. They may also NOT be altered, broken, cracked, defaced, decorated in any
way, or written on.
6. ID cards that are altered, broken, cracked, defaced, decorated, or
written on will cause the student to be assessed a $5.00 financial
obligation. New ID cards are given a clip.
7. To obtain a replacement ID card, the student needs to report to P-26
(SAC Office) before school, during morning and lunch recesses, or after
school, and have $5.00.
8. ID cards for new students require a digital picture being taken and a
number for Cafeteria food.
9. ID cards that are misused by students (sharing, stolen) will be
confiscated and turned into administration. Consequences will follow.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Kauai High follows the State of Hawaii DOE Attendance Policy. STUDENTS
HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR SUBMITTING ABSENCE NOTES UPON THEIR RETURN TO
SCHOOL WHEN ABSENT. STUDENTS WHO MISS SCHOOL OR CLASSES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR
REQUESTING MAKE-UP WORK UPON RETURN. Quarter/term grades should reflect
make-up work completed within that quarter/term. For a student who is
truant, F's and O's may be given for work that is missed by the student.
When students are suspended from one to ten days (except as stipulated in
Chapter 19), teachers are required to provide substitute educational
activities or make-up work. Automatic F's or O's SHALL NOT BE GIVEN to a)
assignments that students are not allowed to make up and b) mere physical
absence from class. Chronic absenteeism may result in a truancy charge and
referral to Family Court.
AUTHORIZED SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Students will not be considered absent if they are participating in
authorized school activities including, but not limited to: field trips,
athletic events, student government meetings, rehearsals or performances.
Students will not be considered absent if they are meeting with a
counselor or an administrator or are receiving special services.
RATIONALE
In order for the students at Kauai High School to receive the maximum
benefit of their education, they must be in the classroom on a regular and
consistent basis. Regular attendance is the responsibility of the student
and his/her parents. By attending school regularly, students will develop
the habits and attitudes necessary to be responsible and contributing
members of the community.
OFF CAMPUS PASSES
Students needing an off campus pass MUST present a written parental
request to personnel in the main office or health room between the hours
7:00 - 8:15 A.M. REQUEST MUST BE SIGNED BY THE PARENT/GUARDIAN & MUST
INCLUDE THE STUDENT'S NAME, HOME TELEPHONE NUMBER, REASON THE PASS IS NEEDED,
AND THE TIME THE STUDENT IS TO BE DISMISSED FROM AND/OR RETURNED TO SCHOOL.
HALL PASS
Students need to use their planners for hall passes signed by the
teacher. Each student will be issued one at the beginning of the school
year. Planners are also used like an organizer to jot down upcoming class
or school activities. The cost for a lost planner is $5.00 and students
need to go to P-26 for the replacement. The school is not liable for any
damage to the student planner or items contained within it.
EMERGENCY CARDS
It is mandatory that Emergency Cards are to be filled out and turned in
to the Nurses Office at the beginning of every new scool year.
VISITORS ON CAMPUS
All visitors are to report directly to the main office. All visitors,
including guest speakers MUST have a VISITOR'S PASS. All teachers with
guest speakers MUST obtain permission from the school's Administration prior
to their visit. No relatives or friends of students are to visit during
school hours. The visitor's parking area is located in front of "U"
Building or at the 1 hour parking along Lala Road.
DRESS CODE
1. All students MUST WEAR Kauai High School approved school wear. Any
student not wearing school wear will be given a loaner or an economy shirt
and assessed an obligation. Consequences may also follow.
2. Drug paraphanelia, gang symbols, obscene words, nude, sexually
harassing, or sexually explicit figures are NOT ALLOWED anywhere on ANY
clothing article.
3. Student may NOT expose any part of their midriff.
4. Undergarments may NOT be exposed at any time.
5. Student's bottoms (shorts, skirts, dress hems) have to be longer than
the length of their arms extended down to their sides with their hands
clenched in a fist.
6. Questionable attire will be determined whether approparite or
inappropriate by the Adiministration and/or school officials.
Consequences for continued non-compliance may result in the following:
a. 1st offense will be three (3) days detention.
b. 2nd offense will be an additional five (5) days detention
c. 3rd offense will be an immeidate suspension from school.
FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS
Any student that has a financial or detention obligation to the school
(administrative, athletic, band, library, lunch, school wear, textbook,
vandallism, etc.) MUST BE CLEARED IN TOTAL before participating in any
school-sponsored activity such as clubs, athletics, etc. A student's school
record or transcript MAY BE WITHHELD for non-payment of any financial
obligation as well as school discipline.
The Department of Education shall assess and collect a service charge
of $25.00 for any dishonored (bad) check in accordance with Chapter 40-35.5
H.R.S.
PROHIBITED BEHAVIOR
Students are expected to obey all Hawai'i State Laws and DOE Rules.
Chapter 19 DOE Policies & Procedures are followed in disciplining students.
1. CLASS "A" OFFENSES: Unlawful conduct (Police Report Mandatory) assault;
burglary; dangerous weapons or instruments, possession of or use of
firearms; extortion; possession, use or sale of illicit substances; murder;
property damage; robbery; sexual offenses; terroristic threatening.
2. Class "B" Offenses: Unlawful conduct (Policy Reprot Mandatory)
Disorderly conduct; rendering of false alarm; gambling; harassment; theft,
trespassing.
3. Class "C" Offenses Prohibited by DOE Rules: Class cutting,
insubordination; leaving campus without permission; smoking, use of tobacco
substances; truancy.
4. Class "D" Offenses School Prohibited: Contraband, possession or use of
any; any other conduct as may be prescribed & prohibited by school rules.
PROHIBITED ITEMS:
1. Any form of tobacco, drugs, or alcohol.
2. Any form of material and/or items that may be used in a dangerous manner
(knives, firecrackers, fireworks, any explosive substances, etc.)
3. Audio equiment (radio, CD or DVD players, I-Pods, CD's, DVD's,
cassettes, MP3's).
4. Balloons, water balloons, water guns, shaving or whipped cream.
STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT
FREEDOM FROM FEAR: Students are expected to contribute to a safe school
environment free from fear. Acts of violence, contraband, and weapons are
never acceptable.
PUNCTUALITY: Students are expected to be on time for school and classes.
REGULAR ATTEANDANCE: Students are expected to attend school regularly and
to attend all classes.
RESPECT FOR AUTHORITY: Students are expected to comply with all school
rules and obey all laws. Students are expected to respond in a respectful
manner to all adults while under the jurisdiction of the school and while
participating in school-sponsored activities.
RESPECT FOR PROPERTY: Students are expected to treat all property belonging
to the school and others with care.
RESPECT FOR SELF AND OTHERS: Students are expected to be honest, behave
with dignity, and treat others with respect and courtesy. Behavior of the
individual should not interfere with the rights of others. This includes
the use of approparite language, actions and attire. Students are expected
not to harass others verbally and physically. Students are expected to come
to school free from the influence of alcohol, drugs, or tobacco products.
Students are expected not to use or possess such substances.
WORK HABITS: Students are expected to be prepared for and to participate in
each class to meet performance standards; to have the necessary materials;
to complete class work and homework accurately and on time; and to prepare
for examinations, quizzes, and tests.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
All students must earn 24 credits for a diploma.
The BOE Recognition Diploma is awarded to students with grade point averages
of 3.0 and above who successfully complete additional required coursework.
To students who meet the requirements, the following BOE recognition diploma
is awarded:
Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.0 to 3.5
Magna Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.5 to 3.8
Summa Cum Laude with GPA of 3.8+
Valedictorian: 4.0 and higher (cumulative)
The High School Diploma shall be issued to students who have met all
graduation requirements and have cleared all financial obligations.
A Cerfiticate of Completion of an individually prescribed program shall be
issued to specifically indentified, disabled students who complete all the
requirements set by the program.
PROMOTION
Students must earn the following minimum credits to be promoted to:
Grade 10: 5 credits
Grade 11: 11 credits
Grade 12: 17 credits
KHS PRINCIPAL'S LIST/HONOR ROLL
A student at Kauai High School is on the Principal's List if he/she
has a GPA of 4.0 or better without any D's, F's, I's, U's or K's. A
student is on the Honor Roll if he/she has a GPA of 3.5-4.0 without any D's
F's I's, U's.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT FOR PARTICIPATION IN CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:
The BOE is committed to the promotion of high academic achievement.
Students participating in co-curricular student activities must have at
least an overall 2.0 GPA and be passing in all courses required for
graduation.
PARTICIPATION GUIDELINES
1. In the grading period preceding the activity, a student must have passed
all required graduation courses and have at least an overall 2.0 GPA
2. The grades used to determine the GPA for eligibility to participate in
co-curricular student activities shall be year, semester, and/or quarter
grades depending on their availability.
3. The releveant GPA is computed or based on all courses in which a student
is enrolled, not just those required for graduation.
4. The GPA shall be computed on the grading scales as follows:

5. All incoming 9th graders; new, out-of-state, or out-of-country transfer
students; and new transfer students from Hawai'i private schools are
eligible to participate during the first quarter if all transcripts are in
and GPA is sufficient (2.0 or higher).

Student Government consists of Student Body Officers,
Kauai District Representatives, Class Officers, Representatives from the
social studies classes.
PTP (PERSONAL TRANSITION PLAN) & SENIOR PROJECT
Implemented as a required .5 credit by the BOE, students need to complete
all requirements for their Personal Transition Plan in order to graduate.
Students who have a 3.0 GPA or better are also encouraged to participate and
complete a Senior Project in order to receive the BOE Recognition Diploma

CHARTERED CLUBS
Except for National Honor Society, students may apply to be in a
chartered school club during their membership drives if they are in good
academic standing and have no obligations. They must adhere to the school
and club guidelines, policies, rules, and regulations.
BLANKET PERMISSION FORMS & VIDEO RELEASE FORMS
A blanket permission form that is signed by a student & his/her
parent/guardian allows them to attend all the school activities that are
listed on the form, including rehearsals, and set-up days and nights, as
well as student activities held off-campus.
Blanket permission forms are color-coded for each grade level. This is
necessary because activities listed on the form may differ for each grade
level.
Blanket permission forms & video release forms will be given out on fee
payment days. Students who have yet to complete a form & turn one in can
obtain a form from the SAC's office in Building P-26 during non-class hours.
