I have studied the Spanish language for over 10 years and had to learn it in
the same way as my students--in the classroom. Throughout the ten years, I
have learned, through trial and error, many of the best strategies for
learning a foreign language. I also studied abroad at La Universidad de
Benito Juarez in Oaxaca, Mexico and traveled to Spain. I received a
Bachelor's Degree in Spanish, as well as a Master's Degree in Spanish
Literature, from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I also speak Portuguese
and have traveled to Brazil. I practice the martial art of Capoeira, love
to travel, and hope to inspire in my students the same desire to explore and
experience the world and what it has to offer.
My mission for this class is to not only teach students how to communicate,
read, and write at the first year level of Spanish, but also to provide them
with an overview of the culture and countries associated with this
language. Included in this mission is to inspire interest and respect for
the Hispanic culture, while working to answer the following two essential
questions: "How will my knowing how to speak Spanish and my knowledge of its
culture and people contribute to my life in a positive way?" and "How will
my knowing how to speak Spanish and my knowledge of its culture and people
help me to contribute to my family, my school, my community, and my world?"
