Sacred Scripture Classwork/Homework

Week 1  
1.   The EQ for Chapter 1 Preparing for the Journey i "What Bible skills are 
needed to understand the Old Testament?"
Classwork:

   a. Students will bring their Bible, The New American Bible, a Fireside 
      Catholic Publishing Edition.  Lecture 1 They will learn how to become
      bible literate which will enable them to be competent in using the
      Bible properly and accurately.  This will include knowledge of the
      Book,  Chapters, verses, cross-references, and footnotes.
   b. Teacher's Reflection:  Yesterday, students were lectured on how to use 
the bible, vocabulary, and references in the library.  Students were 
introduced to the structure of the Bible and relating it to the primal forces 
introduced in Genesis Creation stories.  They will be tested next class.   
Homework:  
  a.  Students will read Chapter 1 Preparing for the Journey Pp. 13-21.  
      They will then do the review and journal questions on Pp. 17 and 21.  
  b.  Students will bring a 1 inch, 3 ring binder, along with 3 tabs titled 
      as follows:  First Tab - Entry Log,                                    
Second Tab-Classwork,Homework and Quizzes, Third Tab - Journals.

Week 2
Classwork:

  a.  Students will attempt to link the main events of the book to the    
      timeline on Pp.24 and 25.  An example of a main event would be the  
      Exodus. Students were instructed to do a 1 to 2 paragraph annotation 
for each event listed on pp.24 and 25.  
  b.  Students will be apprised of applying tools of critical reading    
      to better understand how God communicates to us.  
Homework:
 
  a.  Students will read Pp. 22-29 and do the review and journal questions 
on Pp.26 and 29. Students will be watching the video, "Prince of Egypt" and 
take notes on it and compare and contrast to what information they found in 
their annotated timeline.  Then, write a paragraph on how it applies to us 
today.
  b.  Review for Chapter 1 Preparing for the Journey Test.
  c.  Chapter 1 Preparing for the Journey Test.  

Week 3
Classwork:
1.  The EQ for Chapter 2 Maps for the Journey is "How important is 
    Archaeology to Bible Study?" 
Classwork:

  a.  Lecture 2 Students will read Chapter 2 Maps for theJourney,  
      Pp. 34-45   and do Review and Journal Questions Pp. 40 and 46.  
  b.  Students will read Chapter 2 Maps for the Journey, Pp.46-56 and do 
      Review and Journal Questions Pp. 51 and 56.  
  c.  Lecture 3 Four Major Categories of the Old Tetament and Description of 
Literature Types
  d.  Main Activities of the Prophets and Vocabulary: saga, legend, parable, 
anecdote.  
Week 4
  a.  Binder check #1, Learning Journal #1
Homework:  
   a. Handout 2B Archaeological Time Periods and the Old Testament
   b. Handout 2C Types of Literature in the Old Testament

Week 5

Classwork:  Lesson Unit on Genesis:  Students will divide into groups of four 
and they will select one of the stories listed below.  Their task will 
consist of a storyteller, skit, profile of the characters, and teach the 
religious message to the class.   Then, they will individually, do a 
reflective paragraph of each story presented.  

List:  Two versions of creating the world, sin of Adam and Eve, Cain's murder 
of Abel, Descendants of Cain and the invention of culture, the Flood and 
Noah's Deliverance, and Tower of Babel.   
   

   
Week 6

Classwork:
   a. Group Activity:  Select one of the following patriarchs and summarize 
the story for each.  Please include their achievements and challenges.  There 
will be 3 groups determined by size of class (i.e., 18 divided by 3 = 3 
groups).    Abraham - Genesis 12-23, Isaac- Genesis 24, 26-27; Jacob - 
Genesis 27-33; Joseph - Genesis 37-50.
Homework:  
   a. Lecture 5 Background information
   b. Vocabulary:  ancestor, angel, circumcision, evolution, covenant, myths, 
paganism
   
Week 7

Classwork:  
   a. Take Chapter 3 Stories for the Journey Test. Group Test.   
   b. Binder Check #2.  Be sure to have all your entry logs showing dates 
      and descriptions of each work done.  
 
Covenant Tree Activity
Instructions:    You and a team of Archaeologists have just returned from 
the field and are anxious to put together the data and findings 
(artifacts) discovered in situ.   In what you have found through your 
finding, you wish to start constructing  a Covenant Tree listing all the 
covenants from the time of Adam and Eve until the Babylonian Exile.  In this 
activity, you will work in groups of 4-5 and be accountable for listing , 
defining, and explaining one of the covenant so far covered in Book of 
Genesis in constructing your covenant tree by referring to your assigned 
passage cited below.   The covenants so are:  THE PRIMEVAL COVENANT(Genesis 
3:15-19;cf. 1 John 3,8), THE STEWARDSHIP COVENANT(Genesis 9:8-17), THE FAITH 
COVENANT(Genesis 15:1-21).
Materials needed:  construction paper 9” x 12” and 12” x 18”.  


 
Week 8

Classwork: 
   a. Read Chapter 4 The Journey to the Promised Land Begins Pp. 100-102.  Do 
Review Questions and Journal on P. 102.
   b. Lecture 6 on the 12 Tribes, Civil Laws and Religious Laws, Route of 
Exodus.  
 
Week 9

Classwork:

   a.  Do Learning Journal # 1, writing a 1 page or a two page type-written 
      journal on how have you grown in terms of knowledge, skills, and 
      values?

Homework:
  a.  Our next focus will be on the Biblical books that comprise 
      Deuteronomic History which are based on the Book of Deuteronomy.  We 
      will focus primarily on Books of Joshua and the Judges which describe
      Israelite history covering the conquest of Jericho to the time of the 
      kings.  We see the 12 tribes united in war against the various    
      territories in Canaan.  Since there was no Israelite king at this
      time, Yahweh was looked upon as a Warrior-King who would protect them 
      in their battles.  The role of the Judges besides being military 
      leaders was to function as prophet as well.
Classwork:
  a.  In the next assignment, you will be working in groups in getting the 
religious message across in your skit as follows:  
      Group 1:  Read and summarize Judges 4-5 and present to class.
      Group 2:  Read and summarize Judges 6-8:35 and present to class.
      Group 3:  Read and summarize Judges 13-16 and present to class.
      Group 4:  Read and summarize the Book of Ruth and present to class.

Week 10

Classwork:

a.   Upon completion of presentation and skits, you will write a journal 
giving a brief summary on what was the religious message for each of the 
three presentations othere than your own.  Since we would have covered the 
same content which deals with the Judges in Chapter 5 The Journey Takes 
Shape,we will move on to Chapter 6 The Monarchy.  
b.   You will read Pp.132-152, citing related scriptural passages and then 
answer the following questions:
(1)  What negative consequences did Samuel the Prophet warn the Israelites 
about having a king?
(2)  Compare and contrast the three monarchs:  Saul, David, and Solomon in 
terms of their successes and shortcomings.  Then tell me which of the these 
three kings was the most competent and give our reasons.  
(3)  What events led to the divided monarchy and what happened as a result 
of this?
(4)  What foreign nations were involved in the destruction of the southern 
and northern kingdoms and what impact did they have on each respectively?

Week 11

a.   The Essential Question for this course is, "How does the scriptural 
covenant define our relationship with God?"  The EQ to Chapter 6 The 
Monarchy is, "Hoes does the emergence of the Monarchy change the direction 
of Israelite history?"  Your task is to write a two page written or four 
page type-written journal on, "What connections can you make between the EQ 
of Chapter 6 The Monarchy and the EQ of this course?"
