Week 1
1. Distribution of syllabus.
2. Course EQ: How are the Words and Actions of Jesus of Nazareth relevant
to us today?
3. Students will go on a Scavenger Hunt on simulating "Who Do You Say That
I Am?" by asking teachers, administrators, and peers on "Who is Mr.
Gonzales?"
4. Dyad Interviews: Students will interview each other in pairs and find
out about each other and share with class. This will be followed by the
Mission Activity which simulates the four stages of Jesus'Life: Infancy
Narratives, Hidden Years, Jesus' Public Ministry,and Wandering Preacher,
Unique Teacher.
5. Introduction of textbook exercise: (1) Define the doctrine of the
Incarnation. What is dogma? (See Page 14 and review question #5 on
page 26)(2) What is the purpose of the Incarnation? See Page 15 (3)
What are the five ways of meeting Jesus? Give examples for each way.
(See Page 19 and review question #16 on page 26)
6. Maryknoll Magazine, March 2009. Read article on P.32-33 and tell me
whatthis is about Then read Mark 9:2-8 and who were there and what
happened at the transfiguration? Next read 2 Kings 2:1-18. Who was Elijah?
What was so great about him? Finally, read Book of Numbers 20:12. Who are
they talking about? How is the article on Radical Forgiveness related to
Moses who was denied access to the Promised Land as described in the Book of
Numbers?
7. In two paragraphs, write on the EQ: How does the Incarnation allow you
to meet Jesus?
8. Learning Journal #1: In one page, write how have you grown in terms of
knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes so far in this course?
Weeks 2-4
1. Beatitude Activity: Read and write out your interpretation 2 of the 8
Beatitudes in Matthew 5:1-12. Then draw a picture on one of two Beatitudes
you have interpreted. This will be followed by class discussion on the
Beatitudes.
2. Write out the 14 Stations of the Cross and draw a picture for each of
the 14 Stations. You will then meditate on each of the pictures and write
down your prayer on a current event that needs to be addressed such as the
war in Iraq, the homeless, the hungry, the abused, etc.
Week 5
1. Watch video, "Padre Pio: Miracle Worker". Students will take notes
identifying the important characters, themes, and events. How do these all
relate to Christology?
2. Quiz
3. Write a 1 page journal on: "What connections can you make with Padre
Pio's life as described in the video, Padre Pio: Miracle Worker and the
Stations of the Cross?"
Week 6
1. Read Chapter 1 The Historical Jesus Pp. 31-34. What do the following
Roman historians say about Jesus: Cornelius Tacitus, Claudius Suetonius,
Pliny the Younger, and Jewish historian, Flavius Josephus?
2. On pages 34-44, explain the three stages on how the Gospels came to be.
Read and explain Form Criticism on Pp. 49-50. Then do exercise
on Page 51.
3. Quiz on the above assigned work in Chapter 1 The Historical Jesus.
Week 7-9
1. Chap 2 the New Testament World of Jesus. Read and outlinePp.59-82.
then answer Chapter 2 EQ: How does the geography, language, religion,
and political climate of Palestine impact Jewish way of life in the
first century? by writing a 1 1/2 page written or 3 pages
type-written journal on the Chapter EQ.
Weeks 10
1. Read Chapter 3 The Essential Jesus Pp. 86-112. The EQs for this
chapter are: (1)What characteristics make up the essential Jesus and why?
(2) Why is there heavy emphasis on Jesus as Teacher? Do textbook
exercises on Pp. 101-102 Principle Parables of Jesus and Pp. 107-108.
Then answer the EQs.
2. Binder check # 1 will be due next class period.
Weeks 11 through 13
1.Power point presentations on the four Gospels: Mark, Matthew, Luke, and
John.Presentation dates are scheduled on June 1 for Periods A and C; June 2
for Periods E,F, and G subject to change at an earlier date at the discretion
of the teacher.
Instructions: You will be tasked with profiling and teaching about the Four
Gospel Writers: Mark, Matthew, Luke and John in a power point presentation
by your assigned group. You will have three class days to prepare and work
collaboratively. You will examine the structure and themes of each Gospel
focusing on redaction criticism which basically analyzes their editing
strategies such as drawing from sources such as oral traditions, written
collections, providing a basic outline and geographical framework, and why
was it written in connecting with each Gospel EQ of the Chapter to the
course EQ: "How are the word and actions of Jesus of Nazareth relevant to
us today?" To do this, you need to do the following:
1) provide a background for each Gospel
2) a basic outline of each Gospel
3) an overview of each Gospel
4) analyze and teach the important themes of each Gospel
5) provide illustrations, artwork to enhance your presentation
6) cite your sources including those taken from the textbook, the bible,
online, journals, etc.
Finally, you are required to take notes from all four presentations and do a
1 page reflection for each presentation.

(1)How are the seven signs which are organized around the seven miracles
manifest the power of Jesus’ life-giving words of actions?
(2)Why is John’s Gospel characterized as Christology from Above (High
Christology)?
