Getting to Know Me

Aloha kakou!
If you are not blessed enough to be born in Hawaii, I guess San Diego, CA is
the next best thing. I grew up in Scripps Ranch with my mother, father, older
brother and sister. I loved San Diego so much, I decided to stay a bit longer
to attend San Diego State University for my undergraduate and graduate
studies. After spending a large portion of my life in San Diego, I relocated
to Kailua, HI in 2007 to live with my sister and her husband. I had the great
pleasure of teaching at the same school with my big sister for a year. In my
limited free time I enjoy outrigger paddling, a good run, surfing and spending
time with family and friends. I am happy to report that I had a very exciting
summer. I married my best friend on June 25. The ceremony was blessed by light
showers from the heavens. I have since enjoyed resting up for the new school
year. I can't wait to get things started! Aloha, mahalo, and God bless.

Aloha ke Akua!

My Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy of education has been self developed and extremely influenced by
those who have touched my life educationally. I believe that all children, no
matter their race, religion, socio-economic status, or physical/mental
capacity, should be able to nourish their developing minds in a safe and
tolerant environment. This environment should support educational growth and
serve as a vehicle for self actualization. Not only should the students
discover their strengths, they should also discover their weaknesses and be
able to learn how to except their differences, along with the differences of
their fellow classmates. Students should not only learn how to tolerate the
standardized curriculum, but should also become educated in how to tolerate
and embrace the many cultures and life lessons that await them on their
educational journey.

Another important component of my philosophy is patience. The greatest gift
that you can give a student is the gift of time. I possess strong confidence
in my gift of patience for all of my students. I believe that every student
should not only be educated, but should be cared for, loved, and given the
gift of a future. It is my goal to leave a strong impression on my students to
share their new knowledge and embrace the practice of patience. In my
experience, I recognize that students thrive educationally and emotionally
when given the gift of patience, love, respect, and encouragement.

I hope to support my students’ foundation of confidence in regards to
education. I strive to establish a classroom environment that supports all the
needs of my students. I believe that every child should feel a sense of
self-efficacy, autonomy, and belongingness. The idea of reaching every child
on their level in a single day may seem hard to fathom. It is my goal to touch
my students’ lives in ways that makes them stronger learners in and out of the
classroom and in future academia. It is either my job to lay the educational
foundation or begin to build the grand structure that will house their
priceless knowledge.

It has been my life long dream to become an educator that not only molds the
minds of our future, but serves as a role model that leaves an impenetrable
mark on their lives. Being a teacher has been said to be a selfless,
exhausting, time consuming, and noble profession. The optimistic traits make
teaching so appealing, but the traits that exude pessimism are quickly
forgotten when a teacher experiences the unforgettable feeling of changing a
child’s life for the better.
