____________________________________________________________________
Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition is for students who
want to take a college-level English literature and composition course and
for those preparing for the Advanced Placement English examination in May in
order to receive college credit. It is designed for students willing and
able to do college work in high school. This two-semester sequenced course is
recommended for accelerated seniors. This course focuses on an in-depth study
of the chronological development of English literature from the Anglo-Saxon
Period through the mid-Twentieth Century, with advanced composition and
discussion skills as related to literary analysis, and an emphasis on
critically reading and writing about literature. This course includes
independent research and group work. Purchase of novels is required.
The key eras include the Anglo-Saxon Period, the Middle Ages, the
Renaissance, the Seventeenth Century, the Eighteenth Century, the Romantic
Period, the Victorian Period, and the late Nineteenth Century through the
mid-Twentieth Century. Although the primary emphasis is on the literature
itself, the authors' styles and the evolution of themes and genre, we will
also focus on pertinent historical, philosophical, and artistic concerns.
English 9. 10, and 11 Accelerated English or by prior consent of department
