In the first few weeks of school, 6th grade will do a grow-beast alligator lab to learn about the
scientific method and how to write a lab report. Sixth grade will also participate in the metric Olympics
to learn about the metric system, estimating and measuring. 8th grade will see how cell phones affect
reaction time. 7th grade will see how music affects reaction time. 6th grade will see if
gender affects reaction time.
8th grade will move on to density and do a gummy bear density lab. 7th Grade will do a Mr. Peanut
lab where they take measurements and analyze the data. 6th grade will work with microscopes and
make an edible cell in order to learn and visualize the parts of a cell. They will make an animal cell and
a plant cell shrinky dinks. 7th grade will see how temperature effects a worms heart
beat.
In October, 6th grade will construct a model of DNA. They will also make a DNA necklace out of their
own DNA that they extract from their cheek cells. 7th grade will do an experiment to see how moisture
affects mold growth on bread. They will also observe what happens to an egg in vinegar, salt and corn
syrup. 8th grade will work with calipers and measure a variety of objects. They will also find the area
of the objects. 8th grade will do an experiment on how sunscreen affects color changing beads. They
will also make crystal gardens.
In November, 6th grade will observe Bess bugs. They will also make a bottle ecosystem consisting of
water, land, plants and animals. 7th and 8th grade will do an experiment to see how much weight a
bess bug can pull. They will compare their answer to the amount of weight a human their size would
have to pull for an equivalent weight. 7th grade will do a series of trait labs to study heredity while 8th
grade will do a melting ice experiment to study changes of state.
