What time should my student arrive to school?

It depends. If your students eats a school breakfast, he/she
will need to be here around 8:00 a.m. If your student does not
eat a school breakfast, arriving around 8:15 is fine. Students
are dismissed at 8:20 from the gymnasium to their classrooms.
Sometimes an after school club may meet in the morning. The
sponsoring teacher will provide exact times and directions in
that case.

What time is school breakfast served?

A healthy breakfast is served every day at Carolyn Wenz School.
Students may eat breakfast from 8:00 to 8:20 each morning in the
cafeteria. Any student may eat breakfast, whether he/she is
free, reduced pay, or full pay.

What times are the lunches for each grade level?

Each grade level has a different time assigned for their
lunches. Third grade eats from 11:00 to 11:45. Fourth grade
eats from 11:30 to 12:15. Fifth grade eats from 11:45 to 12:30.
Actual time in the caferteria is around thirty minutes. The
other fifteen minutes is for recess on the east or west
playgrounds or in the gym during bad weather.

What door does my student use at dismissal time?

It depends on the grade level. With over 300 students dismissing
at the same time, all of us using the same exit is just not
workable. We have made a plan where each grade level leaves from
the exit closest to their part of the building. The third grade
leaves from the west doors on Washington Street. The fourth
grade exits out the main front doors. The fifth grades dismiss
from the east doors near the new playground.

My student has joined fifth grade band. What do we do with the instrument each day?

There is a designated storage place in the cafeteria for all band
instruments. Large instruments that will not fit in the lockers
may be placed there during the day, then picked up on the way to
small group band lessons. Fifth grade teachers allow band
students time to get their instruments when they are preparing to
leave at the end of the day. All band instruments must be taken
home each day.

What do I do if I need to pick up my student early from school?

We ask that all dental appointments, doctor appointments, or
other reasons for leaving early be planned for after the regular
school day. We understand that that is not always possible. If
you must pick your student up early, you will need to come into
the building to sign him/her out. If you will not be returning,
all homework should be taken with them at that time.

Are there any after school activities at Wenz?

There are several! Homework Club begins in September on Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday after school from 3:00 to 4:00 each day.
There is a special Homework Club for third, fourth, and fifth
grade groups. Students nominated for Homework Club will bring
home a permission slip from their classroom teacher.

There are also some fun after school enrichment activities.
Guitar Club, Children's Choir, Fifth Grade Band, Newspaper,
Student Council, Garden Club, Cooking Club, Walking Club, Spanish
Club, Book Club, Drama Club, and Yearbook are all sponsored by
teachers who volunteer their time for our students. Permission
slips or invitations will be sent home by the sponsors as their
sign-up time approaches.

Can students bring cell phones to Carolyn Wenz?

There is really no reason for a student to have a cell phone at
Caroyn Wenz during the day. If you feel your student must have a
cell phone for after school, we ask that all cell phones be
turned OFF, and left in their lockers.

What do I do if my student is absent?

It is extremely important that you notify the office. Parents
must contact us for your student to receive an excused absence.
When you call in to the office, please send a message to the
classroom teacher asking for make-up work to be sent to the
office at the end of the day. Teachers will gladly send books
and assignments so your student can get started on make-up work
before he/she even returns to school. This is especially
important if your student will miss more than one day of school.

Can I have someone else pick up my student?

We do not allow students to leave Carolyn Wenz School with
another person unless we have express, written permission from
their parent(s). Your student's safety is very important to us!
