WELCOME BACK to school! My name is Ms. Carmen Scanlon. I will be your

child's seventh grade teacher this school year. Seventh grade is always

such a treat for me. The students are equally as excited because they

realize that they are now upper classmen.

With that status comes a lot of responsibility. This year I know will be a

Wonderful, jam-packed academic school year because each student will be sure

to follow the classroom and school regulations. Our school motto talks about being the

Best of the Best. All of my students ARE the BEST! In order to be at

your best, you do need some guidelines. The following contains details that

will insure that every student knows what to expect from me and what I should

be able to expect from them. Please refer back to this site

http://teacherweb.com/IL/ChicagoPublicSchools/Scanlon108

whenever needed inorder to be kept abreast of the many happenings in the

classroom. YOU MAY ALSO E-MAIL ME AT ANY TIME AT cscanlon@cps.edu. Thank

you in advance. I ALSO WILL CONTINUE USING THE CLASSDOJO SITE TO COMMUNICATE

WITH YOU. ANY INCOMING SEVENTH GRADE PARENT OR NEW STUDENTS MAY EMAIL

ME WITH A PARENT EMAIL AND I WILL BE SURE TO ADD YOU ON MY SITE. CLASSDOJO

WORKS IN CONNECTION WITH TEXT MESSAGING ON A CELL PHONE. BUT YOU MAY

ALSO ACCESS CLASSDOJO VIA A COMPUTER.

  * Students will only be allowed to go to their lockers at three different

times of the day; morning, before lunch, and prior to going home for the

day. Further, students should only have the necessary materials in their

book bags. Those materials depend on the schedule for the day. Morning

classes dictate the books to have in the book bags in the morning, and

afternoon books dictate the books to have in the book bags in the after-

noon. This policy has been instituted to help organize your child. This

has been a rule for my classroom for the last seven years. PLEASE

DISCUSS THESE TIMES ONCE AGAIN WITH YOUR CHILD(REN).

  * School starts at promptly 7:30. Their first period class begins at

7:45; however they will be marked tardy if they are not at their seats

by 7:35 a.m. I WILL call for a parent meeting if your child is tardy

chronically. I am extremely concerned about all of my students,

therefore I call and touch base with parents as well as meet with you.

  * ALL hard covered books MUST be covered by September 11, 2017. We must

preserve our text books. This is a mandatory rule for all Owen

     students.

  * We do a lot of word processing in terms of typed class work and essays. I also use various

computer sites to supplement my instruction. Please bring lap tops, tablets, IPads to class on a

daily basis. Please be sure to have a signed computer waiver on file. This year all seventh

graders will have a laptop assigned to them to use while they are in school. All computers are in

pristine condition and they will be monitored daily in order to preserve them for future use. The

child is responsible for their assigned computer. Any and all problems should be reported to me

so that I can take the measures needed. If a computer is damaged by the child, he/she will incur

the expense to repair or replace it.

  * All Students will receive reading and math MTSS on a weekly basis within their Balanced
Literacy small groups.

  * Lunch will be eaten in the gym room daily at 11:45 a.m. Recess will be

     directly after lunch.

* This year students will transition upstairs to Mrs. Susberry's class for Social Studies at 12:30

and then transition to Ms. Zachary's class for math class at 1:30.

  * Conduct sheets will go home weekly. They will be given to your child

at the end of every week. They must be returned at the beginning of

the following week. Anytime your child neglects to return their

infraction sheet(s) it will result in an added infraction.

  * Please make sure your child has his/her homework completed on time.

** Every late assignment will result in one grade lower than expected.

One day late will result in a 10% decrease. Two days late will result

in a 20% decrease. Work will not be accepted after the second day.

There will be no exceptions to this rule.

  * Remember the Reading Logs are a mandatory assignment in Reading. They

are added into the Reading grade. A 100 is given for current logs that

meet the required time only. Reading logs that are submitted a day late

will loose 10%,and reading logs turned in two days late will result in

a 20% loss of grade. Extra credit will not be assessed if log is turned in late.

***READING LOGS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED MORE THAN TWO DAYS LATE. THERE IS A
POSSIBILITY OF GAINING EXTRA CREDIT IN READING IF YOUR CHILD(REN) READ MORE
THAN THE ASSIGNED MINUTES FOR THE MONTH. FIVE POINTS EXTRA CREDIT WILL BE
CALCULATED PER LOG SUBMITTED.***

  * Please ask your child about his/her quiz or test grades. Any test 70 or

below must be signed by a parent and returned within two days of

     receiving the test.

  * All students are required to complete a Young Authors manuscript. The

assignment is worth three (3) full grades in writing due to the large

amount of time required to complete the assignment.

* Please check with your child periodically that they have all of their

school supplies. If students come to school without supplies, this will

serve as a true hinderance to their education. Supplies should be updated

   on an as needed basis.

  * Please be sure to periodically check your child's grades on the parent

portal. If you do not have your log in information please see Mrs. Morris

as soon as possible. Checking the parent portal from time to time will

ensure that you are kept abreast of your child's academic progress.

Thank You for all your support,

          Ms. Carmen Scanlon

concerning your child. I wish to have an open line of communication. In
