FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
School attendance hours are 8:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The school office is open from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on days that school is in session. I am usually here from 7:30-4:00. I understand that sometimes there are unavoidable reasons for being late. Please help to make sure your child arrives to school on time. We begin promptly at 8:45 and I don't want anyone to miss out on their opportunities for learning. What if we plan a vacation during the school year? Please see the school website for the policy on vacations and attendance. http://www.d303.org/schools/thornwood/1corepages/vacation.html How are birthdays celebrated in 2LK? I always really enjoyed celebrating my birthday at school and would love for your child to do the same! Your child may bring in a NON-FOOD birthday treat to share with the class. We will sing to your child, and discuss their plans for their birthday. We will celebrate summer birthdays at the end of May or on their half birthday (you choose) so everyone can have a turn! Can my child pass out party invitations at school? Please do not send party invitations or thank you letters to school unless everyone in the class is invited to the party. If all of the girls or all of the boys are invited, that is okay. Thank you for understanding! E-mail is the best way to reach me. My address is Lauren.Krahenbuhl@d303.org The kids will eat snack every day at the same time. I expect students to bring healthy, ready-to-eat snacks. Research shows that a healthy snack (besides being good for you) helps students' ability to perform well in school. This is true for positive behavioral as well as cognitive functioning. Can my child bring a drink for snack time other than water? Please only send water for snack time. Drinks may spill and create a sticky mess and attract bugs. Please see the section called, "Class Schedule." On curriculum night you will have an opportunity to meet the room parent and sign-up to help. Occassionally there may be opportunities that "pop up" throughout the year when I need an extra set of hands. I will send home a note to let you know if this happens! I LOVE kids! I LOVE helping children achieve their goals! I LOVE working with parents because I know you always want the best for your kids, and I do too! Before I earned my teaching certificate, I earned a bachelor's degree in creative writing and a minor in art. I plan on writing and illustrating children's books some day, but right now I want to focus on working directly with children and families. How long have you been teaching? Last year I taught third grade at Corron for my first official year of teaching. Two years ago, I started at Corron as an inclusion aid for a student in first grade. I completed my Master's degree in Education in May of 2006. During my time at NIU, I student taught in a second grade classroom. I have over six years of experience in a variety of educational settings (Montessori, Preschool, and After School programs). Second grade is a wonderful grade to teach, and I am really looking forward to the school year! On the first day of school, we will decide our rules together. What if I want to chat with you about my child's progress? Wonderful! Please contact me and we can schedule a time to meet. I want to make sure that I have time set aside just for you! Where can I find the answers to my child's Home Links? Go to the "links" page for a link to "Family Letters" for all elementary Everyday Math curriculum. At the end of the family letter for each unit is the answer key for the Home Links for the corresponding unit. My child is absent, and I would like their homework. What do I do? If you let me know via e-mail, or tell someone in the office, I can have your child's homework ready by 3:00. I can leave it in the office for someone to pick up before 4:00. Or, I can send it home with another student as long as the other child's parent has agreed to this arrangement. My child says they need money for math lessons, is this true? Yes. Part of our math curriculum involves counting and money skills. It is very important for students to see a connection between these skills and their everyday lives, so we will be working with money the whole year. Each child will need to bring some real money to school to use for math. The money should be counted out by you and your child. Please send the coins to school in a labeled Ziploc bag. The money will be kept in your childs Math Tool Kit and will be returned at the end of the school year. Please send the following items: Thank you, Mrs. Krahenbuhl |
