The ABC's of Second Grade
Attendance
A successful school experience is the responsibility of the children, the
parent and the school. Your child's progress, both academically and
socially, is influenced to a great extent by daily participation. Regular
attendance without tardiness is a key. If your child will be absent, please
call into the office to notify the school.
Arrival and Dismissal
The front doors open at 8:20. Students should not arrive before this time.
2nd Graders will line up in the hallway until 8:30 and will be released to
their classroom. Attendance will be taken at 8:41. Any child not in the
classroom will be considered tardy.
Allergies
Please let us know of any allergies your child may have-especially for food.
We sometimes have snacks and it would be helpful to have that record on file.
Backpacks/Schoolbags
Each child will need some sort of bag to bring home papers, library books.
art work, notices, etc. each day. Please have your child share the contents
of the backpack with you daily.
Birthdays
With so many allergies present, 2nd grade has decided to do without Birthday
treats. We will still be celebrating your child's special day. We would love
them to bring in pencils, stickers, a classroom book to read or even have
their parent come in and read to the class.
Book Orders
I will be sending home children's book order forms(on a monthly basis) .
They represent an opportunity for you to buy books for your child at a
greatly reduced rate. These prices are even lower than most school book
fairs and far below Barnes and Noble. What a great way to build your home
library!
Calendar
You will receive a calendar of the school holidays, early release days and
Non Attendance Days in the Corron Monthly Newsletter and the district 303
webpage.
Computers
We have a wonderful computer lab here at school. We also have a computer in
the classroom. We use a variety of age-appropriate programs that reinforce
math and reading skills.
Dress
We work and play hard in Second grade and we really do get dirty!!! Please
dress your child in play clothes. Of course, there are days when you may
want to dress your child in fancy outfits, such as picture day. Please be
sure to put your child's name on sweaters, boots, hats, and coats, anything
that he/she might take off. No one seems to own nameless clothes!!! Also it
saves trouble when two or more children have the same kind of boots, coats,
etc.
Emergency Closings
If the school is closed for any emergency, or if opening is delayed you will
receive a pre recorded message to your home phone number as well as
announcements on area news broadcasts and the district webpage.

Field Trips
We plan field trips that are both fun and educational for the children. We
often need parent volunteers on the trips. Chaperones will be chosen at
random.
Fire Drills
Fire drills are held periodically throughout the year. All students will
participate in this event.
Footwear
Students should come to school everyday in comfortable shoes to wears. They
need sneakers for physical education and in the winter they need something
to put on when they come inside and remove their boots. It is to hot to wear
boots all day long and since we sit and play on our floor, it is much nicer
if our wet boots have not tracked it up.
Hands-On Learning
I feel that the best way to help children learn is to make learning fun.
Important concepts can be learned by doing meaningful hands-on activities.
There are times when seatwork is required and necessary, but for the most
part, our classroom will be an active learning environment.
Homeroom Helpers
I can not and would not want to do without them! We often use Parent
Volunteers in our classroom to help with Literacy centers, parties, and a
myriad of other needs.
Homework
Corron Second graders have homework every night. Math homelinks should be
completed daily when the house is highlighted on the current page. Reading
for 20 minutes is a 2nd grade requirement. I do try to not give homework
overt the weekend, but it can happen occasional. Homework is sent home for
additional practice and will simply be check over for completion. Please
check and correct your child's homework before they turn it in. If your child
is struggling with a concept at home, simply write me a note or email and let
me know and I will set aside some time to assist them.
Illness
The question of when to keep your child home from school is often a
difficult one, especially when decisions must be made first thing in the
morning. It is important, however, to keep your child home if he/she is ill.
This helps to make them more comfortable and prevents others from becoming
ill. Children function more effectively in the classroom when they are
healthy.
Kindness
Students in our classroom are encouraged and expected to treat all members
of our class, as well as others, with kindness and respect. Hitting,
fighting, name-calling, and making fun of others will not be permitted.
Library
The children go to the library one day a week. In the library, we have many
helpers, that are there to help us if needed. We do not need
to trade our book every time, but books are due every two weeks.
Literacy Centers
During literacy centers, children will get guided practice reading and
writing skills, while the teacher works with small groups of children. The
center activities are designed to strengthen letter/sound knowledge,
listening skills, fluency, and comprehension.
Lost and Found
We encourage children to check the lost and found collection for any missing
items.The lost and found is located in the cafeteria. We ask that you label
clothing items worn to school by your child. This will help us return a lost
article to its owner. Items left on the classroom floor at the end of the day
will be sent to the lost and found.
Math
The Second Grade mathematics curriculum provides students with mathematical
experiences that help them develop number sense and a positive attitude
towards mathematics that will continue through their school career and their
lives.
Music
Mrs. Simon is our music teacher. She meets with each class
for 30 minutes once a week.
Nurse
We are very fortunate to have two wonderful nurses at Corron,Mrs Silenas-
Moore and Mrs. Esposito. I take care of minor hurts, such as scratches and
scrapes, but send the child to the nurse for more serious injuries and
illnesses. Please be sure to send in any change of contact numbers in case
the nurse needs to get in touch with you.
Parties
There are three main parties each year. They are held at Halloween, December
Holidays (Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa), and Valentines. All parents
will be asked to contribute to these parties. The Homeroom Helper will
contact you when your help is needed.
Physical Education
Each 2nd Grade class will have P.E. four times a week with Mrs. Spelic. The
children are asked to wear sneakers on P.E. days. Young
girls might consider wearing pants or having a pair of shorts to slip on
under their dress.

Report Cards
At the end of each quarter, Report cards are sent home. I hold a conference
at the end of November to discuss the individual testing I have done and the
educational plan I have for each child. I hope you will make an extra effort
to attend the Parent-Teacher Conferences. These are short meetings but they
give us a chance to talk about your child.
Restrooms
I permit students to use the bathroom once in the AM and once in the PM,
plus before school, after school and at lunch. My priortity is learning and
this system seems to deter extensive bathroom breaks. Of course, emergencies
are always considered!
Snacks
Wd do have snack everyday. ONLY healthy snacks are allowed for this time!
Snack time occurs during our independent work time.
Show-N-Tell
In our class room, we have a Mystery Bag. This bag is sent home with the
Lucky Duck(Helper)for the day. This person takes it home and puts a special
object in it and then brings it to school and gives the class clues about
what the object is. Other Show-n-tell items are permitted to educational
items only.
Toys
Children are asked NOT to bring toys from home. We have much to do, in a
short amount of time and toys are for after school, not during school.
U
"U" are important in your child's education. I encourage “U” to always be
reading to your child and show and interest in their daily work.
Visits
You are welcome to visit us at any time. Corron has the policy that
ALL GUESTS (including familiar faces) are required to check in at the office
and wear a guest badge. Corron welcomes and encourages family
involvement.The presence of a guest badge will help identify visitors to
all faculty and staff. It is important to remember that while this may seem
inconvenient to frequent visitors, it is the goal and responsibility of the
school to create a safe learning environment.

Wish List
Throughout the school year we sometimes need supplies above and beyond our
classroom materials.
eXtra Clothes
Corron asks parents to donate to the nurses office, any outgrown clothes to
the office. These are used in case of a bathroom accident, messy spill or
wet and muddy playgrounds. This way we do not have to bother you at work or
home.
Younger Siblings
It is in your child's and the program's best interest to have our parent
volunteers available without younger children. This not only allows your
full attention to be focused on the class, but also allows for some special
time between you and your student. Thank you for making childcare
arrangements for younger siblings.
ZZZZZZs
Make sure that your child gets plenty of rest. Setting and keeping a bedtime
is a wonderful gift you can give to your child. It will help them to be
alert and ready to learn each day!
