I use the “card system” in my classroom to help students stay on track during the day. Each child starts the day on the color GREEN, their goal is to stay on this color all day long. When one of our classroom rules is broken, the child will be asked to turn their card to YELLOW, this is a warning! The next time a rule is broken, the card will be turned to BLUE. At this time the child will lose 5 minutes of recess or choice center time. Finally, if another rule is broken the card will be turned to ORANGE and the child will lose all of recess or choice center time and a parent will be notified. If a child receives RED, he or she will need to see Mr. Wood and spend some time in his office. This rarely happens, but can especially when a behavior is continually exhibited or if a particularly serious behavior occurs.
Along with the card system I believe in rewarding good behavior with positive reinforcement. This could be with kind words, praise, a small treat, or treasure box. A marble jar is used as a whole class reward. Students have a chance to earn marbles when they are making good behavior choices as a class or individual. Once all of the marbles have been earned, students are usually given a classroom party. Past parties have included: movie and popcorn, ice cream, cookie, etc.
