READING
This week the children will be reading a story called "The Garden of Abdul Gasazi." The new vocabulary words are: awesome, incredible, impossible, convinced, disappeared, and discovered. Please review these words at home with your children. Again, the children will be bringing home a reading slip for reading the story with someone in the family. Enjoy reading with your child, and please sign the paper and return it to school the next day.
Next week will be an assessment week with 2 short stories and quizzes. There will be some new words: escapade, fleeing, sanctuary, wallow, safari, rendition, liner, berth, serenade, and menace. We will review in class, but quizzing at home for the Friday test would be helpful.
January reading logs will be coming home this week. Please encourage your child to read for 20 minutes and color in the log for each day.
The children continue to work on WRITING SKILLS in class. We have been working on Expository writing...taking baby steps to create a 4-5 paragraph essay with many details! The children will be generating ideas for our essays in class. However, anytime that your child has a chance to write about something in his/her life, please encourage him/her to take a notebook and just WRITE!
MATH
The children are busy working on multiplication facts. There will be a test on Wed. on the facts 0 - 5. We do many practice activities in class to memorize these multiplication facts, however, drill at home is important too! As we head into the chapter on x6-9, there will be daily homework with many problems. We will be moving along each day with new skills and the children need to take it upon themselves to practice on their own. Thank you for your support with this.
SPELLING
Our spelling words this week are homophones - words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings. The words this week are:hear, here, new, knew, its, it's, our, hour, there, their, they're, seen, and scene. Sentences will be due on Thursday, and the test will be on Friday.
Next week will be a review week with the spelling words from the last 4 weeks. Hopefully the children have remembered these spellings. They will do homework on the words which they are still unsure of.
Have a wonderful few weeks, and stay warm!!
Remember to call or email with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Kathy O'Shaughnessy
