Parent News
1/29/10
Next week we will read biographies about famous Americans. The
vocabulary is attached to this copy of the “Parent News.” Please review the
words with your child. The vocabulary words are more difficult because they
are more about the genre than about the actual biographies we will read.
Our first biography will be about Ellen Ochoa, an astronaut. The second
biography is about Theodore Roosevelt, a president of the United States.
The third biography is about Wilma Rudolph, an Olympic track champion.
Students will also have the opportunity to read additional biographies. The
vocabulary and spelling tests will be on Friday, February Feb. 5th. We will
be discussing the contributions of President George Washington and President
Abraham Lincoln to American history during the month of February.
We will continue to work on the time math chapter next week.
Students will also practice their skills using a time packet. Please
continue to review the subtraction flashcards.
We will not have a Valentine’s Day party but we will exchange
Valentine cards and do a fun math activity. If you and your child decide to
send Valentine cards, it is important that your child have a card for every
student in our class. I do not want any hurt feelings. I would like your
child to assume the responsibility for the writing of the names on the
Valentines. This should be done at home. We will exchange Valentines on
Friday, February 12th. A list is attached to this Parent News. Please do
not have your child bring the cards before this date.
It is fun for children to receive mail. We are requesting that each
child bring a stamped self-addressed envelope to school by Monday, February
8th. Each student will pick a name from a hat and write a friendship letter
and draw a picture for the person that he/she picks. The letters will be
mailed on Thursday.
Report cards went home on Wednesday of this week. Please sign the
report card envelope and return it to school by Monday. My parent/teacher
conferences will be held on Monday, February 1st, and Tuesday, morning,
February 16th. Monday is an early dismissal day. Students will be
dismissed from school at 1:50 PM. There is no school for students on
Tuesday, February 2nd. It is an Institute Day. There is no school on
Monday, February 15th, in observance of Presidents’ Day. There is no school
on Tuesday, February 16th. It is a parent/teacher conference day. If
you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to
contact me. If you contact me by phone, please spell your name and repeat
your phone number. I look forward to meeting with you at conferences.
Stay warm!
Ms. Sue Mies
