How do I know what my child has to do for homework?
Students have an assignment book that they need to fill out each day. Parents
should check the specific page each day for the work that still needs to be
completed and sign off on each page. Sometimes we place a student on an
assignment envelope that the parent needs to sign off on each evening. This
generally happens when a student has been unsuccessful filling out the
assignment notebook and needs a smaller, more structured method of keeping
track of assignments.
What kind of help does my child get in social studies and science?
Mrs. Gracious and I go with the students into the science and social studies
classes. We help the students participate in all the activities. I can read
chapters to the students,work on vocabulary, modify assignments or tests,
give them assistance in completing projects and teach them how to use
resource materials to find the information they need on written activities or
projects.
How do I know if my child is learning?
Students bring home weekly updates of their progress each week. I send them
home on Monday, so that my updates are not confused with their homeroom
teacher's update that is sent on Friday. These updates include student's
completed assignments from the previous week that weren't kept for their
portfolio. Parents are asked to look over the work with students and make
comments on their effort. I personally am evaluating each student's progress
on a regular basis. I use charts, quizzes, assignments, and timings to assess
each child. If you wish to make an appointment and come in, you are welcome
to see all of these. Of course, there are also IEP updates in each report
card as well as midterms and parent conferences. I am also available by phone
or e-mail anytime you have a question or concern.
How can I help my child at home?
Make sure that your child is bringing home their assignment notebook or
envelope. If they leave their materials at school, send them back
to pick up the things they left. Sign the notebook each evening. That lets
your child know that there is communication going on between us. Don't be
afraid to write questions in the assignment notebook. We'll reply that day!
Please set aside time each evening for them to do their homework. Encourage
them to read! Scan their finished work for overall quality. If you see that
the work isn't up to the quality that they can produce, then have them
correct it. Together we can make a difference in the knowledge that your
