This is my sixth year of teaching, and my fourth year in sixth grade. I
love teaching social studies in addition to language arts; the two
subjects are equal favorites with me, and I'm especially happy to be able to
tie both curricula together. After all, real life is not divided up into
separate subjects, and school should prepare us to think critically in all
areas of our lives. I love working with middle school students because they
are developing the ability to think deeply about what they read and to make
connections between the text and their own lives. I live in this District,
and I have one daughter who is a freshman at Vanderbilt University in
Nashville, TN, and another who is a sophomore at Warren High School. I also
have two grown, married children who live in Utah. My son and his wife have
two small children, and my daughter had her first baby last year, so I am a
proud grandma as well.
Sixth grade is a very exciting and challenging time for kids. As they enter
middle school there are new privileges and responsibilities, and students
must learn to navigate this world, make wise choices, and learn from
mistakes. My goal is to help each of these unique students learn and grow
academically, socially, and emotionally right along with their physical
growth. I'm extremely excited to have these students for longer periods of
time than I had with the older kids. I think this will help us establish
relationships of caring and trust which will provide us with an environment
where students can feel comfortable pushing themselves outside of their
comfort zones to explore new ideas and positive experiences.
