Reading/Language Arts

**Biography reports are due Tuesday, March 17th.

Reading:  Next week, we are going to begin a novel study of Number the Stars by Lois Lowery.  This novel is a piece of realsitic fiction based on a childhood friendship during World War II.  Some of the skills we will be working on are: ceating mental images, character analysis, conflict, and inferencing.

Reading Logs
Reading logs are a requirement for this class to enhance an appreciation for reading for pleasure.  My students are to read at least 20 minutes a night/at least 5 nights a week. They are to fill in reading logs with the book they are reading, how many minutes they read, and an extension response to the reading.
Some extensions starters are:
This reminds me of...
If...then...
I think...because...

Help your child create their extensions by having a conversation with them about the novel they are reading.  Ask them questions such as:
What parts of the book do you like the most/least?
Are there any characters you can relate to?
What lesson is the author trying to teach you?
What is the setting?
What is the mood of the characters?  Has it changed througout the book?

Spelling:
Spelling pre-tests are given every Monday.  3x and 5x each are assigned after the pre-tests.  Students who receive 0-2 wrong on the pre-test will complete 3x each, and students who receive 3 or more wrong on the pre-test will complete 5x each.

Language Arts:
Next week we will use our Language Arts time to present our biography reports.  The following week we will begin a unit on Verbs.  Students will learn the variety of verb forms and complete activities based on these lessons.
