About The Teacher

Mrs. Ruffolo attended the Traphagen School of Fashion and Design in New York,
with a double major in dress design and illustration. Traphagen was famous for
its technical orientation of fashion design. Her passion for design drove her
to open a business where she specialized in custom designed evening apparel
for women.

As her children grew older, she became involved as a volunteer for district
109, establishing and teaching art programs for children in grades 1-8. This
became a love of hers, as she discovered much joy in seeing how children
learn, and how they applied their knowledge in unique ways.

She began teaching art at the Deerfield Park District where she taught for
four years before transitioning to Holy Cross. The good Lord paved the way
for her- she loves and feels blessed to be a part of the Holy Cross School
community, feeling that each day is a special gift.

Mission For The Class

It is my goal as your child's Art teacher to introduce them to the Wonderful
World of Art- a world in which they may discover new wonders through finding
beauty in simple things, exploring nature, and examining all of God's
magnificent creation, enabling them to truly observe everything with new eyes.

Children love to draw and color, but what is it that makes that particular
picture so special and how may it be further developed?

In art, students will not simply draw and color, but will also study the
technical aspects of art, allowing them to understand and implement these new
techniques and this new knowledge when creating their own works of art.

The elements of art- line, shape, color, form, texture, value, and space, are
focused on in the primary and intermediate grades. In Jr. High, students study
and apply the principles of art- balance, contrast, variety, repetition,
harmony, and unity.

Through this new approach to studying art through aesthetic, visual, and
technical elements, students will have gained a deeper and new-found
understanding and appreciation for the visual arts and their importance in our
ever changing world today. They will discover the greater significance of art-
it's ability to create a unifying bridge between all disciplines and disparate
areas of study.
