Classroom Procedures

First Grade Room Procedures!

Homework

Each Monday I will send home a newsletter that tells the weekly objectives
and activities. It should be in your child’s binder in the “homework”
packet. As the year progresses, I will tailor the homework to your child’s
specific needs. Please be sure to fill out the survey on the front of each
packet so I can make adjustments if needed!

Required Reading

Reading at home makes a world of difference for your child!!! Our first
grade FROG progam, run by our reading specialists, will be sending home books
each night at your child’s reading level. These books need to be read each
night, with repeated readings for fluency (speedy reading!). A pink sheet
will also be sent to record the books your child reads. When your child
completes the pink sheet, front and back, they will get to eat lunch in the
room on Friday! Please be sure to send their bag of books back to school
each day

Classroom Management

I fully believe in positive reinforcement to manage classroom behavior.
Praise and modeling are my main ways of motivating positive classroom
behavior. For our Pirate theme, each student has a treasure box with three
gold coins on it. In order to keep their coins, they will need to follow our
classroom rules.
The main first grade rules are:
• Listen and follow directions
• Work quietly, don’t disturb others
• Raise your hand
• Work and play safely
• Respect school and personal property
• Always be kind to others

I will be communicating with you on a nightly basis through your child’s
planner. Each child starts with three coins each morning. If your child has
3 or two coins(warning), they still receive a stamp. If your child has only
one coin, he/she loses their calendar stamp. No coins is a lost stamp, and
loss of part of recess or computer time. If your child loses their stamp, I
will write a short note on their calendar explaining what happened. When
your child receives 5 good days in a row, with your daily initial, they will
receive a prize from the prize box! It is up to your child to turn their
calendar in each day so they can receive their stamps. Each day your child
maintains three coins, they will put their name on a ticket for a Friday
prize drawing. The more 3-coin days, the more chances your child has to
receive a prize from the “Prize Box”!!
