DEFINITIONS are the primary focus of second semester in speech and language classes. The children
will use their knowledge of categories and their attributes to tell the meaning of words in a logical,
organized way. The formula we will use is: word to be defined + category + 2 important attributes. One
example would be: "A bench is a piece of furniture that is used for sitting and is usually made of wood."
In addition, they will investigate figurative language, specifically similes and metaphors. These abstract
comparisons will be encountered more and more in their reading selections. They also make written
expression rich and interesting. Again category and attribute knowledge will be used (e.g.: The piano is
as large as an elephant.). Any conversations you can have at home about any of these language
structures would be helpful. Students' specific individual goals will also be addressed. Happy Holidays!
