Announcements

I HOPE YOUR HOLIDAY BREAK IS GOING WELL!  PLEASE CHECK BACK SOON, AS I WILL HAVE INFORMATION POSTED REGARDING YOUR SEMESTER EXAMS!

SOPHOMORES:

As discussed in class - you can access a COMPLETE online version of your Literature book!  Just visit www.classzone.com, register as a student, using this code:  3136749-160 and you'll be able to view everything (stories, questions, etc.)  You can even LISTEN to stories being read to you by professional actors!  This is a wonderful option!

JUNIORS:

HAVING TROUBLE ACCESSING YOUR DIGITAL SCHOOL LOCKER ACCOUNT?
You're not alone!  The trial account has apparently expired EARLIER than we expected!  I've contacted Mrs. Villont, requesting that ALL accounts reinstated by the next time we are in the library (this Tuesday.)  Remember - this is why I strongly suggested that everyone save their files ALSO to their school drive as a back-up.

I am testing out a new program available which allows students to save their work to an internet based "locker" which is accessible from any computer with internet access!  Often, students save work to their computer drive here at school, but cannot access that from home.  Jump drives become lost or damaged.  This will allow a safe place to store work, and access it from anywhere!

To access, go to www.digitalschoollockers.com .  Your ID# is your firstinitiallastname2011.marian (for example, Nick Adams is nadams2011.marian).  It is similar to your network log in, except there is no period between your last name and the graduation year.  Your password is your student ID# (just like your network login.)  When you work with files, please ALSO save your work to your network drive or jump drive, just as a safe back-up.  WE ARE WORKING WITH THIS SYSTEM ON A TRIAL BASIS ONLY AT THIS TIME - so it is very important that you not only have back-up copies of your work elsewhere, but also give me honest feedback about this system!

Our attentions have immediately turned to launching our research paper project.  Students have chosen topics, written, rewritten and reviewed thesis statements.  We are in the library twice a week, currently gathering credible sources and beginning the process of gathering notecards.  Students will be required to create 100 hand-written notecards from 12 sources (at least.)  With every step of the writing process, I try to create a guided worksheet that will help focus thoughts.  This, I believe, is the most difficult skill:  taking random thoughts, opinions and knowledge and writing them out in a cohesive manner.  The steps we teach with this paper will be applied with every academic writing your student will complete throughout college.  Many of my former students have told me that they use these skills with every paper now in college.

If you have not created a www.turnitin.com account, you MUST for this project, as we are using it for every step in the writing process.  To create an account, you must have an email address of your own (especially important for students who have had older siblings here at Marian.)  I strongly urge my students to set their passwords as their last names and their birthday (for example:  smith110292 )     You will most likely be using turnitin during your senior year, and in college - as most universities are taking advantage of this system - so make the password something you'll remember.

Every student MUST register on www.turnitin.com.  Sophomores, use class id# 2842554, and enrollment password: english2;   Juniors, use class id# 2842556, and enrollment password: english3
